Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Diagnosis - strange noise

I spent over an hour last saturday prior to a Sunday gig chasing a funny rattly/buzzy noise that I was getting from my strat. Changed all three pre-amp tubes one at a time, took the back off the cab, tried another speaker cab. Swapped guitars and it stopped. OK I thought that narrows it down s/c's vs H/B's. Anyway to cut a long story short. I have two Push/Push switches on my strat and when either of them is UP i get this very subtle buzz on held notes. Sounds like something in the cab rattling, but its definitely to do with those switches. Haven't had chance to rip it apart to find out why yet, I do hope its not because they are worn, they've only been in 2 years.
Anyway the moral of this tale, just cos your amp is buzzing, don't mean its the amp!

That first, clean clip Pickmaster posted is reeeeallly SRV style clean. Sounds a lot like Lenny.
SRV played Lenny on a standard strat with a lower action and thinner strings and you can hear the difference. The tone is lighter.

Make sure you have a heavier set of strings on, 11-52 minimum, SRVs were heavier than that. Then tune to E flat (D#).
13-60odd I think. Plus a very high action, this does affect the tone. You'll need a guitar specifically set up to get that tone unless you're looking for 'Lenny' type tones. Pao Ferro fretboard might have an influence. My experience of Texas Specials was they were nice but not as good as Fralin VH's. I also hear Lollar Blackface pups are very good.

Still didn't get a lot of time on it today, we had a gig this evening to prepare for. Some progress though.

Just got home from our first gig for absolutely ages to find I've managed to get a Nova Reverb off ebay.
Thanks John for the heads up on these units. Will keep my eye open for a nova delay now.

I think you'll like the V1 and V2 switching mods. Make it sound bigger to my ear.
Not sure about dispensing with the FET yet. I need an acoustic (don't own one) to try through the normal input just to see if I can manage without the FET. I do find that by cranking Treble to 6, Mid to 7 and Bass to 8 then the PAB, whilst it alters the tone, the level change is more useable.
I had done some of the other mods as part of the JZ mods earlier. ie the additional 50uF caps.

I'm on my second build, a DC-30 and I have to say it is marginally more complicated than an OTS so I'd say go with an OTS first if thats what you really want. The thing about the DC-30 build is the photos Nik has put up are not as clear as those for the OTS so if you need to refer to them for checking lead dress etc. the OTS is easier. Also the layout for the DC-30 is missing some important info like where to ground signal wire shielding for example and you do have to know a little about how it should be done since the photos are not especially helpful. The OTS drawing is much more complete in this respect.

Sorry for slight delay, I've been "Dr Ika'ing" my Ceriatone. Wow !!! John How far have you gone? I really like the snubber cap mods. Haven't done the PAB volume mod or the OD gain mod ( inplace of the Rock/Jazz switch) yet.

I can't answer most of your questions since I bought the whole kit from Nik, but I'd be interested in the answers nevertheless.
Forget the low power mod, you'll be running the 6L6's in triode mode and the tone will suffer.
I'd also say this isn't really a 'rockin' amp my my understanding of the word. I think for that you'd need something more Marshally. What the OTS is though is hugely versatile, because its is designed to be clean almost to max volume. So it takes pedals very well, and thats what I've done to get a more 'rockin' sound. An Xotic BB and a Menatone TBIAC juice it up nicely. The OD channel is really intended for lead and isn't that good I find for powerchord type stuff, especially if you've got the trimmer set to give a lot of overdrive.
My two penn'orth, but I reckon others will have more info for you.

Thanks that puts my mind at rest, though I didn't think it would be possible to interpret it any other way.
