might be a long shot, but what would the tonal differences be with these two amps? i already have a 100 watt super bass, but that's different from a super lead..it has smoother sound, with more lower mids.

doesn't matter how loud etc, just curious about the tone.

I just put together a 1987 Plexi from Ceriatone.  Stock, it was too bright for my taste.  I started making the front end more like the Superbass and found a nice compromise between the 2.  So I would describe the 1987 as just a really bright version of the Superbass, they both have a real similar essence in tone, just a different frequence response.

To be honest, with the super leads I've used, the brightness tends to go away when it's cranked up (quite loud though).

Sorry, one more question;

Do the lead amps have a good amount of headroom? it seems my super bass lacks headroom a great deal...or maybe it's my hearing that's screwed up Undecided

I recently biased it as well (set it to about 35 mA), which should give me plenty of headroom.

although...I do have the channels bridged and the EQ dimed (excluding presence), but the volumes around 1 or 2.

Hi,

  The Super Lead vs the 1959, I dont think direct comparison is that valid. It's just not the same.

  The Super Lead has a different type of mojo. It's not overly bright, and it does have a bit of compression/sagging going.

  In any case, easy mods for the brightness issue.

  It's almost a quandary - consider this:

  Most people who can afford good tube amps could be in their young (hey!) 30s or 40s. And, probably, with many years of pounding music and other assorted vices.
  It is almost a given that this group would like a bit of bright. And the brightness could offend ones with lesser or no impairment to hearing.

  Could be far fetched but here I have an old timer who does amps as well. And often times, his amps are way bright even for me (I test amps on daily basis).

  So, in a way, it can be viewed as a "target market" type of thing? Heh...

Note to self: Bright switch selector in the "coffee maker" Plexi amp (Plexi with all sorts of mods so I dont have to drill plates and chassis anymore!)

the 50w lead (1987) and 100w super lead (1959) are basically the same amp, one being ca 50w the other ca 120w. the bigger amp will sound cleaner and have more punch and bass. and a quicker attack. the 50w will be a bit more compressed.

from 1967 to 69 the lead circuits were changed from a bass/jtm type amp with a bright cap to split cathode, v2 .68uf bypass cap. the means that the the lead amps got brighter and dirtier. the later lead circuit wont have as much clean headroom as a superbass. your superbass isnt working if it lacks headroom
