2  Ceriatone / Overtone / Buy my Overtone on: November 23, 2009, 06:12:58 PM
I am selling my overtone special.  It's a little over a year old.  The only problems with it are a cracked face plate and the LED light is out.  It was assmbled by Ceriatone.  It has all the original tubes etc...  THe only thing I ever did was adjust the interal trim pot.  I used it on one gig and taken to other gigs as a back up, but never had to use it.  Anyone interested?
3  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: Effects loop gain control for OTS? on: August 12, 2009, 01:56:35 PM
Thanks for the link...not sure why I couldn't see the damn thing on the product page Tongue

You guyz are right about the gain getting all fucked up without the buffer.  I used my Overtone at a gig for the first time with a pedal board in the effects loop and I had distortion on the clean as well as the drive.  Ya know what?  Even with that, this damn thing sounded pretty fuckin sweet!  Smiley  I even got compliments from the other guys in the band.  If you've read any of my other posts about this amp you'll know that I have had less than glowing things to say about it but, maybe I've been converted after all... I've been all over the ceriatone product page...where does purchase this mythical Klienulator?

I feel your pain... mine is less than stellar too   Huh?

I put an additional eq in the loop and this is the ONLY way I can get something that I like out of it.  I just seems typical of Fender style amps.

Alex,

Your set up is truly mighty!  I see you are Bonamassa fan... sweet!  Wink

You are a fine player.  I think your style showcases these amps very well.  Thanks for sharing!  Smiley

That .5 amp i way too low.  Mine blew every time I turned it on when I bought it.  I believe that I replaced it with a 1 or 2 amp.

 Good luck!
8  Ceriatone / Overtone / Low end response mods...does anyone have any or know how to? on: July 20, 2009, 02:41:42 PM
After playing the amp for almost a year I've come to really dislike the low frequency range of this amp.  I think that it could be warm without being flabby and "farty".  This is typical of all   fender style amps that I have played.

Does anyone have a mod that will fix this?

I tried googling "CCC cabinets" with no luck.  What are CCC's? Is there a website?

I have the same issue with the Overtone. Experiment with various length cables in the the FX loop.  Currently I am using a 15 foot cable in the loop which really reigns in the high end response.  How long have you had your amp?  I have noticed that the sound mellows over time.  It still has a lot of high end...that just seems to be the part of it's sound.  The speaker & cabinet make a significant difference in it's tone.   The Overtone is not designed to produce that big low end thump like a lot of modern amps do.  If you are used to a really tight, punchy low end you'll be disappointed with this amp

I am using mine with 3 differnet cabinets.  My primary recording cabinet is a late 60's Marshall 4x12 with original greenbacks.  I know most players don't like this cabinet with the Overtone, but I am getting a really good sound.  It's also a very convenient for me since I leave that cabinet mic'd up in my studio and just swap heads when I want a different sound.

I also use it with a Peavey 4x10 open back cabinet.  This may be my favorite sound for this amp but I haven't been able to capture the sound for recording yet. While this is a great sounding cabinet, it doesn't seem to record well...or maybe I just haven't found the right mic and placement combination yet.

My main stage cabinet is a Genz-Benz G-Flex 2x12.  I have retrofitted mine with  Celestion Vintage 30's.  The stock speakers for the Genz have a very harsh high and mid response.  Changing to the Vintage 30's drastically improved the sound of the cabinet.  Generally every amp that I have played through this cabinet sounds excellent, and this is certainly true for the Overtone Special.   For low end response and projection you can't beat this cabinet.

"Louder=less fizz?"

yes...I've noticed that too and that's another reason for "riding" the guitar's volume... If you think about it the first "stage" (tone, gain etc...) is the guitar.  With more gain on the amp the guitar's volume acts more like a tone control IMHO.  crankin the amp and playin with the guitar volume is just another way to manipulate the tone.

I'm sitting here playing right now ...it seems to me that you can dial out more of the fizz by setting the amp for a little more gain that you would normally use and then back off the guitar volume BTW...I'm playing a Les Paul with a burstbucker 1 in the bridge position
14  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: not really impressed...yet on: October 13, 2008, 07:36:00 PM
If I could find some one  local to mod my OTS I would send it out today.   There is no way that Carlton and Ford's amps work this way.   I would tell anyone who is thinking about buying one of these to ask tons of questions to the guys that own them. Is is possible to purchase it with custom specs? . ( I wouldn't have know what to ask for anyway...)My doesn't really sound like the clips that I heard.  I get the impression that most of you are very handy with the soldering iron. I have broken more things trying to fix them in my life than I can count...so changing capacitors and resistors etc... ain't gonna happen with me.   I suspect that I was hearing amps that had been modified.

Nik seems cool, and by no means am I saying that the amp is a piece of crap.  It is very nice and makes some VERY cool sounds if you take some time to tweak all the knobs, and switches.  And it really does sound a lot different after about 30 mins of playing.  This is something that I haven't noticed as much with my other amps.
15  Ceriatone / Overtone / Re: fizzy edge on: October 13, 2008, 07:17:35 PM
Here's what I have discovered.

By experimenting with various length guitar cables in the effects loop(no Klienu...whatever) you can tune out a lot of the "buzz" or "fizz" as you call it.  The longer the cable the "tighter" the sound.  What you're doing, if I understand this correctly, is changing the over all capacitance of the pre-amp.  Here's the kicker.  This really fucks up the clean tone.  It becomes very dark, and in my opinion unuseable.   I have no plans to use my OTS live so I simply unplug the cable for clean.
