Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Clean boost pedal?

"While I agree that it will come down to personal taste, I personally often find it useful to hear what other people are using -- not least because so often they come up with interesting ideas or unusual pedals that I would never have thought of trying. I suspect that's all the OP was looking for -- just some ideas, not someone to lead him to tonal nirvana."
Thanks tboulette - that's exactly what I was after. I wasn't expecting a definitive answer, just what other people were using. Thank you, everyone, for all the imput. Cliff

Ceriatone / Overtone / Clean boost pedal?
|
on: September 29, 2011, 11:28:29 PM

Anyone out there using a clean boost pedal for their OTS's and if so which one is their preference? I've been looking at the Keeley Kantana and Creative Audio Mk 4.23 (which has a somewhat "treblely" sound on the YouTube demos) neither have I tried. I have a Xotic RC Booster which sounds better with other amps, so I'm not overly fond of using it for my HRM Bluesmaster.

Ceriatone / Overtone / FX in C-Lator loop
|
on: August 26, 2011, 11:32:39 PM

Hey guys,
I just got a TC Electronics M 300, put it in my C-Lator FX loop and am messing around with it. Anyone out there using one... any suggestions on settings of the C-Lator and M 300? It seems to act differently than the straight ahead reverb pedal I was using.
Thanks!

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: EL 34's vs 6L6's

Thanks 212 mavguy, nice description, kind of what I'd like. I think I'll try the EL 34's when I get the cash for 4 matched ones ( or rather 2 matched pairs ). I'll use your settings when I take it to my tech although he's not of the hooter bias school of thought. He's a great builder ( built me a 16watt "tweed deluxe" that sounds wonderful ) but somewhat opinionated I'll have to convince him to try it hotter. Besides the NOS ones, anyone have favorites of currant production EL 34's?

Thanks blues- I've heard that about the D-style - that the power tubes don't make that much of a difference. A tighter bottom could be better though I always thought that EL 34's had more a pronounced mid-range than the 6L6's but I guess it's not that obvious in this type of circuit.

Ceriatone / Overtone / EL 34's vs 6L6's

Any thoughts on EL 34's as opposed to 6L6's in a 100watt BM HRM? My BM has 6L6's with transformers that can handle the conversion to EL 34's.

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Most Strat-friendly model OTS

I find the Mesa, probably due to the small box, more "mid-rangy" and not quite as smooth as the ET65's. The Avatar is a bigger box and more bottom but not overly so considering and I compensate this with my settings.

I agree with sduck. I've a 100 watt BM that I think sounds fabulous in both modes with my Strat! The Strat does have Bill Lawrence (Wilde) noisless pickups (2-280's and 1- 290 in it. I do run it with the PAB on for the overdrive and use two diiferent cabs depending on the gig. One is an Avatar 2X12 with 2 WGS Et 65 and the other is an 80's Mesa Boogie 1X12 with the original EVM12. It does sound completely different when I use my ES 335 - creamier overdrive and such but I do like it with the Strat as well - just a different color. A third way I use it (for the classic rock band gig) is just clean - PAB on - pedalboard with overdrive and distortion pedals (Cusack Sreamer 2 - Wampler Plextortion). The Bluesmaster is a versital and beautiful sounding amp IMHO.

I agree with Tone Control - "The cost saving of buying a kit would not be enough to justify the extra expense..." Not being a builder and after at least six months of research (of which many of the members of this forum have been an incalculable help) I bought a Bluesmaster 100watt that nineguitars did the trannies and some mods to. Besides the comments of my peers at gigs, I've shown it to techs who actually work on a lot of the other boutique amps and D-styled clones. They are tremendously impressed with Nik's craftsmanship (artistry?) and feel it is at least as good as the current top builders if not better. My point is Nik's completed amp (and of course it can be tweaked to the individual as the original D***** was) is the way to go for quality and cost. I love this amp!!!
