Haven't had much of a chance to test it to be honest. Rehearsal was a bit hectic. Used channel 1 most of the time, and I had complaints I was too loud so I turned down and then could really only hear the drummer!!!!

Tried a JJ Ef806 and it is better, but Mark at Hotrox had to test a few to find one that was better than the EH that Nik supplied. He reckons by far the best is a NOS Mullard if you can find one reasonably priced.

For now unless you absolutely have to have FX in your loop, forget the Klein, just use the amps clean channel and find what you like. Then work on the OD channel , they are interdependant. The trimmer is the key. If you have a good amp tech have him move it to the rear panel, makes life loads easier. It is a very easy mod.
You can also mix and match your valves. If you want a really nice clean OD channel substitute a 5751 in V2.
Also bear in mind that the clean channel loves pedals, so if you want a MArshall sound I'd recommend an Xotic BB. Clean boosts and light overdrive will also give you lots of options.
The Klein effect (on its own) is very subtle so I'd recommend getting used to the amp first.

Now you've mentioned it I'm going to call and get one from Hotrox today. I'm plagued with 'phonics with my stock EF86 (though only when its VERY loud).

I haven't really tried it out at rehearsal volumes (been using my Dc-30 ) yet but it was good for quieter volumes and better for the Fralin PAF style humbuckers in my Ibanez 335.
IMO my overtone has always been weaker sounding with H/B's than with single coils, though my Warmoth strat is a very warm sounding guitar due to it having a huge neck (Superwide 47mm nut and fat back profile). Still can't get my LP custom to really sing thro it, though that has got a Harmonic Design H/B in the bridge and a Fralin P92 in the Neck. I need a Plexi for that guitar!

alwalt is right, both channels use the EL84 poweramp tubes. If you get a problem with an amp its good practise to try and find out what is causing it and you can't do that if you change all the tubes at onces.
Pound to a pinch of snuff its the EF86. Channel 1 uses V1 and V2 (ecc83's) and Channel 2 uses v3 alone (EF86). Both channels combine to use all the remaining valves. V4 is the PI (ecc83) that splits the signal to the two pairs of EL84's (v5-v8).
Trial and error with replacement new valves will tell you whats wrong, but you need to do it in stages.

I have just been experimenting, based on what the way Matt Schofield uses his Two Rock. Turn your input volume down to 1 or 2. Raise you OD level to 8 or 9 and ratio to 3 or 4. Master on 4-5 (this is just getting the power tubes to break up a little but still not excessive volume) Now I know the accepted setting for the trimmer is 9:30 but using this scenario you will want to raise it quite a bit.
Gives a quite different tone and feel to the amp doesn't it? I think for the most part we don't play these amps loud enough to get both pre-amp and power amp into break up and what you never get from Gregor Hilden is an indication of how loud it is in the room. I bet its loud.

My philosophy has been everything has to be true bypass so I can get back to the natural amptone if I need to. Thats why when I built my rack mount Kleinulator I wanted to have a bypass switch, footswitcheable. Now you could argue that this should have been a dual bypass in that you might want to keep the Klein in the loop but take the effects out of the Klein loop, but I went for the simple option that took everything out of the loop, though it does leave me with about 3 foot of cable in the amp loop.
I use a TC G Sharp in the Klein loop and find it really quite good for the price, however its completely useless in respect of its stored presets. There is no way to find what the presets are, no way of naming them and no indication on the front panel unless you are prepared to do a lot of very slow knob fiddling or write them down!. So on balance only a good choice if you are prepared to use it effectively like a stomp box. Oh and the Flange and phaser effects are rubbish, chorus is passable.

Question: Why does this thread scare the shit out of you?
Because it originates from way back, from a time when Nik was getting a huge amount of flak from 'interested parties' (ie competitors who charge a lot more than him) and he took the OTS off his list of amps. Such was the support and clamour to get in back he did reinstate it and the resurrection of this thread raised a fleeting concern that it might have happened again.

Wow! That's some seriously good work there hywelg- in fact I'm now so embarrassed about my own handywork- especially as my drummer described my attempt as a 'converted bread bin'!!! so much so that I relented and gave Nik a call and he's done me a good deal on an empty Dizzy head cab & Kleinulator package - I have to agree on the choice of G12-65's - that smoother top end really warms up this amp's inherent brightness, and the lower sensitivity tames the ridiculous volume levels of this amp slightly- I still prefer the gold alnico's with the Overtone though... Thanks. Seems like I have to get my hands on a Gold don't I, Just finished a 2x12 for my OTS with an EVM12l and Eminence ToneSpotter. Nice but I'm beginning to see what people mean about the EVM, its a bit clinical, maybe I need something with a bit more 'character'

Muchless / DC 30 / Re: Will The DC30 Do A Decent Clean Sound?

The DC-30 is a fantastic amp and will do clean to quite a high volume, and when you push it louder your guitar volume will clean the tone up nicely.
It also has a half power switch taking it to a nominal 15 watts though its still loud but I have a 5w SE EL84 amp and I doubt that would be loud enough to get a good clean, mine gets dirty quite early.
Go with the DC-30 you really wont regret it.
