Title: Plexi50 1987 Lead With PPIMV or Hotplate Post by: Young0828 on September 22, 2009, 02:39:49 AM Hi
Is anybody have experiance the sound difference by using PPIMV or a Hotplate in Plexi50 1987 Lead? After read some articles, I think the difference will be power tube saturation. Will power tube saturation make Plexi50 1987 Lead sound better? Thanks Title: Re: Plexi50 1987 Lead With PPIMV or Hotplate Post by: wyatt on September 22, 2009, 07:48:04 AM Honestly, it's all compromise.
Yes an attenuator will allow more power tube saturation but every attenuator out there alters the tone in it's own way. A PPIMV allows the PI to get working which many people feel is a lot of the crunch to a hot power amp. Those classic tracks on albums are everything -- the preamp sizzling, the power amp crunch and lots of distortion from those old Greenback speakers. Not to mention the isolation booths and tones of EQ tweaking at mixdown. *All* of that is the quintessential rock tone you hear on so many classic albums. But we can't all have that. I can't remember a time I could have cranked a 1987 (let alone a 1959) at a gig, it's why I don't own anything that big anymore. So, we compromise.... Recording is much easier, a good soundproof studio. And outdoor gigs are pretty easy to crank at as well, you lose so much sound because it's not being bounce back by anything that you have to crank up. thanks for your experiance. that help a lot. I would like to try one Plexi 50 with PPIMV first Title: Re: Plexi50 1987 Lead With PPIMV or Hotplate Post by: alwalt on September 22, 2009, 04:51:52 PM If you do not like the MV, just bypass it and try the attenuator...
I never liked the way MV works on my DC30, but as Wyatt says there is always something to compromise... Mine is a 15/30 watter and I can barely crank it! I would like to try one Plexi 50 with PPIMV first Well, its the more affordable option and a good MV design will let you dime it or switch it out of the circuit. And you can always use an attenuator with it. Most attenuators only work well for the first 2 clicks (-4dB and -8dB normally), the THD ones sound way better than the Marshall one (can re-add the bass and top) For live, Probably best to use VVR+PPIMV a little, + THD hotplate on -4dB or -8dB For studio, Iso cab it Title: Re: Plexi50 1987 Lead With PPIMV or Hotplate Post by: Frankajoerg on March 01, 2012, 09:02:16 PM If you do not like the MV, just bypass it and try the attenuator... Hi I'm gonna buy the 1986 plexi50 bass head and I'm just a bit unsure of wether or not I should go for the PPIMV or not.. If I choose it and I find out that I want to use a HO's attenuator instead, do I just put the MV to max and it would be like it wasn't there/bypassed? Also if I go for the MV, will one of the four input channels be sacrificed for the MV knob, or will the knob be placed on the backside of the amp? Thanks! I'm a noob at these things so it's most likely a really silly question:) |
