Ceriatone / Overtone / Does the OTS have a 'break in' period
|
on: September 05, 2008, 08:03:08 AM
|
I have noticed that the amp is now, after 3 months or so, a lot brighter than it was and I now have the presence and treble controls near noon whereas previously they were much higher , especially the Presence. The clean tone is a lot more articulate and chirpy.
Since there are a new batch of OTS amps out there and many people are reporting they can't get the same tones they have been hearing in the online clips I'm wondering if the amps do need a period of break in. If that is the case what components need that break in period? Valves? caps? seems unlikely to me, but its definitely the case here that the amp has improved.

Ceriatone / Overtone / A simple idea to improve the K'Ator

I'd need a rackmount version if I was to get one. What I would also like is a hard wired bypass that was footswitchable so you could return you OTS (or whatever) to unadulterated pure tone (obviously taking all effects connected via the K out of play as well).

It has occurred to me that I am very unlikely to ever use the Jazz setting, so I'd like to dispense with the switch and maybe use it to switch in a mid cut to make it more like a Super Reverb. I know this might be sacrilege to D* adherents, but what the heck!! Problem is I don't really know where to start. I've downloaded the Duncan Amps Tone stack calculator http://www.duncanamps.com/tsc/ and created a profile for the AB763 and OTS circuits as best I can and I can see that the OTS is almost flat whilst the AB763 has a big dip at about 700-800Hz. If anyone has used this tool as a basis to do mods I appreciate them chiming in with suggestions for component values.

I've tried a few amps that switch from 4 to 2 valves and in every case the the 4 valve setting has sounded, fuller, bigger in a difficult to define way, even at the same volume.
I feel a second OTS coming on!

Just a thought, though I apologise if it seems trite. Have you checked your cable? I had a cable go bad on me and all it did was drop treble a whole lot. Try a really good one like a GeorgeL's or Klotz or VanDamme etc and not too long, 10' or so.

I'm more interested in the cleans than the OD aswell and my setup (with a 5751 in V2) gives the OD channel a nicely breaking up clean. Add a pedal on top (Red Snapper or Stampede SOV-1) and I can get some dirt, but much different to the original ax7 OD sound.
Still struggling to get it right with humbuckers tho'. I wonder how high I can go with the snubber caps on V2 to try and lose some of the treble? Single coils (Fralins) sound really sweet.

I recently bought an OTS and I've noticed that there's two piggy backed 40 microfarad caps at 500 volt close to the mains transformer is this okay??
Sounds like this is one of the first series that had the Jack Zucker mods applied to it.. Search this thread and you'll probably see some photos similar to yours. Edit.... Been and had a look, no photos in this thread. Seen some somewhere, just can't remember where. Anyone?

Yep, completely agree. I think we understand that you're not doing it to plug your band, more to give us UK-ers the chance to see and hear and OTS before we order one....potentially....
I just want to hear an OTS in the hands of someone who can play!!

I have the the BBE 482i output going into to G Sharp input, the G Sharp connected to the OTS loop send and the OTS loop return going to the BBE input. This routing produces full volume and tone. I think you might have written that incorrectly! Surely its OTS Send -->BBE Input-->BBE Output-->G# Input--> G#Output-->OTS Return. If its any other way I really don't understand how the FX loop works!!

Hywelg, thanks for the explanation. Would the G-sharp still function with instrument cables into the OTS? I'd think so I haven't got my g-sharp yet to try it still waiting for the dealer to get the g-switch to go with it. On a slightly different OTS loop topic, today I plugged a 15' patch cable into the loop and the amp became noticeably fuller, less attenuated and possibly even more "open". Then I ran my RedPlate D'lator by itself into the loop and the OTS became even more alive. This was especially noticeable on the lead tones. (I'm really digging the OD tone with the PAB off) I'm starting to get a big grin on my face when I hear this OTS with the loop in use. I wish I could get my hands on a few of these 'ators to try. Some have mentioned the K rolls off the highs somewhat, which I'm not keen to do, but I do know that the OTS doesn't sound as 'BIG' as a TR CRS (which has its 'ator built in apparently).

Standing with the chassis open upwards, with the knobs facing you the OD trimmer is second from the left (ie the middle, well it''l be in the middle which ever way you look at it!!). Now you have to adjust it with the screwdriver entering from the right, but read the clock face FROM the left.
If you use a long electricians insulated screwdriver and are very careful you can do this while its on and someone is playing a guitar through it. Turning the trimmer all the way to either end will tell you which is the 'low' end ie 7 o'clock. Once you understand which is the low end you can adjust it looking from either side. But be careful.

TRS are commonly used in PA connections as mono with the two cores as the signal + and signal - with the sleeve being grounded and not used for any of the signal path unlike in a stereo connection where its a common signal -. Generally called balanced mono as opposed to an intrument cable which would be called an unbalanced mono.

It sounds like the g-sharp is compensating for the loss of volume inherent in the BBE (due to impedance mismatches).
Do you find any inconsistency with the master volume with this setup, others have noted its ineffective past a certain point?
