Title: Tube FX-Loop AKA D*mblelator
Post by: erwin_ve on December 28, 2008, 02:15:54 PM
Since may 08 I am the happy owner of a Ceriatone Ots. After some serious modding of this amp I had one big desire; a tube fx-loop aka d*mblelator.

1 1/2 month ago I tried one of a ampgarageboard-member who's living in the Netherlands. It was such a nice experience, the d-lator added nice harmonics, compression and makes the od sound real sweet.

So I decided to build one myself. Sourcing parts was time consuming.
I finished it at Christmas eve and gigged it this weekend. It's really nice, also without effects! Tomorrow the lettering is done.
Here some building pics:

Nice job, have you used a 12ax7 or other less gainy valve?.

I half wish I had held off doing my Klein based rack mount job. I rather like the idea of a tube based effects loop. Would appreciate your comparison with the Kleinulator if at all possible.

Any chance of a layout drawing?

Thnx! I used a 12ax7, with the right voltages there's plenty of headroom.

Unfortunatly I desoldered my kleinulator to use some parts of it in this build :P
I think it's not fair to compare it because I made a Kleinulator early public domain version and that's a bit different from the build I've seen lately.

For a layout of a d-lator you can visit ampgarage; a member(Funk) made a tutorial. I'm thankful for that otherwise I didn't start the build.

The only difference is the power supply which is using a bridge rectifier instead of a voltage doubler. I'll attach a schematic of that.

Nice!

How much did the whole build cost?
I need a Dumbleator, too  ;D

Just read that thread on ampgarage http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3944&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0 (http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=3944&postdays=0&postorder=asc&start=0)

I reckon my electronics knowledge is inadequate to try building my own!! You had to do quite a bit of parts swapping to get the right voltages in the right places.

You better look at: http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4084&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight= (http://ampgarage.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=4084&start=0&postdays=0&postorder=asc&highlight=)
The EU power design isn't mine; it's done by a member of ampgarage(Airniles).
Swapping isn't the right method, you have to calculate this; Ohm's law is your friend. To recover triode=345v; to cathode triode= 268v

Priceless :chairdance: :D
Somewhere between €150- €200. Don't know exactly, had some parts in stock.
The empty rack was the most expensive part, then the tranny.

Sounds great  ;D

Maybe I'll try to build one :)

hi Erwin
looks great
my Kleinulator is up and running again. I'll come by one of these days so we can compare.
Cheers
Steven

Hi Guys
I need to wait on a couple of new FET's. Mine blew. I had the unit repaired but not with the same parts. Mike was kind enough to offer to send me a few so I'll put those in and then I'll meet with Erwin for an A/B.
