Chris....have you posted any sound clips? I'd love to hear the D'Lite.
Hi Jeff, No, no clips... One of these days I promise. My recording setup just isn't doing it for me. I've come to the conclusion that the Fasttrack USB interface is a POS. So right now anything I record sounds nothing like the goodness of the OT and D'lite. I picked up a Zoom H4 a while back but haven't really used it that much yet. FWIW the D'lite is a fabulous amp that is raved about by an evergrowing community of great players and is really nice to have side by side with the Overtone. I have a spare Ironsounds buffered loop board set here I've been thinking of trying to impliment into the Overtone. I have one in my D'lite and it works very well. The Overtone is pretty low on real estate so I may have to experiment with an external mount.
However, the stock loop seems to be fine with the effects I'm using in the loop using as short as possible patch cables.
I imagine that would change if you cranked the preamp up a bit. Possibly. The only effect I use is a DD20 and I can't find any serious degredation in tone at the standard settings for a gig. That said, I don't usually use effects in the loop of my main amp at a gig because I run a simple dry/wet rig.

This is different from the generally accepted dumble layout. Are you guys interested in getting closer to what the "standard" is?
Ohhhhh Yes!! I am so very interested....Ummm. Which standard might that be....?? Do tell.

Sure. 330K snubbers on V2 "dumb" the OD down a bit..... Also, a 220k in place of the 150k resistor in the OD entrance (before the trimmer) works. If you keep your master down you could clip out the 15pf master cap. These are just a few of the many ways to tame the edge.

Custom amp building, Prototypes and other amps / Discussion / Re: Where to start.....
|

You'll definitely want to start small and work your way up. Even a 50 or 100 watt Plexi is going to be a diffuicult first build. If you take your time and are extremely diligent, it isn't impossible to build one as your first build, but it is much easier to start with a small Fender (Champ, Princeton, 5E3) or something like an 18 watt Marshall.
I am also very interested in building and repairing tube amps. i just bought my first tube amp (ac30!!!!!) and i cant believe the difference in feel, dynamics, and SOUND! amazing. i want to build a ceriatone amp very badly. i e-mailed nik and he said that the kits don't come with instructions....where and how do i find out how to build these? do i just look at the schematic? if that is the case, then i am certain that building an amp would be out of my league until i learn more....very sad what is the easiest to build? i dont mind a small project... Hang on. There is never anything sad about taking some time for learning. Amp building does require some basic knowledge but the learning curve isn't too steep to get you building successfully. Nik provides a layout not a schematic. There are plenty of pictures of amp builds all over the various builder forums for reference so as long as your choice of build isn't too complex you should do fine. For a first build I would suggest a head as the chassis will have much more space for inexperienced fingers. My first build (way back when) was a home brew 18 watt circuit and it came out fine with a very limited amount of know how. An 18 watt lite is a great first build.

hello ceriatoners! I recently found out about ceriatone....i think that it is a great idea! absolutely fantastic. I am a DIY kind of guy....so, naturally, i would like to build an amp. did any of you build your ceriatone amps? can you please describe what i would need to do to get this project started...for instance, i dont know if i should buy a complete kit, a board etc.... also, what mechanical skills and tools do i need to successfully assemble one of these?
I hope i dont sound to stupid...i appreciate the help....THANK YOU in advance
I would say just jump in. I used to build from scratch sourcing all the parts, drilling chassis etc..but with todays kit suppliers those days are long gone. I think personally the most gratifying and educational means of building an amp is from the "bag-o-parts" kit but do remember that Nik doesn't supply anything other than a component layout so you are on your own. There are however a number of really great amp building sites out there with friendly and helpful members should you run into problems. When you jump in...don't jump in the deep end. An Overtone or DC30 from a bag-o-bits is a serious undertaking. On the other hand, don't build something you aren't going to get satisfaction from. Champs are a cool little amp but the level of difficulty in a 5E3 or 18watter isn't all that much more involved. Do your homework. Once you flip that power switch the beast that you just built can bite you and at worst outright kill you. To prepare....Keep asking a lot of questions...nothing is ever stupid...well, within reason I guess...lol. People are busy so if you have questions, be specific and to the point. Read, study, read, study, read. The most important tid bit is be prepared for the fact that you will become addicted to amp building and Nik is a great guy to give you that next "hit"...lol. BTW, solder fumes contain THC....yaaaahh. Cheers, Chris

Hang in there Rui. I have my own little bit of good news today....I ordered a couple Zendrive pedals a long while back and got a confirmation that they are done. Woo hooo.... We'll see what all the fuss is about in a week or so.

V1, V2, V3 and V4, V5 where V1 is directly in front of the footswitch. V2 is OD and V3 is the PI.
A JJ in V2 will knock off a lot of edge but IMO too much. It really is quite dramatic. But then again I'm using a RWandB which is a bit of a dull speaker to begin with.

JeffreyB,
I posted a thought or two in the other thread where your clip is. Great playing BTW and I think the tone you are getting is pretty damn fine, too. Tube compliment and trimmer settings might get you where you want to go but I'm afraid I see a soldering iron in your not too distant future....Snubbers, MV cap, OD entrance, OD bypass network, plate and cathode values are only but a few tricks in HAD's bag of mojo for dialing in "your" tone.
