Ive swapped tubes since then so no change there

My tech facilitated the first power up with no problems. The hum was there but he ignored it that time.

My lead dressing was well thought off.

So far no "oops" found inside as I check things out especially the power board, output etc.
63  Ceriatone / Overtone / Puzzling hum when not touching the strings on: September 25, 2012, 06:15:04 PM
Hi!

I've been exchanging emails with Nik and calls with an amp tech. No luck so far

I'm getting buzz and hum when I'm not touching my Strat(non defective electronics) loud and just the same on clean. I know this phenomenon is normal if its relatively quiet on clean especially. I've taken advice from Nik and my tech to test different places/ venues/ power sources with grounding. No luck.

- I get a very very low volume low midrange hum as I turn the "ON" switch It comes from the speaker "Whoop-mmmmm" as you flip the switch. Its like lighting a stove whoop and then there's an elecrical sounding hum. It's not coming from the PT itself but from the speaker
- The hum (low midrange "zzz") creeps in as I lower my guitar volume knob from about 9-2 and then completely vanishes to quietness as you turn it down to 0 of course.
- The amp is quiet when the cable is unplugged.
- Is quiet with an mp3 player
- Buzz gets louder when I lean on the wall or stand on the floor w/o footwear.
- WHen the guitar vol is shut off, and you turn up the volume and master on the amp, the buzz hum is very audible (is it normal since the knobs are maxed out?)
- On most of my gigs and rehearsals on it so far it was quiet. Maybe because I am actually standing on those times...
- Its really not a big deal I actually thought it was normal. Is it?

Thanks in advance you guys!

Hi! My OTS has been playing for a while and my G12-65 is factory broken in. I've been using a lot of settings and have found many good ones. One thing that sorta bothers me is stiffness with picking especially on clean.

Is this because im using JJ 6L6's?

Is this a symptom of high plate voltage? If so, can it be easily lowered then or something?

Does it take like 10 arena gigs for the rest of the components to break in?

Thanks guys! I thought this could spark some discussion to cure any stiff issues.

Put in a mullard in V1.  THe tone gets big and girth clean when I turn up the volume up to about 9 where the cabinet cant handle the bass anymore haha. Is this the case with all other tubes in v1?

I trimmed all the wires going from the boards beforehand. I then wires the two boards together then wired the incoming leads to the power board. I wired the board then wired the incoming wires to the main board.. Lastly I wired the main board.

Used the drill method for the heaters and put them hanging on top of the tube sockets.

mcinku - Yes it now only gets warm hot when its playing for a while in moderate volume.

 Smiley

Kevster - I see. Im not sure what you meant with jumping more on clean?

I love the sound. When you tap the strings BOOM man! Now I know my guitar's faults so weeelll.
The amp tends to get noisy sometimes. Especially on overdrive. I realize my single coils hum like bees but I wanna make sure I dont have a microphonic tube.

There's a slight crackling noise kinda like rain on tarpaulin but very subtle. It goes up when I turn up the master vol not the pream vol. I know my v2 and v3 tubes can be faulty. They once took a ride with me in my backpack with other stuff in it. Funny how some things aren't really invited when you go on a gig out of town.

Also does the PT really get stingy warm? Its more like hot than warm. The OT and choke on the other hand, stays cool.

Could this be a result of over biasing?

My fuses were fine  Grin

It's all good now. I called our popular local amp tech to facilitate the first power up. He checked everything and apparently the PT needed something like an initiation? What's that? Something to that effect. So then it worked. We then noticed the foot pedal doesn't work. He found out that the DIN socket middle lug wasn't grounded so he put a jumper and the foot pedal worked. He then set the bias 'by ear' Later when he left, I measured the bias and it was at 70 mark. I adjusted it to 35-39 and it sounded much better and defined.

It sounds great through my G12-65 in a home made cab.

Now my only concern left is that I don't seem to notice any difference in sound when engaging PAB. What should it do and what could I have missed if in fact, it doesn't work?

Thanks  Smiley I should update my build thread. I got some pretty gut shots.
71  Ceriatone / Overtone / Finished My OTS - Nothing so far on start up (Prob Solved No prob after all) on: August 23, 2012, 02:05:52 AM
Hi  Smiley

So I finished my OTS 50

I checked everything yet again and decided to put in the tubes, set the controls properly for startup, plugged a speaker load and turned the switch ON. I dont get any response. No light from the indicator, no glow on the tubes. I didn't flip the Standy switch yet to be safe. I checked that my fuses are fine, checked connections again, so I tried and I got nothing again.

I really dont know what to check anymore cause everything checks ok.

My DMM show continuity (beep) between the two 3.15v heaters. Also to their center tap ground. Also theres continuity between the two gray wires (6v-0) to the relay power, theres also continuity from the IEC left and right lugs! ( i measured from the switch and the IEC socket).  Is this normal? I would think its because they're all AC? Is AC supposed to be an open circuit? Or does my DMM show inaccurate indication perhaps? Or is my PT like defective perhaps?

Just  Cry

Hahah no, I also like Overtone for what I think it is.

...I guess its too early to say but I'm probably gonna itch to get another amp anyway.
73  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Bluesmaster vs. normal Overtone Special on: August 18, 2012, 12:27:47 AM
I see. Sort of like huge sounding then as opposed to dark. It sucks cause I have the OTS.
74  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Bluesmaster vs. normal Overtone Special on: August 16, 2012, 11:36:55 PM
So here's a new question; Can you make a normal OTS dark? Even as dark as a BM on normal settings?  Cry

Sounds perfect for my needs also. I couldn't believe they didn't really think this was possible. I mean its just what you wanted it to be after all! I am definitely getting a Neo 12 when I find one. Thanks for the very very basic review sir Gregg.
