Title: Overtone cleans Post by: stevorc321 on January 29, 2008, 10:57:35 PM Hey guys
I am really close to pulling the trigger on an OTS. I have seen all the clips which show the OD channel - amazing - but how are the cleans and pushed cleans? Does it do the fat, sparkly SRV/John Meyer/BF strat type sound well? At moderate volumes or does it ned to be cranked? Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: stevorc321 on January 30, 2008, 11:16:18 PM Anyone have any comments about the Overtone clean channel??
Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: ChrisL on January 31, 2008, 06:06:12 AM In a word (or two)...it depends. The EQ range in conjuction with the switching options makes the amp quite capable to getting close...
But it's not the same....... I think I have it close until I plug into my Super for the real deal scoop. In many ways I prefer the Overtones cleans. I find them less fatiguing and sit in a mix better without being so loud. A certain commitment needs to be made when deciding on a speaker if you want Fender cleans but an EV or JBL might be a good choice for compromise. Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: mcinku on January 31, 2008, 08:30:20 AM I would love to hear some clean tone from Overtone.
When I'll get mine I'll try to record something but I'm afraid it's going to take a while. :'( ;) Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: marinblues on January 31, 2008, 04:32:55 PM Here's a quick clean sample:
http://www.marinblues.it/music/clean_overtone.mp3 This is clean "clean". If you use the OD channel with low gain, you can get the John Mayer tones you have mentioned before....with a strat, of course. Marin Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: Kitarist on January 31, 2008, 11:13:10 PM hehe thanks for the clean clip
Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: stevorc321 on February 01, 2008, 12:52:01 AM Thanks guys - great stuff!
I am still tossing up between the OTS and the new brown Vibroverb clone. Marin I found that low gain clip on you put on youtube - awesome tone, definately in the ballpark of what I am chasing!! Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: JeffreyB on February 01, 2008, 12:55:43 AM Hey and thanks for posting the clean clip...but I need to ask: How are the tone controls set? It seems to have no bottom end at all? Are the clips pretty true to how it sounds? Your distorted tones on your video clip are great, but the clean clip worries me a little.
Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: marinblues on February 01, 2008, 06:36:25 AM I used 3 different settings to show that there are many possibilities. There is plenty of bottom, you just have to set it that way.

Marin, Got any more clean tones to listen to, just curious, like to hear all the possibilities, like a tad fatter, and more bottom ;D Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: jzucker on March 05, 2008, 04:26:37 PM By the way, folks keep asking these questions about will it do this or will it do that.
All dumble amps are different but the difference between one guy's amp and another guy's amp is usually a matter of $10 in component tweaks. When folks buy high dollar d-clones, they often have to have some tweaks made based on speaker cabs, playing styles, etc. So, just cuz you hear Marin's amp doing or not doing something doesn't mean too much. Almost any of the d tones based on the ODS amps are possible with a tweak or two...Or maybe it's perfect right out of the box. There's no voodoo here. Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: stevorc321 on March 09, 2008, 04:53:04 AM Does this qualify as "clean"?? ??? Sure does Marin - beautiful tone! It's great to see this side of the overtone - clean, fenderish but with a lot of sustain. Was this the clean channel with the level up a bit or the overdrive channel with the OD down low? Also, was this through the Jensen or the Celestion? Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: mcinku on March 09, 2008, 03:20:38 PM Beautiful tone !!

Also, was this through the Jensen or the Celestion? This was with the OD channel (no PAB, DEEP, BRIGHT or ROCK) with volume around 6, OD around 2 and Ratio around 2. Master was at 1 and Presence at 3. I used the Celestion which I much prefer. thanks to all for the nice comments. M. Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: Relicula on March 20, 2008, 01:10:57 AM Marin, thanks for all the great clips, you and spm are selling a lot of amps for Nik.
What kind of delay did you use on the last clip with the strat? Was that the g12-65 spkr? Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: marinblues on March 26, 2008, 09:38:05 AM Marin, thanks for all the great clips, you and spm are selling a lot of amps for Nik. What kind of delay did you use on the last clip with the strat? Was that the g12-65 spkr? thanks. I typically use a DD-3 in the loop and then add reverb in the mix. I have just bought a reverb pedal so I now have my "what-you-hear-is-what-you-get" setup. I might change the DD-3 because it has a bit too much of that digital high-end sizzle (not a bad pedal overall, though). Any suggestion? the speaker was the G1265. whoa- great tones Marin- clean but with that juicy compression- nice! Hell- that's making the wait for my Overtone all the worse! Should be with me soon I hope- been 7 weeks now since order- Nik? Nik? :P :P :P AArrggh! Nurse! Nurse! the curtains!!! Seriously- I recommend the new EH memory Man with Hazarai- it does lots of weird/fun stuff too but has a really nice spring/amp reverb sims & you can roll off the highs of the repeats & using it last night was able to get that nice Robben Ford slapback/reverb tone easily- will use mine in the effex loop of the Overtone....one day.... Cheers, Mitch Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: marinblues on March 29, 2008, 10:26:24 AM Marin- whoa- great tones Marin- clean but with that juicy compression- nice! Cheers, Mitch Thats interesting. I was checking out the demo's on Youtube the other day and they were all either trying to mimic THe Edge from U2 or a 1982 Space Invaders video game. :D So it can do a decent delay and reverb combined? Is it fairly transparent in the tone? thanks Marin Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: Mitch on March 29, 2008, 11:59:14 AM Marin-
you can do the weird stuff if needed- but as far as I can tell the EH MM stereo w/hazarai has true bypass- (if you pull the plug on the DC supply the guitar signal remains un-affected - a good sign) but you can easily program it for some very warm natural delays with a hint of reverb which is my scene really- I have to say it replaced my Line 6 DL4 which I found to be a REAL tone sucker unfortunately....IMHO it sounded great with my band last night, I play in a blues based power trio format, and it really helped to create space & warmth in a small venue. I used it in-line with my old 1969 Marshall plexi Superlead into a 1972 Marshall 2x12 with G12-65 & V30 speakers. I have to say to change presets needs a lot of bending over- so I'm looking forward to just putting it on top of the Overtone using the send/returns etc... certainly it sounds a lot better than the boss DD5's etc... which can be a bit 'gritty/strident' sounding. Cheers, Mitch Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: marinblues on March 30, 2008, 10:04:55 AM Thanks Mitch.
If you are in a position to post some clips, that would be cool. cheers. Marin Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: Mitch on March 31, 2008, 04:58:40 PM Marin-
well you made me sign up to youtube- so here's a clip with the Memory Man proving subtle reverb & slapback- Zendrive 2 providing the Overtone tones (sort of) - I didn't feel particularly inspired - but what the heck- now I've got my account in place will post clips when my Overtone arrives any...time...now.... please? :D (hopefully the embed works- I'm a bit new to all of this!) Cheers buddy, Mitch. Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: marinblues on April 01, 2008, 12:48:32 PM Nice tones and playing Mitch.
That Zen-thing is really something! :) I think that you will like your Overtone. The pedal sounds good i.e. I can't tell that you are using one (i.e its transparent)! Can you do another clip with say a 350-400ms delay? Thanks! Marin Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: JD0x0 on May 27, 2008, 10:05:17 PM Hey Marin
i have a tech 21 boost D.L.A. and its amazing, its all analog and you can dial in a tube tape echo sound perfectly, it even can get a "warble" effect that tape echoes get from worn out components. or you can get a nice warm slap back. It has a tone knob to dial in the warmness or brightness of the delay and it also has a built in boost which is quite nice. Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: Steven_nl on May 28, 2008, 06:48:37 AM Great clips. I agree with Marin. That Zendrive is porbably the best pedal I have ever heard. Why oh why did I buy an Overtone. This is much cheaper. ;)
Title: Re: Overtone cleans Post by: Dumbleseeker on May 28, 2008, 06:03:55 PM Try an Ethos Pedal. I happen to think it is better than a Zendrive-More tube like IMHO. 8)
