Title: Finally finished my headshell -pics attached.
Post by: hywelg on August 30, 2010, 05:22:20 PM
Its taken me a while, mostly due to trying to find different colours of tolex that would sit together happily. Black/purple levant, blue elephant grain and black is what I used in the end.

Still got to sort out the lighting inside the shell to illuminate the logo as the diffuse white LED's are not giving off enough light when supplied with 3.4v (I rectified the unused 0-5v valve rectifier heater tap on the PT) I either need more voltage or different LED's. The transformer sits behind the logo obscuring half of it which is a shame. It wasn't an option to move it though.

The faceplate really needs remaking as the amp now has powerscaling (the knob thats in the standby hole and a PPIMV in the indicator hole )

It has a dual colour LED power indicator Red for standby and blue for ON.

Now the only thing you need to change is the faceplate :) BTW who made you the logo? :D

Yeah I wish I had a dark blue faceplate with gold writing, but I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Here's another shot with a different colour logo and the LED's installed and on.  I made the logo from glass. I made a few in different colours and this one I ground the back to disperse the light better.

Wow!
I must say, that is about the classiest logo I have ever seen. Maybe you should talk to Nik.....??
Are you able to produce these logos in large numbers? Are they running from 6 volts or from the wall voltage?  I am just thinking, Nik ships all over the world, it would probably be best if it ran on 6.3 volts.
But maybe I am putting the cart in front of the horse  ;)
Best

hired hand, yes I can produce these in numbers (my day job is working with glass), but I wanted to test out the lighting first. I prefer the look of the yellow/red logo, where you can see straight through the glass to the amp innerds, but on the plexi the transformer got in  the way so I had to obscure the view.

The lighting is problematic at the moment and I haven't had much time to perfect it. I have 3.4volts DC from the 0-5v rectifier filament tap on the transformer. Unfortunately this was not enough to drive the 10mm diffused LEDs I had, so currently I have three clear 10mm high brightness LED's mounted individually on the underside of the shell and positioned to illuminate all of the logo, they have to be spaced out since the transformer casts a shadow otherwise. These are quite a shallow beam angle hence the need for 3, I need some wide angle, with a very bright light so that I can get away with only one.  It works but its not a perfect solution.

Are you thinking about making a faceplate yourself? You could make one from glass or something :)

No glass would be a really bad idea for a faceplate, too easy to crack with all the holes in it.

Yep you are right. But if you are so good with glass you could probably make a faceplate with ease :)

Its not the making that would be the problem, its that the holes are natural stress raisers and when bolted on tight, what with temp changes, the glass would definitely crack.

Just spray paint the "stock" faceplate to black and you are set lol :D
