Title: My little Prinzetone research...
Post by: mcinku on June 02, 2010, 11:24:33 AM
I think this could be useful for anybody interested in this amp...

...this amp is based on non-verb BFPR (aa964) amp but in fact Prinzetone is not just a clone of this amp.
Nik changed tone stack and he used smaller V1a grid stopper and he increased V1 plate resistors (more gain). He also changed the vibro part a little bit, he added NFB pot and bias pot. Tone stack is now closer to Dumble Bluesmaster tonestack... it has more mids and different low end compared to standard BF Fender tone stack. (check the tonestack jpg)

I was so intrigued by all this changes that I already ordered my kit.... I plan on using bigger trannies to accommodate 6L6 power tubes for more clean headroom. It's already in the mail... can't wait to get it.  ;D

Here's the schematics and the freq. curve of the tonestack.  ;)

Thanks, very insightful.

Maybe this version will take to a 12" speaker better than the originals were. As I read on tdpri that many reverted back to 10s after they tried on 12s.

I use 10" with my Champ and it sounds fine but every time I use 12" cab it sounds even better. I like to have a huge low end but it has to be tight... so far I didn't get that from any 10" speaker I tried. Maybe if I would use 2 or even 4 but I don't like big cabs... that's not practical for me.

I hope he doesn't mind   ???

Just ordered one to my little corner of the world. Chassis kit only, will build it exactly as it comes to start with. Don't quite know what I'll pair it with yet. Probably the most I've spent on something I haven't heard, but from reading the info here about Nik and listening to the Champ Ultra + others... I'm confident it's going to be absolutely fantastic, and a great small gig / rehearsal amp.

I used to have a Laney VC 30 2x12. Too heavy to drag around everywhere (nearly 30kgs, a 4x10 deville is lighter), and too loud to crank at home without cracking the walls. Will be my first amp build so all good fun :)

After my reserch I just placed an order as well.... obviously I don't know how this amp is going to sound but I have a gut feeling this is  going to be an awesome sounding amp.

..anyway we'll know soon I guess.

Other than the trannies and tubes, would you have to do anything else?  I'm amp naive and trying to learn.

For now I'm not changing anything else. I'll see later on if changing something would be a good move.

Hmm.  Let me know how it goes.  I'm gonna put one of these together in the next month or so.

Sure thing, I will report just as soon as I'm done with my build.

Looks like mine's been detained so will probably arrive Monday. Had hopes for the weekend since I have Monday off, could spend the long weekend sorting it. Oh well.

Arrived today, hopefully assembled tomorrow :)

I had some issues with customs office... >:(
...but now everything is cleared and my package is coming tomorrow.

I will redo the faceplate first.... cause I want to build a combo and the faceplate is designed for a head cab.
So it will take some time before I start building.

Anyway... record some clips if you can.
 ;)

Noticed there's one up today under sound clips on the ceriatone website. Sounds nice, but I'll record a bit more of the amps variety. Yeah I'm in the same boat with the faceplate. Might build a small head box instead....

Off to get me a better soldering iron (got a cheap and nasty one atm but it does the job) and some other bits and bobs. Will probably start tonight. I didn't realize the eyelet board was going to be completely wired up so this is about 100x easier than I was first anticipating. It's a fantastic job, well packed, good components, nice footswitch. I'm pretty impressed.

There was a sticker on the box with the transformers in it that customs had opened the box - must have looked interesting :)

Got it assembled today, no large fires or things going bang (yet). Undoubtedly my fault it has a loud hum, and the tremolo just makes a clicking sound when I plug it in. It's the middle of the night so couldn't really crank it up, but it sounds pretty nice regardless of my bad wiring :) might get someone who actually knows what they're doing to have a look :) once I've sorted the niggles I'll post something up.

My sucky build has been posted :)

So how do you feel about your Prinzetones? I'm playing a Dizzy 30 now and love it but I miss the Fender cleans.

I would probably not build it myself, so what do you think Nik would say if I wanted him to make the master volume a post phase-inverter master volume and put Power Scaling in it?

And by the way, what kind of combo chassis would do? Would any of these be fine? http://www.tube-town.net/ttstore/index.php/cat/c337_TTC-Combos.html

Don't know if any of those would be OK,.... I'm building something from scratch.

I'm after 1x12" combo but as small as it can be.
I made a new faceplate for my amp. It's 3cm wider as the chassis (1,5cm on each side). My cab is going to be small but a little deeper with slightly slanted baffle.

Here you have some plans I made, you could send these to tubetown and perhaps they could build you one...
