Title: 1987 Plexi Clone with switchable PPIMV schematic?? Post by: brett on December 06, 2009, 05:52:54 PM Hi,
I am now a little nervous about installing a PPIMV in my Plexi clone. I have not heard anything really negative but some say the amp gets raspy and others have recently indicated that one makes a compromise... What does this mean exactly? Does it distort correctly or not? Does it suck tone or does it have a problem like the 'interupt fx-loop mod' which needs buffering? I currently use a TAD Tonebone set with el84 and a Boss SD1 pedal - this increases the darkness of the Plexi tone but at least it increases the natural gain at a lower volume. I have gotten used to it, but I think what I need is a good distorted glass-like Plexi sound from el34's via the PPIMV. This is what I am hoping it does. Does anyone have a schematic where I can see how to use a toggle switch for switching circuits between PPIMV and normal? Cheers Brett Title: Re: 1987 Plexi Clone with switchable PPIMV schematic?? Post by: wyatt on December 10, 2009, 03:48:19 AM If you use the Master Volume, you loss power tube OD, part of that 1987 sound (as are greenback speakers distorting). So, yes, there will always be a change. The benefit of the PPIMV is you at least get the PI tube OD and not just the preamp tubes.
Anything...voltage regulation, attenuators, MV will change the tone some. The best solution is to size the amp for the venue, but that's not always an option. Post by: Franc on December 13, 2009, 05:12:16 PM It's not clear exaclty which type of PPIMV you will be installing, but if you do it right, setting it to '10' will make it virtually out of the circuit, so why bother with trying to make it switchable (which I think is not a good idea, if possible at all - you would need relays).

Post by: fpaul on December 17, 2009, 11:55:13 PM I added one a couple weeks ago, turn it all the way up and sounds the same as before I installed it. Turned down low it does affect the tone but still nice to have the option. Turned up to about 6 and above with the volume dimed it still sounds great without knocking the walls down, still loud though. I say go for it, easy to reverse if you don't like it.
