I've been experimenting with a 12AY7 in V1 of my Bluesmaster. I figure if it's gonna be tweedy, go all the way so far I really dig it. Still nice and warm, but a lil brighter.
Well, I live in Temple Terrace, just outside of Tampa, FL I have a modified Bluesmaster 50 2x12 combo, an Ampeg Jet 12R, and a Roland Jazz Chorus. I have an Epiphone Lucille with Bare Knuckle Mules, A Gibson 70's Tribute Les Paul Gold Top, a PRS Santana SE with Bare Knuckle Emeralds, a Danelectro DC First Reissue, an Epiphone Les Paul Standard Flame Top, a Martin Goya Classical, and A Gretsch Boxcar Roundneck Resonator.
I am a dispatcher for my local Police and Fire Department
Dr Ika knows his shizzy when it comes to modding these amps. But...
If you really want that classic clean JM or SRV sound:
Stevie Ray Vaughn-SSS 150w 4 x6550 pwr section with Reverb and filter section,- The amp was said to be voiced like Jackson Browne's "White Glove" Dumbleland for Bass. SRV's SSS was essentially a bass amp voiced for guitar frequencies.
John Mayer- SSS 100w with 6L6's, all the features above, this amp is very special and sounds incredible with harmonics that just jump out. Two-Rock based their Sterling Signature on this amp and Henry Kaisers SSS's. This amp can be heard at countless recording and Youtube vids.
SRV used Browne's amp to record some of the tracks on Texas Flood. That being said, some of the best clean SRV sounds I have heard were from the el mocombo concert during Lenny, and that was just a good ol Blackface Twin. Freddie King got awesome clean and dirty sounds from twins and showmans. Good headroom helps alot and can make your clean tone loud and punchy. I played through a BF dual showman in my early 20's. Loved it, but the sweet spot was at such a high volume that no one else could be heard. The SSS that Nik builds, and the original types with the extra driver tube sound good at all volume levels, just as an FYI.
That said, my BM has some of the best clean tones I have ever heard, especially with the right speakers and tubes. It IS a different beast than the rest of the OTS line, and the OD is not OTS mid singing d-style OD, it is more raw and gritty and, well, bluesy with the HRM bypassed it is even more so, and it's just the way I like it
One thing is certain, the Bluesmaster lets you find YOUR tone, whatever that may be. I think it is one of the most flexible amps ever built. That can make it frustrating to nail your tone down at first, but once you get it, you got it!
The BM Clean can do Tweed Bassman to Blackface and everything in between. It is quite big, bold, and VERY responsive. Boosted cleans, whether via PAB or an outside boost are quite amazing. The Bluesmaster is really a different animal, indeed.
i think there was some concern with noise from the filaments going through the relays or vice versa, or the voltage regulator not liking the 6.3v or some such, i can't remember now.
if it hums when touvhing the pole pieces, sounds like the leads are swapped on your pups, or the ground at your guitar's jack, or both. My Dano has no more hum through the BM than with my other amps, and my Strat didn't either, in fact, possibly a lil less due to the better filtering on the BM compared to my ol Sovtek and Ampeg.
