Title: Sozo cap install
Post by: stratolounger on January 27, 2010, 05:26:47 PM
I recently built the Plexi50 lead and installed Sozo vintage caps. There is an orientation regarding the direction of the caps as regards the black band. I installed them with the black band facing the plate current side and not the tone circuit side. I have read recently that this is incorrect. Anyone done the same thing?

The "correct" orientation is toward the ground/low impedance side of the circuit.  In your case you would want to have the black band facing the pots/front panel, not the preamp tubes/back panel.
With that said, I have never been able to hear a difference.  If there are any concerns for recording, long term stability, aid to electron flow, etc. etc. I could not speak to that.  I have always installed them in the "correct" manner, though I am not completely convinced of the importance.
Hope That helps

The amp sounds very good right now. Even on the Sozo website there is some ambiguity. Maybe I'll reverse them. Then again...

Did you notice a huge differnce ni sound? feel? dynamics? when you changed the caps?

Keeping the foil connected to the low voltage side helps reduce noise.  This is the case with ALL caps.  The nicer companies mark the side, otherwise you have to test each one to find the foil side.

Remember, with Sozo, they really need to burn in some, then they lose their "out of the box" harshness.
