Title: Snap, Crackle & Pop from my OTS??? Post by: Mitch on June 20, 2008, 03:16:20 PM My OTS has recently started making low level 'frying & popping' noises- I've changed all the tubes- twice... and it still comes back- usually after it's been on for a while... anyone any clues as to what it might be?
Interesting observation on hooking my OTS up in stereo using a Ceriatone 18watt essentially as a power amplifier feeding from the split stereo out from rack efx into a pair of Celestion Golds in a Custom Cab Company speaker cab. The clean tones are much 'duller' for want of a better word from the OTS power amp than the 18watt, which is being driven from the OTS pre-amp after all... I wonder what it is with the OTS power amp that essentially has a much duller EQ? Or do I just need to bite the bullet and get a Kleinulator? ??? ;D I'd really appreciate any help guys - especially with the popping & crackling issues, before I bother Nik! Tubes(you replaced them so ou of the question). Bad carbon film resistors can also make the crack, snap and popping sound. Title: Re: Snap, Crackle & Pop from my OTS??? Turned out it was a bad battery (i use EMG's)

I had a Fender 65 reverb that did that from day one and only after it got hot. I took it to two very good amp techs and neither found it. Then one day, by chance, I found out it was simply the speaker jack in the back of the amp. It wasn't making really secure contact and when the amp heated up it expanded and exasperated the problem and it would show out on occassion when it felt like it. It would pop and crack every so often it would lose the signal for a brief second and then go on like nothing was wrong.
Now I am a techno dummy so that is about as far as I can explain it. Sometimes things are really simple. Title: Re: Snap, Crackle & Pop from my OTS??? Post by: ic-racer on June 21, 2008, 12:17:54 AM The effects send jack is a 'switched' jack and when there is no plug in it, the whole signal needs to go through the two little contacts in the jack. I know the Switchcraft jacks have the mechanism right out in the open so you can try to clean it. Not sure about the ones on the overtone. When this does not make good contact it makes a loud crackling.

An usual “sausage frying and crackling” noise is a result of a bad preamp valves, especially first tube. Louder crackling and popping noise can be associated with bed soldering connections on the preamp tube sockets. Overtoe is well build amp, especially older ones (serial production can affect quality unfortunately). If you moded an amp check the connections again and all capacitors you’ve changed. Post by: Mitch on June 21, 2008, 08:49:00 PM Many thanks Pickmaster - you're right, I have made a few minor mods- the snubber caps I modded may be the problem- my soldering is usually pretty good, but I shall double check. The valves are fine- changed them all twice! By the way I played my first gig with the cab last night - those mic's & the cab are absolutely amazing - my search for THE 'tone' is over! приветствия и мое искреннее Спасибо!!! ;D ;D ;D
