Muchless / DC 30 / Thanks to John Edmonds for live demo

Yesterday, on the blues jem John Edmonds played his wonderful Ceriatone DC-30 with a strat and he had absolutely killer tone – thanks for his great playing as well. Then somebody else played it with the Gibson LP and drive, tone and volume were just perfect. I definitely got a GAS attack. I want one. Nik – you are the MAN mate!

Hi guys,
I strongly suggest to try Jensen TORNADO neos and FANE AXA 12 alnico in closed back 1x12 or 2x12. Especially if you have 100w OTS. Also try Jensen 1X15 NEO or 1x15 Eminence Legend. In the future I have to order 100w OTS to build 1X15 combo – much biger tone than 1x12 combo and almost same size.

The choke tries to keep the voltage/current up when you hit the poweramp hard. Because its a coil, it will resist changes by fighting it with induction.
Can't tell you what it'll do sonically...
It will compress sound more, both - clean and drive.

Never had any problems with volume on OTS. With master on 12' o clock it's incredibly loud in a band. I use 2x12 cab with celestion g12-65.
I totally agree ! OTS is pretty loud amp. Once again check your tubes – pre and power end other components. Get celestion CENTURY speakers – 102db. Or take your OTS to amp tech.

Hi Mitch,
I made them from 1,5 cm AUDIO foam which I’ve bought on Ebay. Dimensions: 10’’ diameter with 2’’ round hall in the centre. Glued on the grill cloth exactly in front of the speakers. Because our cabs have space between baffle and grill you can hear unaffected sound from the cab near you, when listeners in front of the cab hear filtered, non irritant tone plus sound from the PA via built in mic. Soon we will incorporate this beam blockers in our cabs as option on demand.

For those of you with an OTS head: What cabinet and speakers are you using and why? Is this the cabinet you just happen to have or since you went out of your way to make/buy an OTS are you also seeking the best sounding cabinet/speakers too? This is a long shot question - have any of you tried Port City amp cabinets? http://www.portcityamps.com/Sorry if something on this line has been posted, I've searched some but I've not found anything. I have been intrigued by the port city cab for a while now. If you decide to spend the big bucks for this cab please let us know what you think. I run my OTS though an Avatar 2 x12 cab with a Vintage 30 and G12H30. The G12H30 gives a fuller bottom end and smooths out the tone. The Vintage 30 gives the bite. This cab makes just about any amp sound good. I have also AB'd the OTS with the Avatar cab vs. 2 x12 G12-65. And the 65's sounded dead compared to the V30/G12H30 combination. I recently payed a Speedster 25 Deluxe amp through just the G12H30 and it sounded glorious. I also played the speedster through a 1 x12 loaded with an Eminence Wizard and it sound like a bell ringing. And, I have also played a Carr Vincent (now Viceroy) with a Wizard in it and that amp sounded like a ringing bell. I just ordered an Avatar 1 x12 cab and an Eminence Wizard based on that experience. I am interested to see what the OTS does with that set up. I prefer my ported CCC cabs with built in microphones and new Jay Mitchell doughnut beam blockers. Sounds absolutely fantastic in small clubs, on big stage or in the studio. But they are more expensive then Port City, TDH or Buzz feiten cabs.

Hi Franne
Mods I’ve mentioned has nothing to do with high voltages or currents ! so no flies on me my friend. Lesson to non soldering guys: DO NOT MESS WITH TUBE AMPS !!! if you don’t know how to.
On the picture it looks like you’ve shortened trance’s low voltage power out cable. Very sorry about that! Take it to the tube amp technician !!!

Dr. Ika, Thanks for posting your mods. I still have a few questions. I have a new OTS with 100uf filter caps. What does making them 150uf do? I have a 100K volume pot. What difference does the 250K pot do? I play humbucking guitars, and love great clean tones. What's the best mod for best clean tones? Sure appreciate your help.
Hi Docmh, Mcinku is correct, loud bass notes will be tighter with 150uF caps and 100k will work better for drive. To get great clean sound (especially with LesPaul) permanently solder 68pF cap to the clean volume pot’s terminals and use 100k 3W slop resistor instead of 150k on the first tube. This will give you bigger, more open clean sound. Good luck
