It does smooth OD very well when run into the input of a clean-breaking up amp I don't try amps running at full OD much, so haven't tried I often prefer to put another OD inline before it to shape the sound a little
The clean channel gives a nice alternative sound if you want to vary EQ whilst clean

Thanks for the replies. Makes sense. If only they were not >200$ . I heard there are some eminence alternatives for the EV, but might as well wait and get the real deal.
in the mean time, haul your amp round to try as many cabs/drivers as your can, there is no guarantee you will prefer an EVM12L I have a BM HRM and had a Fuchs ODS and a Ceriatone OTS, I found my EVM12 a little shrill, there are other "clean" speakers around Alledgedly, the Eminence Delta Pro 12A is a near-clone. I have a Twin that runs into 2x Eminence ME12-1008LE These are not as crisp, but are very cheap now - you can pick these up used on ebay so cheaply, I prefer some amps through these than through the EVM12

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Overdrive pedals HRM -- help

Hi,
I have a 50 Watt HRM that I love and get some nice bluesy lead tones and bite with my strat. However I also love early plexi tones (Think ZZTop, Ted Nugent(Cranked Fender)). Can you suggest some pedals that can push the pre of the HRM so I can get those sounds.
More raw gritty power chordish tones. Ideally I want a plexi for those, but the hole in wallet from HRM is still not closed.
Thanks for your time. Love this forum and Kudos to Nik.
What is your starting point? are you asking for pedals to get to the ZZ sounds with a strat with your HRM settings as "clean" or saturated, or with OD on?

Nice post Tone Control. Its hard to find clips of the Bluesmaster. I had a hrm 50 watt and thought it was incredible but the clean channel wasnt for me. SO I may get a Bluesmaster. I need to get that hendrix, or at least a touch of it on the clean channel with slight a return breakup if 6 was 9 as in little wing or bold as love with a univibe....and get some of that Dxumble sound when Im in that mood, cause I cant aFord robben two amps. Do ya know waht im saying?

I'm not a Hendrix expert, but the BM50 covers John Mayer's range well (lots of lovely 60s fenderyness). I assume you'd need some modern take on Fuzzfaces to cover everything I use it with a Providence SOV-2, Lovepedal Eternity Sunburst, Zendrive 2, Centaur Klone, and a BJFE Honeybee clone, these cover most of my range and work really well with the amp and a strat. I was 10 years cold turkey with no OD pedals before last year, so I am fussy as hell, and these work extremely well with the BM50 running clean or lightly saturating I had a luthier who has played professionally for years round tp my place, he tried all my amps with no pedals, and chose this as the best over 2 Matchless, a Victoria, a Carr, etc. I have owned 7 Ceriatone amps, and this is the best so far I'd say the Matchless and Victorias match it for sound quality, but are less versatile My advice is buy a BM50 or 100 (the 100 really is switchable to 50W without triode mode, and I don't believe OT saturation is part of the sound anyway) The triode mode sounds weak to me. I much preferred it over the OTS, I assume the HRM would be like a tamed OTS

more info
• Needs Dumbleator.
Excellent summaries, just one issue: I have a BM50, which is probably my joint favourite amp out of 20 boutique amps I have played extensively I then tried it with a C-Lator, and it did nothing extra for me at all. I appreciate the Dumbleator may be a golden ingredient for others, but for me the BM50 is perfect as-is (Caveat - I am not looking for heavily-saturated lead tones, clean and breaking up is my sweet spot) The BM50 with a handful of boutique OD pedals must be the most versatile amp I have ever tried, but it will never be a heavy rock amp the way I use it (clean as poss, little touch of OD on the OD channel), However, I cannot think of any valve amp that can cover as much range in styles as this amp with 3-4 favourite pedals of your choice Cheers Tone

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: EL 34's vs 6L6's

Any thoughts on EL 34's as opposed to 6L6's in a 100watt BM HRM? My BM has 6L6's with transformers that can handle the conversion to EL 34's.
for info generally for others, Nik told me that the stock BM50 takes EL34s, just readjust bias to 35mV once they're in. I think I'll try some soon. I like the El34 clean in my matchless and my Carr

Best I heard so far is BM50 + Celestion Gold
I will try my Legend 1258 with it soon. Choice may depend on how clean you play it I set the preamp vol low, master vol high

May be... I have it on TGP. I'm hoping a ceriatone owner may come forward. I have quickly become a big fan of Niks work, and I'm eager to own one
I went the other way My ODS30 (+ 2 x 12 & 4 switch footboard) arrived in time for me to order a BM50 based on its sound. When I finally tried the BM50 through a Celestion Gold, I put the ODS out for a swap. I have no regrets. I think the ODS sounds a little more refined than a stock OTS, but the BM50 is much better for me

I understand where you are coming from I am pretty lucky to have found a good guy on this forum that does custom cabs and will pretty much beat any one else prices and quality. Unfortunately you are across the pond and the shipping would kill you or I would send you his way. Does Nik even do the cabs in house?
Todd
I asked him if he could do a different colour last year, he said that they are all made elsewhere, with black Tolex. I think the tolex has improved, since I had an older OTS for a while, which had less attractive tolex than my 2010 BM50 The good guy I found to build hardwood cabs is 2 hours drive away. Not sure if I want figured hardwood or tolex next time Cheers! Tone

Why dont you get the amp chassis only then get cab locally. Then you can customize it however you like. There are many cabinet builders that are reasonably priced and need work!
I did that for 2 amps To be honest, it took a lot more time and money than I thought (extra journeys chassis being a little larger than expected, etc), three other Ceriatones I've bought used had custom cabs. Some are good, some not so good. I just thought Nik might be able to offer more options on cabs now he has cut down the kit options. To be honest, I am not as concerned about custom cabs usually, just getting a little more variety in factory-fitted Tolex and hardware, and faceplates would be enough for me

There are few non-clone designs (although Victoria did OK when they stuck to Leo's diagrams)
Jim Marshall did alright for himself copying Fender's Bassman circuit as well.... Yeah, I am sure that Matchless are a boutique firm, and I heard a rumour that the DC30 was inspired by some other amp (well to be fair, they do admit it, and they have tweaked and many feel improved it - unless you're a traditionalist) Just keep making new models Nik, I'll buy them, but I'll buy more if you make them prettier

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: new valves
|
on: August 09, 2011, 07:46:02 PM

I think I share Mckinku's approach This will depend on your personal situation, i.e. how many amps you have, and how much you enjoy tweaking amps. At my current stage, money to buy amps is not a struggle, so I have 15 now (sorry, I was playing 7 years before I got my first valve amp, so it's only fair) When you have a few, you try to tweak each one to make it suit you, once I find the most inspiring tone, after trying the valves I have in stock, I leave it alone, or I buy some more to try. For me, often the change involves using a lower gain valve here or there. Sometimes a valve sounds rubbish in one amp or one position in the amp.
For amps that do not bring me joy, I move them on to someone else - I give up trying different valves in them. I can see that someone might choose to tweak a favourite amp to a finer level with rare vintage valves, but to me it's about having an instrument (amp+guitar) that inspires and takes me somewhere else, so when I get to that point, I play. I know some carry around different valve sets for different gigs, but for me, each amp has its own character, which you can temper a little with different valve types, but I think the amp type, valve type, guitar and pickups offer enough variation for me, although I can see that finer-tuning with NOS would offer some more options, I believe that for me, plugging in a different guitar will offer more still
None of this is meant as a criticism, I want to know what each of my amps can deliver, tune that a little if needed (in a repeatable way), and then play. I can see that a little extra can be achieved with extensive trials with different tubes, but once the amp is inspirational, that's mission accomplished for me and being able to repeat it is attractive, so I too usually stick to new valves (although I do have a few old EF86s and 5751s)
Cheers Tone
