Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Tube Recommendations

A friend of mine bought over an old Mullard yesterday and we put it in V1 in my HRM50.
All I can say is Mullard ECC83s in V1 = WINNER.
It smoothed out everything and had the best warm tone in both clean & lead.
I prefer a JJ 83S over my old (very old :-) ) Mullard - never tried a NOS though.

Regarding recommendation of tubes in preamp
V1+V2 = JJ 83s, V3 = Sovtek LPS 83,
V5+V6= TAD 6L6 small bottle (RCA Blackplate copy) or SED Winged C

Fair enough Allow me to share control settings: What you do with the OD trim, I tend to do with the input volume (and tone controls) instead: I primarily use the amp with singlecoil pickups. Input vol at 7 (front panel) tone controls all at 5 and Presence at 5 However, when my band mate uses the amp with his Gibson 335 (with PAF 57 pickups), Input vol at 4 (like Robben) tone controls: Treble 7, mid 4, Bass 4 and Presence at 7 OD trim is set at 25-26K and OD Drive (on front panel) is almost always at 4

I have installed pots on the bottom of the chassis (under the component borad) of my HRM.
Truth of the matter is that once you have found the sweet spot for the pots, you don't want to mess with them. In fact I plan on changing the pots to trimmers placed inside the chassis.
I would advise you to try an ordinary hrm board inside the chassis and see if you can 'live' with that. Also you are at risk of getting af noisy amp if you have the HRM at the front with long wires to the board.

I don't quite understand why one would draw the line between guitars and effects pedals on one side and amps on the other side. Why not clone guitars and effects pedals, when we clone dumble amps IME its quite easy to clone effects pedals....much easier than cloning difficult and temperamental amps like the Dumble amps. When building overdrive /distortion pedals all you have to be carefull about is selecting and testing various diodes for the clipping section. I do understand if your passion is COLLECTING original pedals, but IMO its quite easy to copy these, I you just want the original sounds.

Just got mine, very nice. I use a SOV-2 OD in front of it and keep gain on Klon between 6-8 pm , almost nothing. I leave the Klon on all the time at current moment and o to the SOV-2 for leads. Klon sonds best with a cranked amp, but what good boost or od pedal doesn't IMO.
I did a test between Klon vs Keeley Katana, being used as a Clean Boost and I would say the Klon was a 10 and Katana was a 8. That being said for $150-$200 for Katana, it might be a better value if on a budget.
Bills launching a new Klon (same spec, but in a smaller package), but taking for ever - so I got a good deal for a brand new one a guitar player had sitting in his closet never used for $500.00, which is too much, but better then the $700-$1,000 they fetch....crazy. Once people knew recently that Jeff Beck and John Mayer were using them and newer ones in Silver with no horsey.....price jumped a bit.
I don't wnat to spoil your fun buying exotic pedals at premium prices, but perhaps it would be wise to build a clone of the Klon to take out on the road without risk of loosing something valuable. The Klon is a sophisticated tube screamer (like Fulltone's fulldrive range) Check out this Klon kit (I'm not share holder in that company nor have I build the kit myself, but hey check that price!!): http://uk-electronic.de/onlineshop/product_info.php/cPath/105_192/products_id/1253?osCsid=d4cef826b6ac9a60dc55d28256af18f9

I've heard good things about Ethos, I think a large unit though. If not playing a Ceriatone and want that Dumble-ish tone, you might want to look at a ZenDrive or Dumkudo pedal, I've played these and they turn an amp into Dumble-ish like amp IMO.
+1 for the Zendrive

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: OTS Burn in

Hi Rich,
A lot of folk wrote burn-in off as snake oil and voodoo. I'm not one of them.
From what I've heard, caps are the main component that burn-in. I could be wrong, but that's my understanding. What I do know, is that the amp definitely has a different feel after it's been on for upwards of 3 full days. I'd say it's not as stiff and the bloom is more pronounced. That said, it may be subjective.
Stephen
+1 but not only are the caps burning in but the tubes, transformers, and resistors also play parts in the burning in. IMO anyone who puts burning in the same category as "snake oil" is stubborn. There IS a noticable difference in not only tone but also feel. Speakers also require break in but that is a different story with the cones ++1 My ceriatone 50w went thorugh a lot of modifacations, only to return to its original design after the burn in period. If you want a 'burned in' sound from the get go, you might consider adding a cap (1 nf) with a trimmer (try 500k) across the OD 'master' volume. This allows you to gradually reduce the top end of the OD section, which tends to be the tone sinner in a new amp.

Very nice recording - delicate rythm playin' your part and a nicel layed back soloing. Overall, your are a great seasoned band - like driving a luxury car.... relaxed yes. but with lots of power in reserve. :-) I love your drummers crispy snare drum playing - and man that bass player is something else too. However, you all blend in very nicely. Great, don't change a thing and don't touch a dial.
