I will be recording with it this week so I can have a better answer for you then but I can at least answer the first two.
-The clean channel is very balanced-with that said the only control for it is volume. Whatever you put in is what u get out.
-The drive channel will do bluesier drive tones but will always have an edgier feel to it.
-I believe he is shipping jj tubes though i got mine from elsewhere.
-I intend to use a celestion gold but have heard v30's and greenbacks also sound good

I need to replace my trannies for the actual spec'ed trannies from tds still but it sounds pretty good and my buddy and I built the headcase for $50. DIY for the WIN!

The amp really is only appreciated by those that have dynamic in their playing. Metal guys dont think it cuts or punches enough but I think as far as real dynamic, semi overdriven at the most guitar tones, its very hard to beat the jtm45.

so I ran through it for a bit with a friend that is very experienced and we concluded just rockin the trannies i had and leaving the switch on the tube rec position would be safe.
conclusion-effin rocks
-pullin about 277v of the 3 pin..which should be safe for an el34. Pre amp tubes runnin safely as well.
-gonna run it for a bit but so far lower volume test make for amazing tones. gonna have clips posted fairly soon.

I found it on the darker side. Think Fender Bassman which this design is very much derived from.
I found when recording that a 2x12 combo with an alnico gold and vintage 30 really brought the dynamic of the amp out. I am not sure iof the specs of both speakers match all that well but to my ear it was the best combo out of the choice of a greenback or an heritage 30. The greenback also sounded very good with the amp but I thought the heritage 30 was way too dark for the amps design.
I wish I had the recording still but the band seems to have removed the song from their myspace.

the alnico and v30 sounded best with all pickup combos (humbucker, single coil)
If I had to choose only one speaker to play through with this amp it would be the alnico gold.

Yeah I am sure it changes the tonal values a bit. but I am willing to do it just to get this amp rockin. who knows it may be right for me. I dont need it to be any louder, 30 watts is plenty, its more a case of I already have a pt set for a 50 watt tube rectified amp.

-anybody have any ideas of how badcat accomplishes this?
23  Muchless / Stray Cat 30 / stray cat 30 to 50 watts? on: October 10, 2010, 12:49:50 AM
I have the stray cat 30 kit and as some may remember I have been having a helluva time finding a cheap alternative for trannies (I already know about tds and westlabs thank you.)
I was browsing bad cats website and saw that they offer a conversion of an existing hot cat 30 to 50 watts. I assume this involves a few component changes as well as a transformer change.
This may work for me as I have a tranny set from mercury for the jtm50 kit nik offers. You think you guys can help figure out which components would change.

26  Muchless / Stray Cat 30 / Re: trannies on: September 30, 2010, 04:13:22 PM
yeah i am looking for the specs on both trannies, the pt is obvious i think.
27  Muchless / Stray Cat 30 / Re: trannies on: September 28, 2010, 06:24:12 PM

28  Muchless / Stray Cat 30 / Re: trannies on: September 28, 2010, 02:37:09 AM

29  Muchless / Stray Cat 30 / Re: trannies on: September 25, 2010, 08:00:34 PM
Yeah tds definitely has them and they have been great at corresponding with me. I just cant afford a full set. I have been wondering about hammonds. Any suggestions on a certain pt and ot?
30  Muchless / Stray Cat 30 / trannies on: September 25, 2010, 12:01:33 AM
