136  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Quinn 183 pre with Mill Creek/Ceriatone BM PWR amp on: March 18, 2011, 11:10:45 AM
Sounds very nice, probably the best drive tone compare to your older recordings.
playing is lovely as usual.

Give us a clean tone with same guitar and also comparison to the Ceratone's preamp please.

Cheers

Doc, I know that one of the extra pots on the front fascia is the OD treble bleed mod, but whats the other one? PAB level?

Thanks

Hi hywel,

two three way switches on the right are master volume high pass capacitors 47pf and 100pf which I only use in case of longer than 5m loop cable or very dark speaker. actually  never use it with my speakers. Another switch is super drive's (you know I have additional high gain drive channel) high cut capacitor filter to match drive and superdrive tones.
Also you know that I don't have a PAB which is only useful when amp is on JAZZ setting.
My amps are rewired and I only have ROCK setting which is the best setting for D style amps. Also I like a real boost with no tone change which is magical on clean and OD.
To control the boost level I have pot in PAB's jack hall.
Let me stress, no D style amp comes closer in flexibility to this two beauties probably except glaswerks OD II or Red plate magic dust with multichannel OD. Loads of great amps went trough my hands: 4 two Rock sig reverbs, Kimok, Fuchs OD 50 and 30, Skidstrup 50, three Bludos 70's  80's and Oj (80s is a fantastic amp belongs to Pete wood, probably tonally the best sounding and recording amp - left on the photo). And all of them are NON HRM circuits! with most naturally sounding, liquid overdrive.

Cheers

I run two amps in STEREO when I play larger venues or record.

Sound samples are recorded with custom telecaster - 50w OTS - moded Digitech RP200 in the loop (no C lator) left out to amps return and right out to other amp's return. RP200 has volume/expression pedal and switches channels as well. Cabs have recording microphones inside.

Samples:

1. Drive (NO PAB !!!): Neck and bridge pickups. Switching boost on bridge pickup. FXs: reverb, ping-pong delay and lesly simulator on the end of the deive sumple. Synthish sound with short stereo delay.

2. Clean - chord swell, stereo chorus, big clean with tremelo.

3. Clean with ping-pong delay and paner.

It's about 255V DC on it and it won’t change much anyway in BM.
If you want to change amp’s overall bass response, introduce NF on V1(OTS type) and try different capacitors from 0,05mf to 500pf and put it on switch near V1.

140  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: HRM Internal Tone Stack and PAB: A *possibly* different approach? on: February 20, 2011, 12:59:06 PM
it is kinda frustrating. i'm actually considering disconnecting the post OD tonestack all together and converting my PAB to the pickmaster cleanboost Mod just do i don't have to deal with it anymore. grrrrr

Halleluiah !

For me, the best Dumble tones are from NON HRM tweaked amps.
I was lucky to be around Robben’s and Larry’s sound checks and rehearsals in London trying their gear. Because I used to tweak friends amps, I had my nose inside of several two rocks, fuchs, bludos, D’ltes, skrydstrups, volt and ceriatones.
I repeat, personally for me the best tone is coming out of 80’s high plate ODS with Bluesmaster-ish preamp and slightly tweaked OD section.
Additional options are: regulated clean mega boost and super drive channel with additional relay and foot switch.
Also it would be fear to say that recently I tried Bludo Ojai and loved it. Great clean and OD but dreadful PAB though.

Cheers

Ohh, that was really nice.
142  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Bias point for EL34's on: February 06, 2011, 02:04:36 AM
Is anyone using EL34's in there Bluesmaster or HRM? If so what mA are you setting the bias for? I'm using Winged C (SED) 6CA7's.

Hi,
In a Bluesmaster at 470v I was happy with 39 ma

Check this out:

@Pickmaster: ref the idea of adding a couple of caps on the master vol via a toggle switch to change the top end, i am interested in doing this on my HRM BM. Of course, my amp technically has two master volumes instead of a blend like the standard OTS, so what i want to know is if i should or if i can put a toggle on both master volumes and if it would make much difference on the OD channel?

Hi plasticvonaband,

Good thinking!!!
If  a “master” works only for clean and a “volume” on OD works independently from main “master” then you will have additional  tone shaping options which is great.
Just chose a capacitor values for your taste on a gig volume.
Good luck my man.

Sounds great Sami, lovely playing too my man.

Hey fellows, I’m just kiddn’ ya.  Grin
Just stirring a shit little bit to make forum more alive, looking who’s gonna throw stones at me Tongue.
Probably I’ve got TAG’s syndrome. Not surprising, spending to much time on the amp garage forum.
Yes C-lator is OK, just make sure you have good nonmicrophonic tube.

Erwin,  I have 68 – 0 – 120pf  caps with a three way toggle on the master pot my man. Wink

Be cool   Cool guys, laugh a lot – good for the health.

146  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Celestion Gold, how long on: January 19, 2011, 01:02:16 AM
Note from CELESTION:

Important Note! Before breaking it in it's advisable to "warm up" the speaker gently for a few minutes with low-level playing or background hum.

Break in a speaker with a fat, clean tone: turn up the power amp volume to full, and control the level with the preamp gain. Use a level that will be quite loud, but not painful in a normal size room.

Have the bass and mid up full, and the treble at least half. On your guitar, use the middle pick up position (if your guitar has more than one pick up) and play for 10-15 minutes using lots of open chords, and chunky percussive playing. This will get the cone moving, and should excite all the cone modes and get everything to settle in nicely. The speaker will continue to mature over the years, but this will get it 95% of the way to tonal perfection in the shortest time.

Cheers

Where is your dumbleator? (C-lator) somebody asked Larry Carlton.
Oh this piece of shit! Replied Larry and I totally agree, not because that Larry said so but because it really changes the tone of the good amp for worse, unless it’s a parallel one.
Probably it makes an average amp sound bit better.  Wink
I’ve tried three of them. Two made by bludotone end one by C which is very similar to bludo.
Get the parallel one or go for Suhr mini mix, fuchs Tube FX loop or Verbrator.
148  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Fuchs Verberator on: January 13, 2011, 02:06:03 PM
I use one in combination with my stock OTS. I like it, it has a nice reverb on tap only mine has a constant hiss when used as an overall master volume (i.e. when you pull out both the send and return knobs). I've heard it has something to do with the decay, each one of the second version seems to have this problem... I should get this fixed. Other than that it's a fine unit. It's about the size of two linked MXR small boxes. I wonder how it compares to the Dumblelator?

It is a dumbleator. plus parallel mode, plus reverb !!!
If you open it and separate wires from each other, also remove them far from the unit walls buzzing will stop (hopefully).

149  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: EV 1x12 thiele cab double micing sound test on: January 08, 2011, 11:19:02 AM
where are the mic capsules from?
Any tips on mounting them?

Cheers
Tone

Hi Tone,

Capsules are neodymium instrument mic inserts from Germany, custom made copies of a Zenhiser  609. Usually we by them in boxes of 20 for £35 each.

Here you can check out all info about mic mounting and other design tips.

I think your amp has evolved to be a very different animal with all your wizzardry. An electronic Darwinisme of some sort perhaps? All for the good anyway
