Title: What pedals are you guys using with your Overtones?
Post by: bigwebb83 on August 16, 2011, 07:32:33 PM
Right now I'm without my amp because I sold my two Fenders and wont have a speaker to play through until my two rock cab arrives tomorrow.  So I'm filling the void by thinking about it/talking about it.  So what pedals are you guys running with your Overtone Specials?  Both in the clean channel and OD channels?  what kinds of sounds are you getting??  Clips are always nice too.

Hey Daniel

To answer your question currently have a boss GT-10 that is setup for only delay and reverb and is in the loop of my C-lator. It has a looper on it which I use quite often as well. I do have a envelope filter, a zendrive and low and behold a boss metal zone ( haha ) all of which I barely use. I can cop most the tones I desire with just the amp with rev and delay. But I also have an ABY now and like to play one/either of my OTS's along with my 2550 ala Joe bonamassa/Eric Johnson tone. With this setup i can go from crystal cleans( OTS ) to Marshall roar ( 2550 ) and everything in between.

Before I got my OTS FM50 I had a Peavey JSX which was a decent amp but not in same realm ( Boutique ). When I got the OTS there was a learning curve for me, because it just plays different. Hard to explain but you will probably see what I mean.

Anyways, i suggest you do some bonding with the amp alone before worrying about what pedals to use. I dont know how much different #124 ( the amp you have )clone is from #102 or HRM MK2 w/el-34s ( my OTS's ) but the cleans should be very nice platform for pedals if needed. I personally enjoy the OD I get out of my amps than any pedal I have ever tried.

Also what tubes are currently in your amp?

Todd

In the loop with the C-Lator I run a holy grail reverb. Up front I run through a swollen pickle, a BYOC esv fuzz, a fulltone fulldrive 2, a TS-9, a boosta grande, and sometimes a GE-7

I use a GE-7, TS 808, OCD, a Zendrive, a Maxon Compressor, a Holier Grail, and a DD-20 (yes, I need them all, right now anyway) through my Blues Jr, but I planned on putting everything through the C-lator once I put the trannies in and fire up the amp.  How come you are putting them in front instead of the loop?  I wanted to buffer all of it, with it not sound right through the loop.

In the loop of a Clator is a TC 2290 and in the loop of the 2290 is a BYOC Reverb Pedal

In front is a

Dan Armtrong Orange Squeeze Clone > Xotic BB Preamp > sometimes a Big Muff Clone > BYOC Envelope Filter > Univibe Clone>Amp

I need to get a Wah real bad.

Thanks, but I just haven't got around to either bulding one or replace my Fulltone Clyde.

Generally speaking, any time based effects (reverb, delay, chorus, etc) will sound better in the loop as they are effecting the sound coming out of the preamp and entering the PI and Power section, where as wahs, od pedals, fuzz boxes, and distortion pedals, etc sound better on the front end, as they will sound better not going through the tone stack and/or OD section of the amp itself.

How do you like the Strymon Lex Rotary? I really like the looks of their effects.

Just got my hands on an analogman king of tone.  Was a little disappointed at first but then I busted open the F@ckin manual and reallized there are internal trims for treble control.  Once I got these dialed in, the pedal really came alive.  The first channel is awesome for a boost and the second channel really kicks the overdrive to a beautiful level.  It can get very good mayer tones (probably because it's based off of the bluesbreaker).  I think the only thing I'm lacking is a compressor.  Time to head over to the emporium on TGP.

Love it. Only used the Boss RT-20 for Leslie sounds before this, but the Lex sounds much better. I would like to compare it to a real Leslie one day....

With my Ceriatone/Marsh 50wOTS In front: Area 51 Wah, Keith Hilton low profile active volume pedal.  In the loop: TC electronics Nova system pedal.  The tremolo setting in that pedal is the worst sounding trem I have ever heard.  It works okay within the band mix, but by itself it sounds like...I won't say it!.

With my Ceriatone 50w HRM, the same except the TC unit goes in and out of a Ceriatone C-lator, which in turn goes in and out of the amp's fx loop.   I don't do the long cable trick for the C-Lator.

I am using a Motion Sound SR-112 with my OTS 50W and it sounds great. I've tried a number of Leslie type pedals but nothing like the real deal. Happy playing, Bert

Lovepedal Burning E6, Zendrive and Lovepedal AMP11 in front of my OTS 50W, Suhr Mini Mix with Boss RV and Boss Delay in loop, into Mesa cab with EV speaker and Motion Sound SR-112 Leslie with Weber JBL clone.

what is the long cable trick?

Actually Long cables is not what your supposed to use. You should b using RG-400 high'er pF (braided conductor) cables. They're used to Roll off highs when using a D-lator and huge bright cap on the Master Vol

artec APW power wah -> biyang X-drive-> washburn stack in a box (like a ts9 only bigger sounding)->hartman 8va->biyang chorus (about to be replaced with tech21 rotochoir) .... in the loop  biyang analog delay and reverb

the biyang stuff is really excellent and inexpensive....... the x-drive is the only ts-9 style pedal where you can easily swap chips...i have mine set up with the texas chip (cant recall the number) mainly as a boost with sparkle.

the washburn stack in a box  is somewhere between a TS-9 and a rat pedal. it contans TWO JRC chips and is excellent for rock based stuff...(google guitar player magazines article on this pedal... its one which never got the attention it deserved.)

One night I had to play without my pedals - straight into the amp.
I loved it!  Had a Dr. Z Maz Jr at the time.  I decided to get rid of all my OD pedals.
(Xotic RC, AC and BB - great pedals) and since the Z didn't have enough gain, started searching for a different amp.  Thats how I came upon the D-style.

For efx, I do the Larry Carlton thing - mic the amp -> efx -> another amp for the return.
My guitar goes straight to the amp.  Even as few as 3 or 4 true bypass pedals suck a lot of tone and responsiveness.  Even when they're not on - just in the chain.
When I plugged straight in - the guitar really 'came alive'.  When I need to tune, I pull the cable out of the amp and plug into the tuner.  Some efx, like wah, pretty much HAVE to be in the chain, but the less, the better.   Its not even the 'tone' that gets sucked out so much as the 'life'.

I noticed a couple of simple riffs I play that never sounded right until I ditched the pedals.
Now, all the nuances REALLY come through and inspire my playing in a way the OD pedals never could.

Currently on my board is a Fulltone Deluxe Clyde wah, isp Decimator and a TC Tuner through the front end.
Then I have either and Eventide Time Factor or a TC G Major 2 out to a Glaswerks Matchbox wired up with RG-400 coax.
The rest of the cable is Mogami. This is all fed out to either a Glaswerks 2x12 loaded with EVL's or a Hermidia 2x12 front ported cab loaded with
vintage G12-65's.

Kicked all my drives off my board (KOT, TIM, modded DS-1, RC booster).  Kept the following chain:

Turbo Tuner (best tuner) --> Clean Boost for buffering --> Teese RMC-3 wah --> Java Boost (Germanium treble booster.  Get one.  With the Bluesmaster 100w, it's golden) --> Captain Coconut 2 --> Digitech Hardwire DL-8 --> amp.  The vibe unit on the Captain Coconut and the delay are run through the C-lator.  With the fuzz on the CC and the Java boost, I can cover almost any sound I need.  The great thing about the latter is that it has a toggle switch to set the pedal for full boost, treble boost, or mid boost.  Pretty rad.
