Title: straight into the amp sounds different from through pedalboard. Post by: Steven_nl on March 23, 2009, 11:01:16 AM I have a pedalboard with in the right order:
Korg Pitchblack tuner Cry Baby 535Q EMMA discumbobulator Keeley TS9 Wampler Ecstacy Drive I use GeorgeL patch cables I use a Pedal Snake cable for the guitar signal from the board to the amp, the 9V adapter power, Midi and a leslie on/off switch. As expected there's a difference in sound when I run my guitar directly into amp from the sound when I use my board. Hard to describe the difference. It seems there's a bit more dynamics in the (OD) sound and the character of the guitar is a bit more detailed. With the pedal board the sound is a bit less direct and maybe a bit less harsh. Probably a high cut. What could I do to optimize my board setup? Second question. I use a fairly high grade adapter to power the effects on the board and to power the Kleinulator. This seems to prduce a nasty hum. Strangely enough I think this wasn't the case before. I have my PC running in the same room as my amp. Could it be a net problem? RFI/EMI? How do you guys handle this? cheers Steven 1. question "What could I do to optimize my board setup?" Try to plugin to your effects without your 'Cry Baby 535Q'. Wahs are notoriously known for loading your sound down, due to low input impedance of these units. If your sound i brighter without the wah. You can a) Install a true bypass switch in your wah pedal OR b) use a line driving pedal in front of the wah. This could be any boss pedal. And since you don't have a compressor on your pedal board, yet, you could buy any boss compresser (the CS3 is nice) and 'high cut of tone' problem should be eliminated, wheater you use the Boss compressor (or similar) in 'on' or 'off' mode. 2. Hum question I assume that you use the Kleinulator in the Overtone effects loop. And your pedals in front the the amp (instrument) input. Use a seperate supply for your Kleinulator. If this doesn't solve the humming, you probably have a ground loop on your pedal board. Use a 9v chord form your psu, without ground connetion. You can buy one in every music store. My T-REX junior supply has one included from the get go. A furmann should not be necessary. Title: Re: straight into the amp sounds different from through pedalboard. I've had a true bypass wah suck some pretty decent tone before. On my old amp, I actually liked it for a while because it smoothed out my shitty tone! :)

Post by: Mitch on April 01, 2009, 03:16:05 AM I had the same issues with my OTS- keep your cables as short as possible- avoid long runs in the loop for the Kleinulator (if you have one). Loading from capacitance in your cables is an issue with the OTS- it's very sensitive to this- you may also try a buffer/line driver of some kind (Barge Concepts make some pretty good ones) - probably with it first in your effects chain - that may solve the issue.
With the hum issue- ensure it's a regulated 9v adaptor- often voltages will drop causing bad hum if you power a lot of pedals as you do- you'll also need it to produce a minimum of around 1.5 amps to power all your stuff- I highly recommend the Powerstation by GigRig- that'll power half the street as well if you need it! ;D |
