I haven't really tried one of these heavy duty clean speakers. That doesn't mean difficulty in getting overdrive on the lead channel does it?

they're just cleaner speakers, the EVm12 being the cleanest. It just means the speaker doesn't colour the sound.
A vintage 30 for example adds loads of extra bits of distortion that many find attractive for a guitar - if you ran hifi through one you'd be appalled
Personally I found the evm12 too clean and bright for a BM, I prefer a celestion Gold, again a speaker that colours the sound too
17  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: So I sold my bluesmaster and ordered a OTS FM Mod Eagle! on: July 20, 2012, 10:48:42 PM
Alright man! Lunchbox heads

One Mini OTS & One Mini modded-plexis (yeti, chupa, etc...)

18-20 watters, i guess 6V6 for the OTS & EL84 for the mini-plexis

Don't we need both?

I think pricing would be fair & in line with the lunchbox craze

I always felt my Express was light and small for what it was.
PTP lunchboxes would be great. No need for 6v6s though. I have a very small amp with 4 x 6L6 (40W-ish)

If any of you guys ever dismantled any compact valve radios from the 60s, you'll recall that even complex valve gear can be made small - the size of typical heads was most likely just to match 4x12 back in the day - mostly amp chassis are 75% empty

This is how I set my Bluesmaster 100 & Klein for last gig - it's built by Nik's team - no mods done. I use it with a 1x12 open back EVM12L. I'll adjust the treble and presence controls depending on how loud I'm 'allowed' to go on the amp - it has a half power switch which I'll use at home but not for gigs. Rear OD trimmer left at 11 o'clock.

@SDuck - I'd be interested to know how you've adjusted your HRM trimmers - I still haven't touched mine. For a while there thought I'd like a bit more mids & less bass on the OD but it's growing on me gradually as I've got a better handle on the gain structure. Still loving the clean channel boosted on this baby!

I'm a bit confused, isn't that a normal ODS?
They do look like the settings I use on my BM though, except I use lower preamp vol with higher master vol

Alledgedly, the Eminence Delta Pro 12A is a near-clone.

I have not tried many Eminence drivers, since in the UK Celestion are good value.

But, in an old 2x12 cab, which was made to match my Fender Twin II, I have 2 x Eminence ME12-1008LE (from the 1990s)
I would not say they match the EVM12, they are smoother and not as bright or clear, but they share that very clean quality that few guitar drivers have - all the normal guitar drivers sound distorted compare to these. they would make a good cheap backup to an EVM12 I think, you can often buy these drivers used for £50 or less

If you want to use FX in the loop, then it is a good idea - it worked fine for that for me.
I choose to use all my FX up front

I just meant that for me, the K-lator alone did not add extra tones I wanted, although I read other people find it does things for them, letting them get different kinds of overdrive - I just wanted to ensure that people thinking of getting a K-lator know that not everyone feels the same - for me the amp sounds better without it

BM50 is my favourite amp out of my 15 boutique amps after 2 years or more. I play this in preference to Matchless and Victorias
Just tried a Two-Rocks Classic reverb, the first shop amp I have tried that is comparable. The jet ones weren't as good as the BM50
tried a Kleinulator, it did nothing for me
22  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: HRM Bluesmaster setup advice on: July 19, 2012, 08:23:49 PM
I thought John Mayer didn't use the OD channel on his Dumbley amps at all, and used a Klon for OD. Isn't the 2-rocks single channel?
http://www.two-rock.com/products/limited-edition-a-discontinued/john-mayer-signature.html

For my BM50, preamp vol at 2.5-3, master vol at 6-8 does it for JM cleans - low bass and high treble and presence
input a Honeybee or Klon klone for the OD, although you can get nice JM-style OD from the BM, drive=2, level=5

Great though my EVM12 is, (this info for others, since you have expressed your preference) it isn't the magic answer for every amp and pair of ears
I personally find mine works well with only 30-40% of my amps, and definitely not my BM50 with a strat - but I use the BM50 with low preamp gain, high master, which is not common

Did you know that Eminence do a guitar/PA speaker (which is what the EVM12 is I understand) similar to the EVM12 but much cheaper?

to at least form an opinion before buying with your own ears, try Watford valve's sound selector, which plays many speakers with the same guitar and amp
24  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Anyone else not modding their amp? on: January 15, 2012, 07:56:08 PM
Some OTS owners have built their amps with the deep switches wired upside down, as some of the layouts showed it upside down. A few came from Nik that way, as the error wasn't caught right away, mine is one of them. In other words, down is on and up is off.

Gregg

Ahhh...thanks Gregg. I never knew about this. That's not so bad.  Wink

up is down for me too

£280 for a piece of perspex? Good luck to those guys, I wonder if they sold any?
26  Community / Classifieds / Train wreck expression with VVR in the UK for sale on: December 20, 2011, 10:27:27 AM
Lovely  oak and birds eye maple case

Master vol, VVR

Anyone interested? I just don't use it enough, I don't mind keep it, but if anyone in the uk wants one, give me a shout first
27  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Newbie questions regarding FX loops/running pedals on: December 20, 2011, 10:20:29 AM
Whenever you use the passive fx loop, you are changing the amp,
the circuit no longer feeds as designed, you have added the FX's input impedance, eq changes and output impedances
All fx are different. You may be lucky and find some that work well, but the normal rule is that the cables must be very short

The 'lators are intended to remove these problems

If you use the preamp OD in the amp a lot, reverb should go after the preamp
If you play with the Amp set between clean to just-breaking-up, and use pedals to get your OD tones, then there is less benefit from adding time fx in the loop, they work well before the preamp

If you OD the power tubes mostly (apparently this is not as common as people think), the I am not convinced any reverb will work well before the amp or in the loop, I think you'd need to mic the amp and add it through the PA, which is the best way anyway. Quiet delays and chorus can work before the amp

Bookmark Dr Ika's list
This is the short list for any ots or hrm owners

The fane aka 12 is worth attention, whilst not as nice as a celestion gold to my ears, it's close, and is cheaper, and takes 100w, useful if you want a 100w Alnico 1x12

I found my favourites, Alnico speakers less appropriate for the OTS, and other rockier and brighter amps.
I love the alnicos on tweeds, the bluesmaster, matchless, vox, but not with train wreck, el84 se amps , jtm45, 70s, 80s twins, etc

Think about the beam too, mic and pa is the only way to be certain of getting your sound out there
I see more people using a transparent screen in front of the cab, to benefit even more

Btw Has everyone here heard of the doughnut-shaped beam blockers?
29  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Overdrive pedals HRM -- help on: December 20, 2011, 09:54:19 AM
I think the lovepedal eternity sunburst is the best TS style pedal I've tried, lots of touch sensitivity
To crisp up the sound with a little grit, I like a klon clone, and to go a little further, a providence sov-2

For a valvey nice OD, zendrive2 works well with all my amps

To add old supro style OD, which is a rare trick, a honey bee or honey bee clone will add a lot to your options, very very few pedals or amps can do these sounds

With all these, it depends on what the amp is set to, subtle pedals with feel would be pointless on an amp already set to full overdrive
30  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: EVM 12L Classic Speaker Question on: December 18, 2011, 08:54:10 PM
They might be a little shrill, thats right. I'm running my OTS 50 with 6L6 WGC tubes, very warm an "jazzy" sounding (think of John Mayer). This combination, EVM 12L and 6L6 WGC, seems to be "the deal" fpr me.

yep, it's all down to what works for each of us, therefore I recommend to anyone - try a loaned EVM12 and others rather than just saving up for an EVM12. The EVM12 will not be everyone's favourite
