Just to clarify for future reference and to reiterate, for the most part Gregg's "method 1".

The "Drive" control adjusts the level of the signal coming from the preamp of the amp going to the effects input or whatever's in the Clator's loop. "IN" sets the level of the signal coming back from the effects and "OUT" is a tube gain stage that is used to make up any lost volume from turning down the volume at DRIVE or IN. It "recovers" volume, and is the global, "master" volume control for the signal coming out of the C-lator.

Thanks for wording it properly, Chris. It's been a long 3 days and i really haven't slept much  :Smiley
You're quite welcome, although I mostly just copied and pasted how the manual puts it. Wink I mainly wanted to make sure that people know the "Drive" does not control the overall master volume. I feel it's easy to confuse the "Drive" knob due to the way it's worded. I built my Clator from scratch and like a big dummy never got a around to putting lables on the front, so for the longest time I needed to re-confirm just what each knob did.

Ahh, thanks for the link. The close-up is much more discernable. Pretty cool.

Ok guys, just posting up date on this

Received the cab and amp yesterday and I must say, the customer service and communication I've had from Nik, Lin and Sang has been amazing throughout this ordeal.

Amp looks great and all mods were done as per my specs. The amp itself isn't too difficult to dial in the cleans, but the OD is tricky at the moment. Hard to juggle volume and OD levels at present.

Right now, the OD sounds quite underwhelming, but I'm burning it in for the next day or so and hopefully the OD will be a little more crisp and dumble like. The cleans are quite darker than expected, because reading reviews and watching clips gave me the impression it would be on the brighter side, but this is easily remedied with the bright switches on either the amp or clator.

Ive only managed to play the amp through my strat ultra and yet to tried it with the gibson lp 59 yet, but I think it needs time for the amp to burn in, and also time breaking in the speakers.....

Just my initial impressions on the amp thus far.... I can tell you there is going to be a lot of time spent of tweaking her

Yes, it's best to save any conclusive opinions for a little while. These amps really do change as the break-in. I don't know if you mentioned it before, but what speakers are you using? I see you said WGS, just didn't read the exact model.

Oh, and try that Les Paul sooner than later. Don't get me wrong I love single coils through my amp, but humbuckers will make it sing a bit faster.

Changed out the cap and it all sounds good. Thanks for the help.
That's good news. Happy Jam'n!

How about this one...
That's veru cool looking. The grill cloth is really nice. I haven't seen anything just like it. What material(s) is it made with?

A special request from Nik to make a 'Slow dancing in a burning room' clips.

Fender Strat > Boss Chromatic Tuner > Boss Ru-3 Loop station > SSS

There are two clips in this video.

No 1. was shot with iPhone 4s camera.

No 2. Then tried to redo again with microphone.

I only had the one mic at the time but it really doesn't capture the tone of this amp. There is a certain magic to these beauties that despite my best efforts - i couldn't get recorded.

If i had to describe it, i would say its like a two rock sterling sig, but a bit more raw.

One thing to note on JM's tone is that his tone is a combination of an SSS and his Sig amp, which is almost the same except with a darker voicing. it is the combination of the two that make his sound... that and almost 2 decades of practice!!!!

anyway, i only did one take on these (didnt have time to warm up or anything) but it should help you get an idea of the sound at least... just try ignore the playing haha

Ah, that second take is starting to show the real deal. Good clip and playing mm2011! Keep em, coming.

Oh, throw the iPhone in garbage when you do so. Use a mic.  Wink

Update
Swapped out the tube for a Raytheon BP (Probably a waste of a good vintage tube) but it sounds much better. Might just replace the cap anyway.

You know due to the way you posed the question and me not giving it a proper consideration, I was approaching this from a standpoint of the heater voltage on the cap, but possibly the bigger issue was the fact that the cathode voltage was on the heater filament. I forget what sort of voltage is on pin 8, but I know it doesn't take much to ruin the tube filament. Replacing the tube is probably a good idea.

Here's a write-up about testing caps. It's probably easier to just replace the thing, but you may me interested in knowing for sure. Glad you're making headway.

This is nice news.  Smiley

Tell this guy to make some Hi-Fi clips and post them.

I got to check it out tonight and there is quite a bit of noise when using it. Coming out of the recovery stage. Noise varies with pot position and the bright switch actually reduces the noise. So I'll probably change out the cap.

Yeah, sounds like a good idea.

Still sort of suprising, but not impossible. Hope this fixes it. If you get a chance report with progress....

P.S. It might be worth swapping another tube in there if you have one, just to rule out tube damage.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Have you noticed any strange measurements or increased noise? Was it on there long?

In the end it was only getting half wave voltage.

Beautiful, absolutely beautiful!!  Smiley   In every way.

Thank you for your replies. I do have a schematic, somewhere. I will find it check the voltages and report back. What a great way to learn! Thanks again!

Here you go. I had found this the other day. I forgot to get back to it.

Nothing you would probably remember, just a bunch of bands of drunken college kids that played at Murphs and the Depot.
I did know the guys in Alaska, who were a great band.  Jeff G taught guitar at Campbell's and I still hear from Eric S (keys).  I learned alot sitting in with the various tues/wed/thurs night things Eric put together and Jeff was a monster player who you could learn a lot from just watching.

I came out with a degree in psych, but really just played guitar all the time. I heard YCP entrance standards have been raised as well as academic rigor, which is probably for the best.  I got there in 1989, and it was a Rolling Stone top party school in 1988.  There were things that happened that I would not believe if I hadn't seen them myself.  I did have a great time and came out relatively unscathed.

Ah, I went to high school with Eric and Jeff. Jeff was always quite the prodigy, even back in HS.

I think those late eighties YCP times were when the school was getting a good bit of news coverage for certain crazed happenings. (kids falling off balconies, etc.) I might be wrong about the exact time period. Hey, what's a college experience without crazed debauchery. Shocked  http://youtu.be/pX71mALOPKs

I was trying to find a spec sheet for the transformer in question, but couldn't. As a drop in replacement, I have feeling it won't be as easy as that.

Do you know what the secondary voltages and current ratings are?

I would need to know this information to make any kind of proper conclusion.
