I built my 100 watt HRM OTS with transformers from a cannibalized 1968 Twin Reverb, including
the choke. The amp had been in a fire, but the iron was fine. No burn-in needed!
They sound great.
For output tubes, I'm using the original output tubes from my 1964 Black Face Twin Reverb-
they are GE 7581As, and they sound great in the OTS - better than they did in the Twin!

I find the HRM the most touch sensitive, in fact the most sensitive amp I've owned.
As marin pointed out in some of his vids, the OTS is what many folks are looking for:
great OD tone, OD and PAB on all the time.
The HRM was designed, from its inception, to be a more versatile amp.
It is not only for flat-out OD-it has many variations available, all the way from very clean,
to a little edge, to heavy sustain lead tones.
I finished my build mid-November 2010, and now, end of February 2011, I feel
it's getting well broken in, and I'm starting to understand how to control it-setting the
level controls, and how the tone circuits work.
I think it is a great amp- a great design, and Nik's take on it really works.
As you may read on TAG, "the non-HRM models are easier to play",
and that's from one of the Dumble gurus.
The effort you have to put in to control the HRMs is worth it though.
An incredible piece of equipment I think.

Only the HRM models have the second tone stack. The HRM OD tone stack is adjusted with a set
of internal trimmers. As the post above says, the HRM tone stack provides tonal control of the OD
sound, and was added to provide tonal control of the PAB sound. AS poster said, PAB disconnects most
of the regular tone stack, providing a gain and midrange boost.
A "regular" OTS does not have the HRM internal tone stack.
The tone controls do not "add" gain. They are of the passive type, based on Fender style tone controls.

By the way, keep asking questions. It is a complex amp, and other users input is very helpful.

Remember also that the clean and OD sections are not separate. They cascade into each other.
Therefore, the tone on your clean section affects the OD tone.
You don't say if your model is an HRM, which adds a tone stack in the OD section.
Keep working at it. It took me a while to start getting OD sounds I was happy with.
Extreme settings don't seem to work out well with the OTS amps.
They also seem very sensitive-minor adjustments in control settings produce
big tonal and feel changes.
Shoot for a clean tone you are happy with, and then work on the OD. Start low,
small adjustments.

The main thing to remember is don't set the trim control on the back panel too high. About 10 o'clock,
with the tip of the knob just over the E in OPERATE on the standby switch, seems a good place to start.
That OD gives you a good lead sound, not too dirty. The real sustain comes in with OD and PAB switched in.
Takes some getting used to. It's worth the work.

Definitely install and wire tube sockets, and install power supply
boards and relay boards before installing hardware.
Very tight clearances.
Mine fired right up though, no smoke, no flame so far.
Now I'm learning my way around it-complex beast.

I have built two of these cabs, from these plans, and they were not difficult projects.
About 4-5 hrs ready to finish.
I have JBL K120s in them and they are great.
You get so much out the speaker. A lot of sound you didn't
even know was there.
Very efficient cabs.
