i don't think the Red, White and Blues sounds close to a G12-65 at all, in my opinion. although the design is similar with the ribs on the cone and the mesh dome, it is a different magnet structure all together, and has a higher wattage raiting as well, which effects the overall tone of the speaker. that being said, it couldn't hurt to try it, or its "cousin" as emience says, the governor.
In reality, it all comes down to what your ears like, and what tone you want to hear. Try out a bunch and see what ya like! ya never know, having a vast collection of speakers could come in handy one day, as they all sound different and may help you find a tone that is "in your head" down the road
Yes, keep a good range in stock. Tastes do differ, I definitely use my amps in my own way But if you're buying a speaker for a specific amp, my advice is to start with the speakers everyone else recommends. As I say, I tried several with the BM, and was not impressed with the amp until I bought Celestion Golds, I might have even sold the amp and kept the Fuchs

I had a Fuchs ODS30 with a 2x12 cab, with Red White and Blues The amps sounded nice, a bit flatter and blander once I had the BM50 to compare it with. I tried the Fuchs 2x12 with every amp I had. It was the darkest cab, and only very bright amps worked with it, it was very poor with the BM50. The only amps I liked it with was the Express when distorting heavily. I have several other cabs that the Express sounds much better with. The Fuchs ODS was tuned to match those speakers I think, and every other amp sounded quite poor with them, a very flat rounded-off tone. The BM needs a lot of help in being bright enough (if you run it cleaner). On every amp I own, the presence is set to 2-4, on the BM it's set to 9, even with a Celestion Gold Until I had the Celestion Gold and the Fane, I had preferred the Fuchs ODS, and thought the BM50 didn't live up to its reputation. Now the Fuchs ODS belongs to someone else, and the BM50 is my joint favourite amp with my DC30 On that subject, Matchless and Badcat cabs sound OK with the BM as far as I recall Anyway, if the G12-65 is close to a RW&B, I'd leave it alone, I think it's for Marshall high gain style amps anyway, this is a Blackface fender style amp, and they fitted Alnicos back then. I do fancy trying an EVM-12L at some point though, Pickmaster is an expert, so it must be good. Actually, check this review: http://www.thegearpage.net/board/showthread.php?t=190607

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Anyone else not modding their amp?

For my BM50, the only mods I want are: - rewire the deep switch the correct way up - reduce the PAB level (add a trimmer)
For my OTS, I would be more critical: - PAB is nasal on a strat, only seems to sound pleasant if bright switch is on, perhaps the bright switch itself should also change the PAB EQ to complement it?? - Deep switch is not a deep switch, it's a mid boost, and a bit too much - a trimmer for this, or rewire as a real deep switch - maybe mimic the HRM in not having the master affect the OD output level, it's nicer to be able to whack up the clean master independently of the OD

They have had a holding page on that url for as long as I can remember and I've tried emailing them and never got a response. Personally I'd just deal direct with Nik - his service seems to be far, far better!! Probably best. It's cured me of worrying about long distances. After getting 3 amps from Nik directly, I thought about importing a Matchless directly, but in the end found a used one in England already. (The markup on Matchless amps is huge in England, second hand prices are barely cheaper than importing a new one from the USA, with full postage, insurance duty and VAT paid)

AFAIK Jeff Beck has been playing a JTM45 for sometime I saw him a few months ago, and it looked very much as if the whole gig was off the single JTM45 sat on top of a cab. All the tones you mention were there He had a few pedals too though!
My Ceriatone JTM45 sounds excellent as a saturated cleanish lead tone, with my time based FX and compressors in front if needed tbh though, a Bluesmaster 50 would be a much more versatile amp, with good blackface tones, and you don't need to use the FX loop - if you keep the preamp volume down to 2 or 3, good delays etc can go up front
Either would beat anything a normal guitar shop will attempt to sell you

I think so. Useful if they are near you and have the model you want, or you are reluctant to buy on recommendation. I think the price is the same-ish, and if you go straight to Nik, you can order the custom extras, which has to be the nearest you get to being indulged like a big name player

Ah, that import duty site is very useful! Which amps did you go for? Essentially, im after one that'll cover quite a bit of tonal ground for some function work and just general playing. In terms of sounds, i guess that two rock sound john mayer gets, especially on the try album, all the way through to a pushed marshall sound ala van halen 1. I guess just enough to cover anything its possible to encounter in a function band! I've heard a demo of the fuchs, sounded fantastic. Thanks for the help My ceriatones are in my sig. Plus a 5E3 My BM50 drove my Fuchs ODS away It's the most flexible amp I've owned - it's very good for John Mayer sounds too - but I think only with a Celestion Gold or similar Not sure you'll ever get VH out of a Fendery 6L6 amp though. Probably stick to Express or Marshall clones for that I think a BM50 or BM100 plus a good OD pedal that contrasts with the Dumble OD is as good as you'll get to an amp that covers everything. The clean sound is great, the light OD is great, the switches all do something useful. it does heavier OD too, but I don't use it that way Just be aware it takes a lot of work to get the dials right for you

I could see Nik was a good guy, so I bought 3 amps on my first order All arrived on time, nicely packed use this: http://www.dutycalculator.com/new-import-duty-and-tax-calculation/Set it at $200 postage and £10 insurance I'm not sure what the current postage is. postage a combo chassis is more expensive, so think about getting a cab here - better to have it separate anyway. A 2x12 is better for an OTD really. The OTSs are all much more flexible than a normal amp. Decide on what sounds you want though. I reckon the Bluesmaster HRM works the best for me, but I've only tried 2 and a Fuchs ODS

Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Post Your Bluesmaster Settings

I'm not as fond of the heavy D-overdrive, I run my stock BM50 (into a 1x12 Celestion Gold) to sound clean bluesy (Dave Gilmour/Robert Cray clarity) and just add a little grit with the OD, on any strat - usually the neck pickup
Vol=2-3 deep off bright off mid off Rock treble 8-9 Mid 3 Bass 2 Drive 3-5 Level 5 Master 6-8 (the higher the Master, & lower preamp vol the cleaner the clean, but the darker the sound, hence the treble and presence settings) presence 8-9
OD trim around 11-12 oclock
When I sometimes raise the preamp vol and drop the master, the treble and presence have to go down the same number of increments
Try this as a change to whacking up the preamp vol, you'll get some extra sounds
For a humbucker I switch on the bright, and drop the treble and presence a little I have the HRM set to stock, then dropped the treble a little to even out the treble on OD. When the master is run lower and preamp higher (and the treble and presence down to match), this is too dark on the OD. So: if you run the clean master high, you need to raise the treble and presence, and the HRM can trim that off the OD. If you run the master at 5 and the preamp high, you may need to tweak the HRM the other way

Hi JD0x0 I guess the clean really. I like the character of the overdrive. Am I right in thinking that whatever I do to the clean will affect the overdrive anyway?
Hi Tone Control I'm using a 77es335td with the original pickups. It's the model with coil tap, so I can get a single coil vibe. I use a clator, and an eventide H3000. As for the way I use the amp controls, it really varies a lot. I've been trying it at different settings to see what it can do.
I haven't tried that model OTS. I saw a previous post that said they could not find a setting on it that worked when switched from clean to OD: each needed a diff EQ setting, and the OD was harsh. Can you get a good clean sound at all? If you are dialling out the harsh OD, that would mess up your clean. That's why I like the HRM BM Having said that, I could get a sound working from my Fuchs ODS (non-HRM) and my standard OTS, but D-styles take some work to get your settings. for me, on the non-HRM ones, I dial the left OD pot down, but that's just me. You have 4 or 5 pots to play with after all, before the EQ, so it needs some serious experimenting. Does the PAB sound nasal, or the OD?

Hi there Just wondering if anybody has any suggestions or pointers to past threads which might help me out. I’m trying to get a fatter, warmer, more gloopy!?,richer harmonically, sound out of my s&m50. At the moment it’s feeling slightly boxy, nasal, flat. Sorry for the possibly unhelpful sound descriptions, not very scientific I know! I’ve had a 3 way switch put in to change the slope resistor values between 150k,90k and 30k, which makes a big difference. I’ve also got a 3way switch on the mid cap, but tend to favour the original .001uf. I’ve been using a celestion gold, and recently tryed my boogie’s speaker ( EV black shadow), which was a great improvement IMO. It certainly had a lot more power, so the golds gone on ebay, to be replaced with an EVM12L, which I think is the same as the Black Shadow?? I’ve seen Pickmasters mod of putting a 3way switch across V1 which changes between 470pf, .05 mf and off.He mentions that this fattens the sound, so that might be a starting point. Also I’ve read that putting a 47pF or 68pF cap across the master opens the sound up. Does this give a similar effect to a bright switch? Any pointers would be appreciated, Thanks Tom
what guitar and pickups are you using, and what is your normal goto amp setup?
