I guess I am the one that found the needle in the haystack. I would not change anything from the amp to my speaker cab. This is exactly what my ears wanted. It is quite simply the best sounding amp I have ever heard, as advertised and more. While I have no idea about the history of this amp I am certainly glad it is here now. Eureka!

Nathan, We all definately have target sounds we are looking for but I love the OD channel. One of (among many) the tones I really like is quite similar to "Reeling in the Years" Steely Dan type. I hit with my LP and it is very nice to my ears anyhow. I haven't found the tones to be harsh at all. I am using a Kleinulator and Reverb the former of which I am told fattens the sound a bit. The OD sounds are better with buckers, however, to me at least. I use some light drive and no boost with my Strat, just enough to know it is there...no more. I have found some VERY nice warm ever so slightly driven tones with my Strat, again this is all very subjective, but I can't help but think that tone is in there somewhere. I really like what my ears are hearing. I am using a combo cab that has a v30 and G12h30 Celestions combo. I won't say it nails that fat Mayer tone but it is certainly very nice and in the ballpark. Have you tried rolling back the mids to near nothing. Using moderate Treble (5ish) and a little more Bass? My Strat sounds incredible...no kidding. I get some very nich tones doing the Hendrix, SRV Mayer type thing.

I want something that sounds good at bedroom volumes Sorry to put a dampener on your enthusiasm but an amp that sounds good at bedroom levels is unlikely to sound good at gig or even rehearsal levels. Get yourself a 5watt or less single ended amp for the quiet (tho 5 watts is anything but quiet) levels and the OTS for rehearsal/gigs. The OTS really needs to be pushed to get the great tone out of it as I found out the other evening at rehearsal (until they told me to TURN IT DOWN) I'm still considering fitting PowerScaling to mine so I can get good tone at rehearsal volumes, but its quite a lot for the top of the range LondonPower circuitry and to pay a good tech to fit it. The RF thing so many are seeking is what you'll get from the OTS od channel quite easily right out of thre box but John Mayer, maybe not. I'm a fan of Matt Schofield who also uses a TR and he has a 5751 in the V2 position and it cleans up the od channel beautifully, much more like Mayer I think. I respectfully disagree. As one who has spent more time playing in, than playing out, I have discovered many ways to get good tones at acceptable home levels. Now I am NOT saying whisper levels, but I am saying acceptable and fully functional in a multi member home. On the Overtone: With Overdrive: The ratio control gives you a considerable amount of control. The OD begins to sing with the volume around 4 to 5. I keep the master near 5 as someone has said the levels of the Kleinulator and effects are appropriate as a result of that setting. The ratio turned down to where the sounds just opens up is a very acceptable home level, with a closed door and the neighbors will never know you are playing. I live in a house, not an apartment, however. Clean: On clean tones, I prefer a smooth tone, not barking and abrupt. Low mids helps that as does a low guitar volume. the amp is still set on 4 ish on the volume and 5 on the master but very low around 1.5 to 2 on the guitar volume. The signal from the guitar is low, smooth and sweet but the amp is singing its voice so the tone is very rich but smoooooth. I have played my 335 like that for years on clean with other amps. The tone is remarkable. These work for me and I get very nice sounds at acceptable levels. What you cannot do is get some natural drive from loud volumes on the clean channel...or I haven't figured out how(without an attenuator)...but properly using the overdrive and ratio substitutes quite nicely for that. The Overtone can accomplish very nice tones at home levels. Necessity is the mother of invention. Regards, Casken

Nik mentioned that possibility as well. I don't think that is the case here. My shipping identified this as 2.1mm and the connector on the end of a Roland 9v fits perfectly and snug. Whether or not it is a 2.5 or 2.1 I cannot say.
However, with the connector snuggly fitting it still manages to lose contact and needs a push inward from time to time. I think someting is lose or the contact itself is defective in some way.
Where would I order a replacement part for it. Frankly, I have no idea where to shop or what to call it...techno dummy here.
I can't see the need to get a very small inexpensive part all the way from Malaysia so I'd like to order here in the states. I don't imagine it is too complicated to change it out...is it?

I finally found out what was wrong. It had me quite perplexed because nothing seemed consistent, except that things woould take turns not working. The Kleinulator has a quirky connection where the 9v supply goes in. I've tried several different ones (Roland, Boss, One Spot etc.) and found one that really fits the housing of the input like a glove. IT still goes on and off without pressure against it to hold it in...if it is bumped. Pretty minor issue really. Otherwise the amp works fine and sounds simply AMAZING! I am truly impressed.

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: How Fender can the OTS get?
|

I also wondered about the initial query in this thread. About how Fender can the amp get?
I have owned several Fender tube amps and currently have both a DRRI and Concert in my home.
The Overtone is pretty close to Fendery with what I am doing now. Mild amount of overdrive, bright on rock on. Treble 5, Mid maybe 1, Bass 5-6.5 to taste. Gain 5 from trem set at about 9 to 9:30. Mid boost off. Klein plus Hollygrail reverb. The Hall setting actually sounds more like Spring Reverb on my Fenders than does its Spring Reverb setting.
The difference in tone is the compression sound of the Overtone, my Fender concert sounds much the same as what I have described if I use a compressor and FD2 with it. But the Overtone does get close and has some very nice sounds. I haven't played Little Wing in quite some time the search for that tone brought it out of me.
Very useful and responsive to picking techniques. Does well with the SRV, Hendrix type playing.
My cab...8ohm Avatar 2X12 combo Celestion Vintage 30 and G12H30.
Pretty doggone close. My son works sound for a very large church with multiple services over several days so he knows his sound. He agreed it is very Fendery in quality. But it goes farther in other ways, much farther. While I have found the higher gains sound much better on my LP the light gain stuff and chord work is superb on my strat. (It has Kinman AVN blues pups n the neck and middle.)

I am in only my second day with this amp. It is remarkable in the way it conveys the specific voice of any guitar you are playing. In ways it is quite transparent.
There is an acoustic type content in the tone that actually betrays a bit of the acoustic unplugged quality of the guitar you are playing. I've never heard that content before. It really does catch seemingly everything the guitar is sending it.

PAB=Pre Amp By pass or "clean" am I correct?
1) Without the footswitch and the OD switch turned to manual (the boost still down or on pedal) I get a clean channel. I am runnig a HolyGrail Reverb through the Kleinulator and it sounds very Fendery (mids are almost to zero) with very good depth btw. Very Nice.
2)The first time w/out the footswitch I turned both the OD and PreAmpBoost in the up or manual position it popped and fizzed and crackled. Very unsettling! I tried it again and seemed to simply engage the boost over the clean channel as one might expect.
3)I get no sound at all with footswitch in and both toggles set to manual
4)With footswitch in OD switch to pedal position I get now clean channel and sound only when the red light turns on the OD channel.
3 & 4 Nik advised me to try. I am sure he'll be back with me in a bit. I am trying to learn and eliminate the operator error in this mix.

Got mine today, initial impressions are overall very positive.
My LP loves this amp. I am very pleased with my strat as well on it. I am still trying to get the vibe going on my 335...I just haven't found its sweet spot...yet!
Well worth the wait, even thought I play clean and low gain 90% of the time the gain is sooooo good on this amp I may go for more dirt!

Okay guys, I'll accept my dunce cap. I am a techno idiot. But something is not quite right here I think. Perhaps the operator... On the footswitch when only the green light is on...notta, nothing, no sound. Only when the red is on (or both) do I hear anything. Is the green a boost only? Or... What am I doing wrong, I realize I have too many buttons and gizmos to play with. Is that normal? I had assumed the green only would be a clean channel but I hear nothing when the red is out.It took me a while to get the Overdrive to clicking but man...whatta sound! I am really having a bit of trouble navigating all these gizmos and options. I can say, however, this is the best all around sounding amp I have ever owned or played. That includes Fender 65 Twin, Concert, Princeton Reverb, A few Boogies, A peavey Classic 50 and a few off brands. This is one sweet amp, The cleans are right up there with the best Fenders I have heard ...and the gain is second to none. Thanks to JohnE for the speaker cab recommendation. My gosh, My Strat sounds fantastic!

Yup, I got my notification today as well. The Kleinulator shipped with the Boss 2.1mm so I won't have to modify it. I am hoping for delivery prior to the weekend but that may not happen. At any ratr it is on its way and I am pumped!

I ordered on the 15th of April. If I understood Nik correctly my amp is built as of the end of last week. Its shipment is waiting on the next round of Kleinulators to be finished to ship one with it. It is supposed to ship this week sometime. Hopefully sooner than later. The waiting gets harder the closer it gets to delivery...doesn't it?

I'd appreciate first impressions and a photo of the mod as well. I caught mine before it was out the door and Nik was great to deal with as always and I got the OD mod for mine as well. It'll sure make tweaking easier for those of us who are challenged electrically.
Nik said mine would be ready to ship tomorrow, but it might be Monday due to them having to wait on the next round of the Kleinulators.

Nice tones indeed pickmaster. They possess the depth of tone of a good Fender amp but with something a little more. Very nice and rich.
Btw, is that your L6-S in your avatar? I had one back in the mid to late 70s. It played like a dream.
Thanks again.
