I've a 4x10 with Jensen P10R's and I like them. Warm tone good bass response but not as bright as say a 2x12 combination with one Vintage 30 in the mix. The vintage 30 is a good foil for the warmer less toppy EVM or G12-65.

ooo great!  if you can record it, can you record it with and without the effects in the loop?  i want to see how big of a difference it makes
It does make a very big difference but I think you'd need studio recording facilities to be able to hear it, which I dont' have, in fact I don't have any decent recording facilities unfortunately. I can confirm all that others have said about the sonic maximiser, it gives you a much bigger sound altogether, but whether it is a big as a TR CRS without a BBE I couldn't say, but getting close I would hope.

The thing is this BBE Max-X2 was £50 second hand from a shop with a warranty so its not going to break the bank. They have more of them if anyone in the UK is interested.

If Nik could make a TR CRS he would be swamped by orders and lawyers letters!

Very impressive, just what I am aiming to achieve myself. Did you mount the Klein parts in the rack enclosure? Where did you get the rack enclosure from? I'm still trying to find one. How are you powering it?

Are you referring to the G Major, like this unit?

How do you like it as apposed to stomp boxes?

Probably the BEST (compact and comparably cheap) solution for the OTS. It can switch channels, has great EQ, noise gate and other effects. It can be controlled via  Gminor footswitch  which also works as a tuner and so on.
Also with G major you DO NOT NEED klein/dumbleator! You can adjust everything with IN and OUT controls on G major.

Interesting options on that unit. To be honest I wasn't sure that I would like the digital delays and reverbs at all so I went with the cheapest TC option and it has worked out well. One thing that put me off the G-Major was the lack of any knobs with the G# I can se exactly what is set where, however there is a big downside that I wasn't aware of, loading presets tells you nothing about what settings were used so you're going to need to make a handwritten note.
665  Ceriatone / Overtone / Whats in your effects loop on: September 18, 2008, 02:30:42 PM
There has been quite a bit of discussion in the Overtone Pics thread about the effects loop. I thought I'd start a new thread since we seemed to have gone off topic (can't use the OT abbreviation here can I!) a little.

Anyway I received my BBE Max-X2 this morning and I've had my G# about 10 days or so. I've heard a lot about the BBe Sonic Maximizers and wanted to try one and this Max-X2, whilst being a crossover has a sonic maximiser built in, but I wasn't ever so sure it was going to work. However I have made a splitter cable so that I can recombine the two crossover ranges, and I fed that into the G#. Each of the crossover ranges have individual gain controls so I have very rough control of the top and bottom frequencies going into the G#. I have had both gain controls at approx 3 0'clock and this is giving me the right level for the G# (it has input LED's,Green, Yellow and Red), and this is about the same level as with nothing in the loop.

Anyway, the results are very good indeed. A/B ing the Sonic Maximiser In/Out is very revealing, much more pronounced bottom and top end, and great clarity, though this only really manifests itself when playing chords, its not so apparent when playing solo notes, and it is most noticeable when playing clean, the more drive you have going on, the les pronounced the effect I think, I guess because the act of overdriving the tubes is bound to introduce more harmonic content anyway.

When physically taking it all out of the loop there is defintely something put back thats not there with both units bypassed but this really is minimal,  but I think I will be needing a hardbypass switch and possibly a Klein.

Do you use a Kleinulator?
I have a G_sharp as well. Combined with the Kleinlulator I get no loss of volume Tone seems the same too. The Kleinulator does change to tone of the amp ofcourse (for the better).

No K yet, might well be going that route, need to find a rack mount box to house it and a means of hardbypassing it. You wouldn't get any loss of volume with the K in the loop, but I do with just the G#.

It does worry me that the K changes the tone. I want more sparkle and chime not less.

About your crossover idea-the only caution I might have is it sounds like you're planning to sum the two outputs of the xover together? Depending on the design of the xover used, you may need to isolate them from one another with a mixer stage, it's unlikely that it will be happy with a "Y' cord type of connection. You may be better off with an EQ of some kind if what you really want is powerful tone control...just a thought.

It is going to be suck it and see. I'm not wedded to it especially since i did need a crossover for my PA anyway. Summing the two outputs should work since both high and low outs have their own gain so its not as if I'll be overloading the input to the G#. If that doesn't work I'll simply turn the crossover frequency down to 80Hz and use the high out only and see what that sounds like (bottom E on guitar is 80Hz I think). It has arrived but I haven't had chance to make a splitter cable yet, probably this evening.

Me too.

Just received my BBe Max-X2 which is a crossover (which I intend bridging) with Sonic maximiser built in. Also have a G# to go in the loop. Will report back on how it fares.
669  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Pics of completed Overtones on: September 17, 2008, 08:16:48 PM
No the G-Sharp is the cheaper unit. So far so good, as others have reported the delays and reverbs are good with many many options you don't get on a pedal. The chorus effects are good enough for me, and I will be losing my Boss from the pedalboard soon, but to be fair I never used it much.

Vibratos and tremolos I'm not keen on so won't comment, however the Flanger and Phaser sounds I think are poor. I've got an EVH MXR unit on my pedal board and it is much better than the G# so thats staying.

As I needed a delay pedal, and wanted a reverb unit with this amp, the G# was an easy choice to make coming in at less than half the cost of two good pedals. One downside is that even with the volume maxed on the G#, there is a loss of volume with it in the loop, and though its difficult to hear, there is a loss of tone, but only very marginal. The bypass is not a hardwired bypass so the signal stays degraded even when no effects are on. I must add though that this is very marginal, and indeed might in part be due to the signal level drop not driving the PI or powertubes quite as hard.

My plans are to, at the very least, make some sort of hard bypass switch to take the unit out of the loop and then I will need something to boost the signal when it is in circuit. I'm hoping the BBE Max-X2 will do this, but I'm not that confident. I will probably end up with a Kleinulator, though I intend modding this to have a hardbypass function, either on the box or via a footswitch. I'm not prepared to trade off tone for effects in the loop so the bypass will allow the OTS to sing its heart out when I need it to.
670  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Does the OTS have a 'break in' period on: September 17, 2008, 06:33:12 PM
I'd say those settings are pretty loud ( I have my ratio set to give equal volume from both clean and OD channels). I live in a detached house, but with lots of others close by and I don't reckon my wife would let me keep it at that volume for long. Me, I couldn't give a stuff!! I guess its because I reckon I sound good, whereas others probably don't agree!
671  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Pics of completed Overtones on: September 17, 2008, 06:28:38 PM
Here's some more photos of the completed amp. This is working really well for me, I can sit this box directly on top of my cabinet (two alnico Tone Tubbies in a custom-built cabinet one open back, one closed). plug in and go. I have the OTS footswitch mounted on my pedal board. Simple, and sounds great!
btw- this forum has been a huge help to me as I was building this amp, thanks to everyone for all the great information.

Interesting setup Cinstan. I guess that small box is something akin to a Kleinulator? I'm in the process of putting together something very similar, a G# and a BBE Max-X2.

Now this Max-X2 is essentially a cross-over with a built in Sonic Maximiser. I haven't got it yet and I'm not sure it will work (but if it doesn't, I need a crossover for my PA anyway), but I intend bridging the High and Low outputs from one channel of the crossover to go into the G#. This way I have a Gain control in front of the G#, plus in addition to the Sonic Maximiser I can apply varying gain to high and low frequencies. I'm hoping this will do away with the need for a  Kleinulator, however I have been in touch with Nik about a kit so that I can mount that in rack box designed to match my amp. Will report back on progress.
672  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Does the OTS have a 'break in' period on: September 16, 2008, 09:03:53 PM
I have seen my local guitar shop leave the amps on for 2 days or more and not just on standby either ie ON, but nothing plugged in.

Mine just seems to get better and better. I don't really get chance to wind it up at home. I took it to rehearsal last night and it was better than ever, its getting to sound 'big'. I had it on Input vol 4 (for H/B's) and 6 (for SC's) and master on 5 with my Jensen P10R 4x10 cab. I think I'm going to have to book the room just for myself for an hour before the other guys arrive just to experiment with loud tone!
673  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Overtone Special or HRM on: September 14, 2008, 09:52:36 AM
Marin has both , but give him a chance he's only had the HRm for a day. He'll post more clips I'm sure, as will others as soon as they get theirs.

674  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: rack mount for Kleinulator on: September 13, 2008, 07:28:32 PM
I asked Nik about this a couple of days ago. He's got no plans to make a rack mount unit but he will sell you a kit of parts to mount it in your own rack box. This is what I intend to do with, if I can figure it out, a footswitcheable hard bypass.  I'm going to rip a boss type 9v DC wall wart apart and install that in the rack box so that it is mains powered and I intend fitting a 9v DC socket on the rear panel to chain other pedals of it if I need to.

I just need to find a rack box that is quite shallow so it can go in the rear of my rack unit.

See my other post in HRM questions. Nik let the cat out of the bag, the photos on the website are of MArins HRM!
