Are there any drawbacks with this material (except for the weight) ?
Victor

Actually it’s better for the tone than plywood or hardwood.
It may sound funny but most expensive and tonefull audiophile cabinets are made with marble or cement. They are very heavy and rigid.

Sorry Pickmaster, but I don't agree with you at all. A 'dead' material for a guitar cabinet is a big no no in my book.

Yes, traditional hifi speaker cabinets are made from dead materials, although, recently some Hifi speakers producers, like e.g. 'Harbeth', have discovered the beauty of resonating guitar cabinets, and make their Hifi Speaker cabinets accordingly.

A classic guitar cabinet (top, bottom and sides) is made from pine wood with plywood front and back baffle. This the recipe for all classic fender cabinets (tweed and blackface) - and thats what Dumble used for his cabinets as well.

My best sounding guitar cabinet is made from Pine with 4mm front baffle and 2 x 12G65. It resonates like a giant acoustic guitar!!

Victor, if like the sound of your new cab, then thats just fine. If you want to improve the cab - don't dispair... just change the front baffle wood from particle board to birch plywood. 4-6 mm will work fine with your speaker unit. A heavier speaker like a EV12L needs a 8-10mm.

Probably in your book Grin, but not in acoustic science books and please don’t tell me that you don’t give a toss about science.
1x12 cabinet’s baffle (and rear plate if it’s a closed back) has to be as rigid and heavy as practically possible. Otherwise you will get loads of additional parasitic vibrations, phase cancellations, changes in a response time curve – delayed attack, inertness and efficiency loss.
You maybe like 4mm baffle, but inside 2x12 cab (especially in a closed back) it will act as a third speaker (lower efficiency) moving in reverse phase damaging your tone and possibly cabinet itself if played loud.

Obviously tone is a matter of taste but I prefer to follow scientific laws as much as practically possible in acoustics and experimental facts.

Fenderman, you just love to argue, aren’t you? Huh?

And pickman loves to read science books. ;-D Seriously, focus on tone and forget what you read in hifi magazines and popular science magazines.

Yes, a 4 mm baffle works like a third speaker....well, so what. If it sounds great, it is great.

FWIW the baffle of the dumble 2x12 cab is 19 mm thick.
Since we are posting in the overtone section I thought that might be useful info.

And it’s a finger joint construction with open back (if you are talking about Robben’s vertical cab).

Hi Everybody,

I´m new here. I received my HRM two weeks ago. They finished it in 3 weeks and shipping took only another 2  days.
Here are the pics of the head and speaker cab. I hope you like it.

Victor

Hey Victor

Nice build. I've got an HRM on order and am just about to start building the head cabinet and 1x12 cabinet. Any chance of getting the plans you used for yours

Hi Geronimo,

here is what I used to build the head cab. I asked Nik for the exact dimensions. I found these plans in the forum and Nik said it is ok.
Note that the drillings (for the amp) are not mentioned in the layout.
You should better figure out yourself.

Greetings
Victor

This is not an overtone and maybe I should not post this here so I apologize if I have made a faux pas.
I just ordered an OTS and have been searching for inspiration for cabinets. Head, Speaker and Combos.

Just trying to get a fix on what I might want to do with making her pretty.

I came across this link.  I have never heard of this company but these are pieces of art both in design and in aesthetics. Not crazy about all of them but some are beautiful in my opinion.

So . . . .  I thought I would share.

Has me thinking of replacing the front with a wood engraved one fer me knobbies and switchies!!
Just dreaming out loud here.
