mcinku - Yes, I understood and I should have worded things a bit differently. My bad.... It may well be in the basic design to drain the current regardless of which way you switch the power off. I'd err on the side of switching the standby off last just to be smart. I've done that on amps in the past - leaving the standby on while switching the power off - and you can actually hear what sounds like current draining off thru the speakers. Your test validated that and combined with what Nik is saying, I'm ready to jump in this weekend. Cheers! Ken

What Nik has been telling me. You made a case for switching the standby off last ( a minute should be ample time to discharge capacitors) doing as it's intended to do.
That makes me feel much more comfortable.
Thx! Ken

Hey poipounder57,
Thanks for those links. That makes me want to think twice about just jumping in and doing this so quickly. How effective is it to flip the standby on while the power is off in the OTS? Even Nik says that's all you have to do. Jack, do you have anything to add to this discussion? What procedure do you use to get the charges out of the chassis before you work on it?
Cheers - Ken

Started emailing Nik this past weekend and I've gone back and forth with him a number of times. He's really great to deal with. As a new OTS owner, he's been most helpful to me, sending me a lot of the mods some of you here have been incorporating into your amps. You sure can feel the enthusiasm he has coming through loud and clear.
If he was sick, you'd never know it.
Cheers - Ken

Ceriatone / Overtone / Have you guys tried this speaker combination...

Hi -
New guy here. I recently won an OTS on eBay and couldn't be happier. I just received an Avatar Vintage style 2-12 cab that I've thrown a G12-65 and a Greenback into. I'm floored by the sound and it's just huge. I can't wait to gig this amp!!
Just wondering if any of you guys have tried this combo as opposed to running two G12-65s together? I don't know how much the cabinet is helping (probably loads!) but the bass response is immense. It really makes a Tele sound marvelous.
Just wonderin' .. cheers!
Ken

Hey Jack -
Awesome. Yes, when you have time to work it, I believe it would be a real help to many of us here that are a little overwhelmed by a layout or a schematic.
BTW, is there a concern for getting zapped while doing some of these mods? I've heard where if you have the amp off and then flip the standby on, the major current reserves are drained. Is that true? I'd like to avoid getting a nasty surprise while in the unit snipping and soldering away!!
Thanks! Ken

Jack, I'm a new guy here and I've recently won an OTS on eBay. I consider myself a lucky dog! I've emailed Nik and he sent me mods, many of which are things you're doing.
I'm not real good at reading schematics so was wondering if it would be too much to ask if you could mark up/circle or otherwise notate a copy of the schematic and then post it so we can all see what areas of the board you're going to for the changes. For example, I can't seem to find the cathode bipass/preamp caps (the 2 - 2.2 uf ones) for the life of me... Blind, I guess...
Oh, and let me add that you're a very masterful player. Love your clips, my friend. Do you play out at all?
Cheers - Ken

Hey there... I'm new around here but have been lurking for a couple of weeks. I was fortunate enough to win an OverTone Special on eBay recently. I emailed Nik - what a great guy, indeed - and he sent me this list of mods, most of which I'm sure have come from suggestions here on this board. While Nik was gracious enough to offer these up, he hasn't said what each change does. I'd like to know what to expect from each mod. I may decide it's not one I'd like to make. Can you guys pass that info along?
From Nik's email: a) Change bright cap from 330pf to 120pf b) Change snubbers on v2 from 270pf to 390pf c) Get rid of the 15 pf cap on MV d) get rid of cap and resistor network on the effects loop jack e) Change the 1uf and 2,2uf cathode preamp caps to both 4.7uf. f) Change the cap on mid boost (deep) switch to 390pf g) See my latest layout. The level pot is now 100K. And the resistor near the OD trimmer is now 220K instead of 150K
Thanks in advance for the helps! Cheers - Ken
