Title: What are the transformers and a cap question. Post by: 52ftbuddha on March 26, 2008, 01:36:01 AM I should preface with I hope I am not being impolite in these questions. I am interested in ordering one of these and wanted to know what the transformers are that Nik uses. I also wanted to know if it is possible to have filter caps that do not have the ceriatone branding?

Not much different from an American boutique builder relying on Hammand and Heyboer to wind something "in the ballpark." As to the caps, I believe Nik is open to part substitutions as long as you are willing to foot the bill, i swear he used to mention he'll use Mallory 150 coupling caps and other things on request, but can't find it on his site anymore. Are you really scared someone will pull the chassis and call your buff after you smack a Dumble repro faceplate on it? ;D Spraque Atoms have skyrocketed in price lately, so either it will cost you or you'll have to go to F&T or something. Either way, any amp tech can switch the stock ones out in a matter of minutes. Actually, I need to find out what voltages the power tranny and choke are setup for because I'm probably going to order the kit sans transformers to save on shipping. I kinda figure anything around Super Reverb size should do, but want to make sure my plate voltage is in the right range. maybe use Allen Amp's Super Reverb sized trannies? Post by: 52ftbuddha on March 26, 2008, 06:28:39 PM I suspect you are right on the money with transformer manufacturer. As to the caps I just like some of the original branding. I would not wish to desolder and replace the parts once assembled. I think the name on the faceplate is perfect, and will stay that way. I hope NIK is justifiably proud of this effort, I would be glad to play out with an amp with Ceriatone on it. I think the Orange holy grail caps are just plain ugly and do not go with one of the cleanest looking ckt's I have ever seen. The solder joints alone are worth a photo on the site.
