cool so its not just me then!

its just that for something thats supposed to be based on a fender circuit, i havent really seen any attempt at a nice fender bluesy tone!

Totally agree, in the email discussions I've had with Nik he's told me that it will do good Blackface or Tweed type Fender tones, but I've yet to hear any demos of them.

Actually I take that back, there is (make that was - can't find it now, hopefully someone on here will have it) one demo out there on Youtube of someone doing the outro from Layla and they do get a good Fender-type sound from the amp...
152  British Style / Plexi Lead, Bass, Superlead / New Amp - Brown 100 on: June 17, 2008, 01:11:10 PM
Please could someone tell me what differentiates this model from the other Plexi replicas?
153  British Style / Plexi Lead, Bass, Superlead / Re: Help with kit vs. parts question on: June 17, 2008, 01:09:38 PM
Hi everyone, I'm seriously considering getting one of the Marshall 50 or 100w clones, and there's some confusion.  Let me just paste my email to Nik:

On the 1987 Plexi, for example, Package 2 is $530, with assembled
board, front plate, rear plate, chassis, choke, OT, PT.  But when I go
to the parts, the assembled board, chassis, front and rear plates, and
transformers + choke come up to $360.  Why the discrepancy?  Does the
kit require less assembly?

Nik responded that the $360 "doesnt include pots knobs selectors, can caps, iec
socket, jacks, etc etc etc."

Does all that stuff add up to $170?  What else is required for one of the amps?

Thanks!

I'll bet it does. They may only seem like small parts, but just think about the cost of new knobs/scratchplates etc for a strat - I easily got to £100 when I changed the look of my strat and there are more parts to make up an amp...
154  British Style / JTM 45, 50 / Re: JTM45 - Good Choice For First Build? on: June 17, 2008, 01:04:50 PM
Okay, so I found the instructions over at Metropoulis Amps for assembling their JTM45 kit. Will these be the same as for Nik's?
155  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Good amp to compliment Overtone.... on: June 17, 2008, 12:55:34 PM
Ive got a Marshall Bluesbreaker alongside mine. Depends what you play I suppose. If you want a Marshall sound youll want a Marshall because the OTS just wont get there, but if you tend to stick with Fender type sounds then perhaps get something that does Fender better, something with a really nice tube reverb perhaps, like the Deluxe Reverb Reissue.

Cat

Hmm...except Nik doesn't make a kit of the Deluxe Reverb...

I've heard the OTS does a reasonable Fender Blackface sound (and according to Nik will also do a Tweed type sound!!), so I'm thinking that maybe I will go for the JTM45...
156  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Challenge to owners on: June 17, 2008, 10:16:24 AM
Hi guys,

no offense, i think everyone that has posted a clip has hit some great tone, and are all good players.  But to be honest i think they all kind of lean around the same sort of tone and no one has really showed the versatility that this amp is supposed to have...

whilst the distorted tones of this amp have been thrown around greatly in here, i am yet to hear an attempt at a mellow "make your heart melt" tone...

so, considering this is a competitor of the two-rocks/fuchs/etc.. i was wondering if anyone who owns an amp could please try to replicate this, from a two-rock signature:

if that sort of tone can even be approached on this OTS, then i think we would all gain a much greater appreciation of the versatility of sounds this amp can reproduce.

i only say this because although the carlton/ford tones are sweet, i would like to see if you can hit more traditional bluesy tones...

ps i think if that clean sound above was matched with a slight boost from an ibaneztube screamer it would just about be heaven from a speaker Tongue

cheers guys Smiley (and im sorry i dont mean to sound like a troll!)

Thats odd I was just about to post something that said exactly that, I am very tempted to buy one of these amps as they sound as if they should be amazing but all the sound clips or vids I've seen or heard I find quite sterile, and they are all noodling solo stuff! can someone out there give us some nice warm and earthy hendrix A bit of castles made of sand perhaps or  nice warm blues rythm, and you're right everone seems to be dialling in the same tone, I find it a little spiky considering this amp is supposed to be modelled on Blackface Fender type amps, so come on guys give us some lush warmth and maybe even a  chord or two perhaps and lastly some very different examples of what is tonally possible with the amps switching and eq.

cheers

T Cool

Chords..??

Blasphemer..!! ;-)

Actually I'm very much in the "let's hear something different from the OTS camp"...
157  Ceriatone / Overtone / Good amp to compliment Overtone.... on: June 17, 2008, 08:51:17 AM
I'm looking to change my amp setup from my current Fender Blues Deluxe to a 2 amp setup of an Overtone Special and 1 other amp.

When the time comes I'll be getting the Overtone professionally built, but intend to build the other amp from the kit.

I've narrowed down the candidates to a JTM45 or 5E7 Bandmaster, but can't decide which to opt for.

I've heard that the OTS can't do Marshall-type sounds, so am leaning towards the JTM45, but then again I've always been a Fender guy so that pulls me back towards the 5E7.

Which do you think would be the better amp to pair with an OTS to give a flexible stage setup?

(And yes, I know the obvious answer is get all 3....and one day maybe I will, but for now I have to choose!!)
158  British Style / JTM 45, 50 / JTM45 - Good Choice For First Build? on: June 16, 2008, 08:32:58 AM
So I'm soon to place an order for a kit to have a go at building my first amp.

Is the JTM45 kit a good choice for a first build? I've never built an amp before, but have basic electronics understanding and am competant with a soldering iron.

I understand that Nik's kit don't come with building instructions, is there an online resource with any guides to building the JTM45?

Also, just so I can be sure I have all the right tools, and since my old ones are getting close to needing replacing.... Could someone please list what tools I'll need to build the JTM45...

Thanks
159  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: New Overtone available on: May 30, 2008, 12:30:41 PM
Four 6L6's....looks tasty!!

Any idea how that will sound compared to the 50 - presumably the cleans will have more headroom.

I wonder if it's got the same mods done to it as the 50W model - at leas tthe ones that apply...

Decisions, decisions - it would mean another month of saving - but would it be worth it?
160  American Style / BF Champ, Vibro Champ / Re: How many watts? on: May 29, 2008, 12:24:38 PM
Both amps are 6 watts. You can look up the info on these and many other Fender amps here:
http://www.ampwares.com/ffg/
I refer to this site constantly; it is a treasure trove of fender information.

Thanks...
161  Website, Store / Suggestions / Re: Blackface Fenders on: May 29, 2008, 07:52:20 AM
I was thinking about this one last night and the BF Fender I'd like to see the most is a 64 Vibroverb - either with or without the mods made by Cesar Diaz to SRV's...

I'd guess that Nik could build one as a custom job, but the cosmetics probably would be more inline with what he currently produces. I'd like to see a range of BF amp clones, with BF cosmetics....
162  American Style / BF Champ, Vibro Champ / How many watts? on: May 28, 2008, 02:58:52 PM
How many watts are the 2 champ amps?

Or if you prefer, what Fender circuits are they based on so I can look it up that way!!
163  British Style / 18 Watt / Re: 18 watts question on: May 28, 2008, 01:16:27 PM
Sure,

The basic 18 watters are a simple two channel amp with a vibrato channel with tone and volume controls and a normal channel with a separate volume and tone.

The TMB version has a treble, middle, bass tone stack in place of the vibrato.

The TMB EF86 has a separate ef86 pre amp tube feeding the normal channel.  The tone pot on the normal channel is also subbed out for a 6 way tone selector.

Ok, I'm a newbie when it comes to Brit style amps (shame on me as I'm from the UK!!), what difference to the sound does the EF86 have?
164  Website, Store / Suggestions / Blackface Fenders on: May 28, 2008, 12:44:11 PM
Am I the only person here who would like to see some clones of Blackface Fenders.

I know Tweed Fenders are where it's at for a lot of people (me included most of the time), but it would be nice to have a choice.

Or a Vibro King...
165  Website, Store / Suggestions / Re: Dumbleator on: May 28, 2008, 12:41:17 PM
Look up the Klien-ulator on the Overtone pages, or email Nik - this is the Dumbleator equivalent...
