Hey All
My first post, I joined because I am about to order an Overtone and to do this I have sell My Mesa 5:50 and I am thinking am I crazy or is this a wise move. I don't have enough dinero to keep both amps. One of the things that concerns me is the effects loop, I run my modulation effects in that loop. I just wanted some thoughts, Nik has been terrific, I tend to get all into detail and he has been real patient, anyhow I just wondered what you guys have to say and thanks for letting me post here.

Maybe something about the effect loop.
...as you probably know effect loop on the Overtone is passive. So if you want to utilize it without quality lose you would need something like a dumbleator.

I found this explanation about effect loop on a ampgarage forum I believe. Very good explanation...  Wink
Passive loops often have a high output impedance so just about anything you connect to the loop will load the circuit down. To make things worse, in the case of an amp like an ODS, the signal level at the passive loop wil be high and will not work with low level devices. Last, and the deal breaker most of the time, since you will have to pad down the signal sent to the effects, unless the device is very sophisticated, the loop will not have the capability to restore the gain level. So, while you may be able to make the passive loop work, you will end up with much less voume than the amp would otherwise be capable of.

One of the solutions can be found here...
http://www.ironsounds.com/

It's a solid state effects loop kit.

I don't have it so I don't know how good it is but I think it would fix that passive issue just fine.

Thanks guys, I was feeling like the lone ranger and thanks for the info. We'll see what happens when I get it
I really only want to run, at this time a moogerfogger phaser and a sweet sound univibe. If the amp is as killer as I hope I will deal with it gladly.
Thank you for the tips and the welcome.

Hi WBfree,

I tested the overtone with a Rocktron Replifex, it has a 4dB button which works real well on the overtone. The rocktron intellifex also has this option.

It's late where I live in Bend, Oregon, either you guys are night owls 707 or across the wide pacific somewhere. I am not familiar with the Rocktron and don't know what it is but will check it out tomorrow, I am sleepy and have to get my son to school in the am. I thank you all. Are you all digging the tone coming out of this amp? I am selling an amp I like to get this one (Mesa Boogie 5:50) which has some beautiful clean but not that overdriven sound I have been searching for.
Thx

Aloha,

This is my first post as well.  I've been lurking here for a couple weeks beause of my interest in the Overtone Special.  I too have been captivated by marin's and spm's video clips on YouTube.  Great playing an great tone, guys!  Right now I've earmarked GAS funds for a Gibby ES-137 Custom or an ES-339.  Plus there's that little thing called private school tuition for my daughter.   Wink  So, I'm not sure when I'l be able to order one of these monster tone machines but let's just say it's on my short list.   Grin  Hey, I notice there's a forum regular from the Big Island, poipounder57.  Right on brah!

Welcome!   I'm loving mine....but I'm still trying to dial in the overdrive tone a little more...I think we're about 90-95% there...But I'm pretty picky!

I will say that the amp likes humbuckers a little more for the overdrive tones, but the cleans are gorgeous with just about any guitar.  I have not used the effects loop yet, but will eventually need to put a delay in there, and possibly some reverb...I'll cross that bridge when I get there...right now, the tones are so nice, I haven't missed effects!!!!

Let us know when you guys get your amps!

If anyone here needs help getting a new Gibby...I'm a dealer and will give you an unbelievable deal!!!  (I'm just not allowed to talk about that...)

Hope you get it dialed in. I will be interested a sample and what you did to get a satisfactory to your ears tone. Have been working on my Mesa 5:50 for awhile and still haven't quite got it, Not a experienced player but still a tone junkie, it is very important to me...and everyone else  Chair Dance
