Title: Rock/Pop/Alternative music -> Overtone ?
Post by: Sander on January 12, 2010, 07:34:04 PM
Hi Guys,

I bet you get these kind of questions ALL THE TIME, but I would really like to know what you guys think.

I'm about to buy one of your ceriatones in Holland from VERNET.

I'm really into rock/pop music. When I look for demo's on the internet of the overtone or HRM I only see Fusion player with a slight Fizzy (high gain) Tone. Though I have seen some nice sounding ones, really most of them are only fusion-ish.

I really like that warm smooth (not fizzy!) John Mayer tone. As I said, I like to play rock/pop/alternative music, but with that bluesy "semi-clean" John Mayer-esque tone. The amp has to take pedals well. I really do not like harshness or lots of highs.. Which Ceriatone would you Recommend?

The Overtone Special, HRM, or HRM Bluesmaster?

Thanks very much for any reactions..

I feel you man, Me too. I am not at all a Fusion player, although I do like to listen to some.

The Mayer tone has alot to do with his fingers, his two rocks/dumble's,and his under-wound pickups.

The Ceriatone amp can do the Two Rock. You might have to do a few mods (or get some one else to do them). The Two Rock that Mayer plays only does one thing, Big Clean sounds Reminiscent of The Dumble SSS Topology, all of the OD or Gain you hear is from pedals.

All his TW amps are essentially a modified Custom Reverb Sig.'s I have pic's of one inside and out so if you want to see it PM me. On top of the T.W.'s he plays a Steel String Singer. It is a one channel amp designed to have Humongous Cleans.

That being said what ever you get has to be a 100w amp Some people say its too much. So If you want an amp that's going to have huge cleans a 100w is 100% necessary.I have one and it is NOT overkill at all, Its perfect. It has the most usefull Master Volume on it I have ever used, different then any other amp.

    Here is my HRM Bluesmaster:

Your Bluesmaster sound awesome. Love the Lelsie clips as well.
I guess the OTS has more of that Robben Ford vibe while the bluesmaster is more a SRV type of sound.
My OTS doens't have those cleans that's for sure
GREAT clips!!

That's seriously one of the most informative Overtone clips I've seen yet; I've been wondering about this version of the amp for a while, and now I know. Thank you!

I have been debating with myself, not whether to get another OTS variant, just which, and your clips have convinced me that it should be the BM HRM and the 100watt at that. Seriously good tone and very very nice playing.

Thank you.

Thanks again. I am debating getting another BM with some huge 150w iron and some 4 6550's and instead of having overdrive I want one big super chimy clean amp with verb. Not having OD would leave 2 holes on the front panel and 2 spaces for verb controls.they could be send/return controls for the verb, and also a built in d-lator would be cool too.

Can I ask, with your amp is it possible to get a more focused overdrive tone with more gain if you need to? I actually like the transparency of your overdrive tone, and the fact that it is similar to the cleans without, seemingly, too much mid boost, but for what I do I would also want more available "attitude". Is that possible? I play mostly blues rock, kind of RobbenFord/Johnny Winter/Rory Gallagher/SRV/Hendrix etc, if you can imagine that!

I'm just not convinced that the standard OTS, or even the HRM version, will do what I want. I'm also leaning towards 50 watts, as I rarely use pristine cleans (though I might if I had them available!), and I prefer to turn the amp up to make it work properly. 100 watts is usually too much; I recently sold my beloved 60 watt Vibroking for that reason. Was that recording done with low or high volume settings?

Sorry for all the questions, but the tone in your clip is really good, and if I can get that plus what I want in the drive department, then this could be the amp for me.

What speakers are you using in that clip??

I know the G12-65 is one of the main speakers used, but has anyone tried the G12 Century Vintage with an OTS??

  I am using a G-12-65 and a EvM-12-L in a Avatar d-style ported 2x12.

You can definitely get a more open revealing OD out of the Bluesmaster.
The Clean on my amp is great though, It loves pedals too. I am going to do a clip with a few pedals like a Fuzz, Envelope filter,Wah etc.

I will make a clip showcasing the OD alone soon.

That would be great, thanks.
