i think I've posted this before for speaker comparison
Now some experience shearing: We have built two 4x10 cabs for very dedicated player from Portugal. One with Jensen tornados and another one with Celestion gold’s – GOLDS are the best – period! Jensens were bit dark but cab is much lighter than with gold.
All time champion was vertical (Robben style open back) 2x12 with EV on the bottom and Fane 12AXA alnico on the top. HUGE sound and very balanced, sweet tone. Speakers were 16 ohm each. They were in parallel for 8ohm and safety if one blows (which is unlikely). But downside is that cab is VERY heavy, two heavy speakers plus 18mm Baltic birch plywood. Another great 2x12 is Celestion G12-65s or Alnico Ggolds or if you are looking for huge lows than Celestion G12 K-100s. For the lighter 2x12 cab Jensen tornados are great, very smooth tone. My personal favorite is small, closed back, front ported, tuned cab with EV or new Fane studio 12L speaker .
Hi Dr Ika given you have used Fanes, Celestions and now EV speakers with your OTS, which is your favorite?
would you use the EV in an open cab?
Definitely the EV and yes! It will be great in an open back as far the back hall’s diameter is smaller than 12’’. 8’’ or maximum 10’’ would be OK, cab won’t loos low frequencies.
Great to see you in action again and I’m glad you are well my friend. What a lovely video with great explanations and samples. Take it easy with bikes! We need you much more here in a guitar world. Best wishes
Nice to hear from you. I'm sure Shane did great job on your Plexi. Probably most important is a reliability matter with trannies. On the other hand I had no problems with Nik’s transformers so far. Sound wise I can’t tell the difference to be honest, except MMs are bigger, cleaner sounding (I had two power tubes removed so amp was 50watt). But that’s because tranie is 100 watt itself. I don’t know, MM climes that their transformers are the best. I wonder what you think? Tell us after you play your plexi well. Cheers mate
Which version of your OTS was that - what are the main tweaks on this one?
Thanks for watching and kind words. It is ordinary 100w Overtone Special but with the Mercury transformers supplied by Nik. They work on 230v and here in UK is 240 so I have more clean headroom. Other tweaks are: 3,3 mf cap on presence, 0,01mf cap on middle, 550pf on Deep switch instead of 330pf. 440 pf on V1 s NFB instead of 0,5mkf. 68k on V1 slope resistor. And finally three way switch with 47, “off” and 100pf caps on master. It works for me and hope it works for others. Cheers
Ika my man I really like your band... you sound so "fluently"... maybe just one criticism... man if you play suffer music, you better suffer... you need to show some emotions... but not go SRV on me - just a bit more
...and the amp sound huge
Mcinku thanks my friend, I’m so suffered, tiered and bored that don’t have any emotions left in me my man. Must be f***n old age and cruel world around as well. Perhaps I have to start to smoke some happiness inducing substances and change my style to reggae.
Hi, Probably Nik suggested to use full 16 ohm tap on the output transformer. Than you have to get two 8 ohm speakers and put them in SERIES, it will give you 16 ohm.
Many thanks for watching and your kind comments, highly appreciated. Here is another one from the same concert – instrumental. Also clean rhythm and clean boos with front pickup and bridge humbucker. Cheers
Two Torhados (16 ohm in paralel = 8ohm) will give you great lows and punch, also they are very light weight. You can also try Celestion K-100 !!! they are like EV but much cheaper. They are heavy though.
