Also here is a link to some technical data that possibly shows the LNFB plays a larger role when using a buffered loop like the d-lator. It's still subtle, but I did sort of notice that the difference with the LNFB was more pronounced once I had a buffered loop in place. http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=14837

Where is the switch for the negative feedback, inside? How does switch change the tone?
It's between V1 and V2 on the underside of the chassis.
273  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: any mods to tighten up OTS mushy bottom? on: May 24, 2011, 05:53:30 PM
I was using a G12-65. It just so happened a guy was selling one on Craigslist. He brought it to the gig, I threw it into a cab and wailed away.
That's a good speaker for the OTS, but it is a darker sounding speaker than others. Are you still having issues with "mushy bottm" on your OTS?

One other thing, it's probably not best to do any mods until you have a good 20 or 30 hrs. of playing time. These amps need a good break-in period.

That looks great. Fantastic!

Have you started sifting through all the information here http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=4&sid=6cb83cde085b2d8ac60c5815564d2cd7

What speakers are you using? I have an HRM50 and so far haven't had an issue with the bottom end. Although I haven't played it really loud yet. I have played it loud enough to hold up with a drummer, but not pushing it to it's limit. But I do know someone out there has modded theirs to address every problem they thought they had.

You're welcome..someone came to my rescue too, so I just was trying to pass it on. And it's not "hype".  I've have played a lot of nice amps, but this is the first amp that just puts a smile on my face everytime and makes it really hard to put the guitar down from playing. It's a true inspiration to play.

I don't have any facts to prove this, but I think a lot of us guys that find our "guitar playing lifes" journey ending up with a D-style amp have some things in common. I'm 46 and been playing since I was 14 or 15 yrs. old. I'm past the time of ever being some "rock guitar god" Tongue Yet I have come to a point in time where my playing is compenent enough to really appreciate playing an amp like this. An amp that is so touch sensitive and sensitive in many other way, that it boost my playing just that much more that it makes a very profound difference.

Play On......... Smiley

You're totally welcome. Glad to hear it.

Enjoy your new amp!
279  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: decupling caps on: May 20, 2011, 01:12:17 AM
I was staying out of this one just to keep the peace. But I went to eat dinner and come back to more of this. This is really BS. What the heck are these "karma points" and how do you give them to others? Seems like a rather arbitrary system to me.   Huh?

I can only speak for myself, but I'm probably very indictative of many that come here. Blues, you have to understand that I for one have been all though this forum and have found a lot of very good information, but I also have found  alot of confusing, conflicting, or just very indirect information. If you think it's not worth your time then don't say anything. And the (leathal danger) thing isn't going to cut it anymore. Make a general disclaimer and be done with it. I mean this in the most serious and respectful way I can convey this in words. I hope you take this the intent it is meant. Smiley

I wonder how many just give up and move on when they get banged like this. While I think a newcomer has the responsibility to be respectful and curteous to the members, they don't have the responsibility to read every word written since the start of the forum before they can ask a serious question. I would feel like I was asking someone to "kiss my ass" if I had that attitude.

Blues, I can tell you're a really smart guy and are a good source of correct information. I understand being busy and not having the time to answer every question. So, it would probably be best not to answer it at all. This is the only site for people specific to Ceriatone. It's not the most organized or even busy site. But, I can tell that when someone gets a kit and has an issue this is the first place they come. Having an attitude like "you fool, how dare you try to build a tube amplifier" just really sucks as a greeting.

I don't know if you know the webmaster very well, but a Disclaimer that's big and bold when you first enter the site would be great. Then we can all go about answering questions without feeling like we might be leading someone into danger. But really, if I give some directions to the store and they have to cross a busy street, am I really responsible if they hit by a car while doing it? I don't think so.

Sounds like the OT primaries are reversed. Try switching them around.
281  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Amp Mods on: May 19, 2011, 07:41:58 PM
I just tried biasing the OTS via black to earth point and red probes into the test points either side of the power tubes, flicking the amp on to Operate and switching the digi MM on. The readings kind of baffled me somewhat. The reading on one side was 150.6mv and the other was 170.6mv, surely I must be reading this wrong, but it's a simple thing to do. I also turned the dial to one end to the other and not much of a difference in readings. Maybe 20mv difference. Please help on this cos I seem to be doing something totally wrong.
Did you replace the HT fuse? First, are you getting any sound from the amp. Position the bias pot to it's halfway point and try the amp. If no sound, then there's a greater problem then bias. To answer your question, Yes there's somehting not correct in you bias measurements. When you say "earth point" are you placing the probe in the black test point between the two red ones?
282  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: How to test tubes? on: May 19, 2011, 06:21:04 PM
Does anyone have an idea how to test for microphonic or bad tubes?? I really don't fancy forking out cash for a big old AVO Valve Tester type of machine. Tubes are costing me a fortune lately. I use 6L6's and 12AX7's. Thanks!!
I think it might be better to explain why you think your tubes are bad.

Checking for microphics..one way is to take a non-conductive object like a chopstick and tap on the tube. You will hear noise and changes in the noise. And then things like squeeling and other nasty sound is a good sign.
283  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Problem with Overtone Special on: May 19, 2011, 06:14:19 PM
I can't seem to find any 500ma HT fuses. But I do have 1A ones available. Would these be ok to use?
When you say you can't find one, do you mean in your home or from a retailer?

Also, when you say the fuse "fell apart" this sort of makes me wonder if the amp took a hard knock. I would definitely check all the tubes, etc. for damage.
284  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Problem with Overtone Special on: May 18, 2011, 05:46:45 PM
I think you said you have the original OTS
http://www.ceriatone.com/images/layoutPic/OvertoneLayout/Overtone-Special-V2.jpg
That is the link to your Layout.
just below the Power Xfrmr you will see HT fuse 0.5amp fast blow.

If you go back a couple post's and read Soundperf's comment on the fuse ( he changed it from fast blow to slow blow per Nik ), that could be the reason it blew. If you put another fuse in and it immediately blows again, at that point I can only recommend bringing it to someone qualified to diagnose.

Todd
I should also add, that all my voltages internally were checking OK, so when I kept blowing the fast blo's is when I contacted NiK.
285  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Amp Mods on: May 18, 2011, 05:37:20 PM
How did he change the OTS cleans to Bluesmaster spec then?? My OTS's clean channel sucks ass. Apparently the Dumble is supposed to be a modified Fender Twin, my clean channel certainly doesn't sound Fendery at all. Zero headroom and sounds spanky than the chimey cleans Fender are renowned for. I use a strat through my OTS and the OD channel is a bit too fizzy and no bottom end at all, but when the PAB is engaged, it sounds much better, more open and harmonic. Maybe has something to do with the V30 I'm using instead of a EVM12 or G12-65??

There's got to be something wrong with your amp, either construction error, faulty component or improperly adjusted bias. Not something some mods are going to fix. Did you make it yourself?
I would have to agree with axiology on this one. It really sounds like there maybe something wrong. The V30 isn't the best speaker for the OTS, but I played through one for a bit and it wasn't that bad. What tubes and settings do you use? Where is the O/D trim set?

Edit: I just saw that I spelled forum member "axiology" incorrectly and could have been taken the wrong way. Complete accident....sorry.  Embarrassed
