British Style / 18 Watt / Re: 18 watts question

Sure,
The basic 18 watters are a simple two channel amp with a vibrato channel with tone and volume controls and a normal channel with a separate volume and tone.
The TMB version has a treble, middle, bass tone stack in place of the vibrato.
The TMB EF86 has a separate ef86 pre amp tube feeding the normal channel. The tone pot on the normal channel is also subbed out for a 6 way tone selector.

what (technically) do the deep and rock switches do? After reading a lot of the reviews, it seems that a lot of people here like their overtones, but aren't quite getting the Robben Ford/Larry Carlton tones they were hoping for. While I realize that much of that comes from technique and fingers, it seems to me that a lot of that magic smoothness comes in the mids of an amp....does anyone agree and/or has this been addressed (in a mod or tone settings that a new owner might not know of?)
thanks!!!

Technically there is a lot of speculation and interpretation as to what's going on with the Deep and Rock/Jazz switches. Here's how I see it in a non-technical way. The Deep switch... It really doesn't add in bass but rather gives the illusion it does by shifting the upper mids lower. In that sense it might be better to call it a "wild" vs "tame" switch. It also knocks a bit of volume off and assuming due to the mid shift the gain is smoothed a bit. Thus...good for a strat and Texas blues. If you mess around with the midcap values you will get different shifts as you move the base mid range. The Rock/Jazz isn't really worth talking about. Right now I'm sussing out how to add the mid boost switch mod in that spot.

Killer tones, killer playing. I laughed in the last few seconds of your vid with the fish-eye effect......I could have sworn a resemblance to HAD. He was rather hefty in his amp building days...lol.

Hello all! I can't happier by playing this amp! Carltonlish GASing is no more.
Would like to know how all all brothers think about the 3 bands EQ of this amp? It's like very subtle with its, especially the mid, wondering there is any problem with mine.
Assuming you have the PAB switch set to off...... Yes, the mids are quite subtle from 0 to 10 but I have found this to be the case with most amps based on the Dumble ODS circuit. You're not going to get fender scooped at 0 to massive mid push at 10. Set your deep and rock switches and adjust the tonestack to taste. So, I don't think you have anything wrong with your amp.

Good question.
I put handles on the speaker cabs but usually not on the heads with the edge string. Ruins the aesthetic...lol. If using corner protectors,, yes, it gets a handle. I usually build a simple case for each head for the cost of materials only. As you can tell, I don't do this for the extra cash...lol.

I've built pretty much everything but a 4x12...sorry. A few things to consider.
Don't forget you need some serious hardware for gluing up a 4x12.
With the price of lumber, tolex, and hardware for a 4x12 (including shipping) it might be wise to try to source a used 4x12 cab and just re-tolex it.

looks great! how do you do the piping channels on the corners? First, thank you for all the nice comments. Critiques are welcome too, of course. The channels are cut on the table saw using a sliding sled that holds the cab at 45 deg. to the blade. The string is hardware store grade hookup wire...lol. Tolexing is a bit more involved than a simple cut corner but I like the look.

Let me know what you are planning. 1x12, 2x12, combo....etc. Speakers you are going to use factor into the equation as well.

Good job, great pics. One bit of "constuctive" criticism...if you don't mind... Watch your lead dress particularly in the power section. You have a lot of runs that can be significantly shortened. Even the build Nik has pics of on his website of the 20watt is a little "loose" IMHO. Just something to think about for your next build. Cheers, enjoy.
