I'll go first then.

I think you've got the ones with countersunk screw holes. I've not used those but I would guess they just need the screws tightening really well to create a little indentation in the wood, or try a little tap with a hammer with a block of wood between. Try it first on an offcut of 18mm brich ply if you have one, or do the bottom back corner first. Alternately you could get some corners that  don't have that countersinking, Fender branded ones don't I think.

Its also possible that the radiusing on the edges is not matched to the radius of the metal corner, that would prevent them fitting correctly. I think the standard is approx ½" radius.

A photo of the corner would help.

Just spent 10 minutes researching the BBE Sonic Maximiser and it seems to do a similar job to the Aphex Aural Exciter pedal I have, mainly enhancing low and high frequencies. I tried the Aphex in the loop and it wouldn't have it, I guess its not a line level device. I know they do rack mount units eg the 204

http://www.aphex.com/204.htm

As with much of these type units there's not much info around on using them with a guitar rig. Be nice if you could footswitch them in and out of circuit. I'd be interested if anyone has tried these, the Aphex seem much more common here in the UK whilst the BBE appears much less so.

Check out the BBE Sonic Maximizer.

Thats interesting JohnE, I already had the G-sharp flagged as my next purchase effects wise. I will indeed check out a BBE. I'm assuming you are running without a any sort of dumbleator.

Thanks

First of all – is your OTS modified?
I have TR CRS 50 and CRS100 W also TR Kimok 50W and after 2 months of extensive tweaking my 50W OTS sounds bigger and sweeter than all of them.  It also can do Plexy and Hi gain as a third channel.

Thats great to know. I did some of the mods JZ posted plus I put a 680pF across the MV to brighten the tone at lower volumes. Still not where I want it to be and I wish I had the knowledge to try modding, but I need to be told 'change R(n) to XXXohms and C(n) to YYYpF etc' then i'll be able to get the iron warmed up.

Do you think this is a small component change caps, resistors, tubes or larger design based issue like the output transformer?

Not sure, in fact I'm not sure its even possible, they might be too disimilar. It might require a lot of minor changes and personally I wouldn't know where to start. I suppose a TR schematic would help  Grin

Cool, thanks for posting. It must be noted that the TR CRS and the OTS are intended to be quite different amps, although I'm sure you're not suggesting they're meant to be identical. What did Matt think of the OTS?

Cat

I think their starting points are pretty similar and the TR is definitely not a clone in the sense that the OTS is, what TR have done is take the design and refine it and improve it quite a lot. Matt wasn't that keen on the OTS, I think, but then he already has a TR!!. What I found was that the OTS was sufficiently similar for me to be heartened and to want to take it to a really knowledgeable tech who also knows the TR sound to see if he can mod mine to make it more like the TR.

I was very fortunate to hear Matt Schofield play both his TR (100w Custom Reverb Signature on half power, NOS5751 in V2) and an OTS both through my EMV-12L cab (admittedly a too small cab as the speaker was in a small combo where its not destined to stay) This was at (loudish) class room volumes but by no means cranked.

The differences were quite marked. Whilst he sounded just like himself through both, the TR was way bigger in its tone, even at lowish volumes, brighter and a more full bass with a superior clarity to my ear. The OTS was at a slight disadvantage in that it wasn't set up the same, the trimmer was at about 12o'clock I think (that didn't affect the cleans of course) and of course V2 was the standard AX7. The OTS sounded very nice indeed but a little way off the TR tone but then the difference in price is huge. To my ear the TR did sound a lot more Fenderish than the OTS which defintely had way more mids than the TR.

We also tried the OTS through two cabs in parallel, a DrZ with a Vintage 30 and my EVM and I like the tone very much indeed, the V30 giving a real nice chime to the tone. I am now very seriously thinking of pairing the EVm with one of those when it moves into its 2x12.

mmm.... food for thought!!

729  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Preamp tubes on: August 01, 2008, 09:20:43 PM
I heard preamp tubes make a big difference in this amp depending on what you use.

Does anyone have any suggestions on which ones would be good.

Thanks,
JD

A 5751 in V2 makes a huge difference, but if you are after the RF tone you'll probably not like it, however if you're finding you like the OD trimmer set very low 8-9 o'clock, try one, it'll open up the sound a lot and the gain will be still there when you crank the trimmer up again.

Very useful info bluestone, thanks very much.

Hywelg, is the 5751 a 12AT7 ?

No the 5751 has a slightly lower gain than an AX7 where the AT7 is quite a lot lower.

you could ask him if he's happy using the G-Sharp without the Kleinulator

I did a while back and he's very pleased with the results, especially the reverbs and delays.
733  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: My ODSish rant! on: July 24, 2008, 08:37:46 AM
The mere fact that Nik is making this amp available to the general public is bound to have some less knowledgeable folks asking questions. The problem then comes when those less knowledgeable (myself included) don't quite understand the terminology being used by those who have tweaked the circuitry.

I am quite capable of making mods to my OTS, and I want and need to make the clean channel brighter, but am befuddled with the all the mods that have been presented on this forum, especially as not every mods' effect on the amp is explained, its sort of assumed that we'll know which mods we need to make and which to leave alone. I've come to the conclusion that I'll probably take it to a tech and explain what I want and hope that he'll have the knowledge to go right to it.

Tone is very highly subjective and since very few people are able to hear an OTS in the flesh and before they make the leap of faith of buying one they want to know if the amp stands comparison to something they have heard in the flesh, a very valid starting point I would have thought. I know what I want in my OTS, a mixture of SuperReverb clarity, Marshall crunch, MEsa high gain, Ac30 brightness, Tweed............. only joking. Seriously most people know what they want to hear and the 'D' sound is such a rarity to find in the flesh I think its natural to be cautious.

734  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Questionable, but i might be going for the Overtone on: July 23, 2008, 08:51:06 PM
Before you do any mods try a 5751 in the V2 position with the trimmer at 8:30-9:00. YOu could also try and AT7 in V2 without doing any harm but that is a lot lower gain, you might have to turn the trimmer up a notch. I also think the TR are voiced differently, the clean is brighter and less warm than an OTS, but there does appear to be significant differences between different Ceriatone OTS's

Another thing I'm going to try is an AT7 in the PI position, not sure what the effect will be but will let you know when I do. (It will be a while, I need to try it at rehearsal, home volumes won't really tell you much)
735  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Questionable, but i might be going for the Overtone on: July 23, 2008, 08:22:51 AM
I want something that sounds good at bedroom volumes

Sorry to put a dampener on your enthusiasm but an amp that sounds good at bedroom levels is unlikely to sound good at gig or even rehearsal levels. Get yourself a 5watt or less  single ended amp for the quiet (tho 5 watts is anything but quiet) levels and the OTS for rehearsal/gigs. The OTS really needs to be pushed to get the great tone out of it as I found out the other evening at rehearsal (until they told me to TURN IT DOWN) I'm still considering fitting PowerScaling to mine so I can get good tone at rehearsal volumes, but its quite a lot for the top of the range LondonPower circuitry and to pay a good tech to fit it.

The RF thing so many are seeking is what you'll get from the OTS od channel quite easily right out of thre box but John Mayer, maybe not. I'm a fan of Matt Schofield who also uses a TR and he has a 5751 in the V2 position and it cleans up the od channel beautifully, much more like Mayer I think.
