I play mainly Strats and Teles and in my exprience you can get very nice clean tones with both low plate and high plate skyliners (like the OTS) with the lowplate skyliners (100k/1.5k on V1 and V2) having a tad better clean tones.
Before I got into Dumbles, I thought that my old Bassman head, was the epitomic of clean and blues tones. Now I think its got too much unusable low end and top end as well as a lack of middle tones, which is why the Tubescreamer (a mid boost monster) is so popular with Fenders.
I my opinion 80s and 90s Dumble are designed like Fender (blackface and silverface) should have been in the first place.
I really like the " ...with the Dumble, you can play at any volume and get all those overtones. With other amps, you have to open them up really loud to get the richness. Bring them down, and it’s like a big balloon that’s not inflated. Dumble? No, he’s got balloons at any size you want."
and
"...With its 12" Altec, the Boogie is a soprano. It gives me throat tones, nasal tones, and head tones, but not chest or belly tones. But now because I use four 12s with the Dumble head, I get the Pavarotti and Placido Domingo belly tones."
Only a true artist can come up with pictures like that. It reminds me of the 1985 Alexander Dumble interview in Guitar Player, where he compares tone fullness with a football field full of marshmellows.
Santana and Dumble are two comparable artists, although Santana is probably richer.
This is the Bludo that Matt was using on his last tour. Very different settings to his TR. Each amp will sound different, you just need to find your own settings
Hey Hywell, that looks like Larry’s amp (bluesmaster with flexiplex OD) which I’ve played when he was in London. It had an enormous bass response and pretty mild overdrive. I’m not surprised Matt has turned bass down and OD up.
Yeah the strat pups are single coils(under wound single coils). and the speaker is a Old Mesa Boogie Labeled EVM-12-L from the 80's that's been around the block The mods in the amp are: Skyliner EQ, Made to sound not as bright as the orig. BM. The OD side was made to sound more like the standard HRM as opposed to the BM OD.
I am using a Holy Grail Verb in the loop too.
So in essence your preamp is a standard HRM?, but the poweramp is a BM
If I two (2) 8 ohm 1x12 cabs. Do I plug first cab into "Main" and second cab into "Extension" and set at 4 ohm?? What are pro's and or con's you have found with using 1x12 against 2 1x12's? Thanks!!
The jacks are wired in parallel, so it doesn't matter if you use the main or extra - even with only one cabinet.
And, yes, if you connect two 8 ohm cabinets to the amp, you should switch the impedance to 4 ohms.
Thanks, Yeah bluesmaster(high plate/skyliner)......It came alive when I got to turn it up for the first time. I can't wait to put some NOS pre amp tubes in it.
Are you sure about the skyliner. Usually Bluesmaster has its own tonestack more or less derived from a Fender Bassman/Marshall ditto.
I'm thinking of buying my first Ceriatone amp. I currently use a Vox AC30 and a Fender Blues deluxe but being a life time Santana fan I'm really interested in getting an amp that gives the same creamy sustain he gets from his Dumbles. I know the overtone is a clone of the Dumble but I don't know which model to get. Their website is pretty useless at explaining the differing features between the models. I'd only be interested in a 50 watt version as I never play anywhere that would need 100 watts but what the heck is the difference between the Special, the S&M Special. the HRM and the HRM Bluesmaster? If anyone could post a simple explanation of the diffrerences of these models I'd really appreciate it.
Hi Welcome to the forum, You need the Special (OTS) model, thats the route to Santana Sound. Regards
PS: Great user name, you've selected, maybe you can help select a goo cognac someday
