Title: Plexi50 1986 bass
Post by: Roffe on September 10, 2012, 03:50:46 PM
Hi there I just got a ultimate attenuator for my plexi 50. I cranked both channels, and the ht fuse blew. I` m guessing it needs new power amp tubes. Anyway: I had a gig with my band the next day, so I used a 1 amp fuse from my deluxe reverb and managed to do the gig. Now I need new fuses, and I`m planning to buy a few. I see on the marshallamps page that you can buy 32mm and 20mm fusees. What is the correct size for ht and mains fuses. The amp is a 230v amp.
Thanks,
Roffe

I can't answer definitely, I don't own a Ceraitone Plexi...the 32mm is the traditional 1-1/4" fuses that were standard for decades and decades. Most smaller amp makers still use 1-1/4" fuse holders, repros of old Fender and Marshall holders; where as the modern large-scale operations are moving to smaller fuses that can use PCB-mounted fuse holders. But it can be confusing...Fender uses a 32mm fuse holder for it's North American DRRI, but the export now gets a 20mm fuse holder.

The visual/physical difference between the two is one that you will never confuse once you see both, the 20mm is signficantly smaller, not just in length but in diameter as well. But it's easy to measure the length and know for sure.

So, my answer is totally useless except to say...use a ruler.

Based on the layout and chassis pictures I have seen, you most likely need the longer style fuse.  But just why did the fuse blow in the first place?  By using the higher wattage fuse from the DR, you risk damage to the amp.  I would explore that avenue unless you know why it went in the first place.
