Hey everyone,

I'm about to build a head cab for my OTS and I was wondering if the inside of the top should have some shielding to shield the electronics. If it does, what material?
Anything else of the sort that I should know for head cab building?

Usually it’s a copper foil. Aluminium would do as well.
But in my case it introduced a hum, so I removed it.
Works perfectly without any shielding.

This is interesting...I left out the shielding in a 1987 head and it caused screeching sounds when i cranked the amp. I couldn't get the amp into OD without getting awful noises out of the amp. I originally thought it was bad preamp tubes but Nik suggested the shielding and completely fixed the problem. i guess every amp is different. 

If it makes good contact, you close the cage and it should always be an improvement.

If it causes hum that means something is wrong :).

Shielding the cabinet is not nessasary. If you paly a singlecoil guitar, its probably better to use the schielding there instead  :)

+1 i cant see how it would cause a problem. the entire chassis is aluminum and is grounded to sheild the "guts" of the amp. Adding the small peice on the cab is just like putting a lid on it to keep more unwanted noise out.

The only way it could cause a problem is if one of your components was touching the sheilding and sending a signal to ground that shouldnt go there.


If that happens just cover the sheilding with electrical tape except for the aluminum that makes contact with the chassis. I do this on my guitars that i sheild
