Title: OTS with EL34's???
Post by: Mitch on July 16, 2008, 05:15:09 PM
Guys,

recently noticed in my OTS the regulation Tung Sol 6L6's were showing a lot of 'blue-light' which apparently is a sure sign of 'gassy' tubes - so noting that a lot of later D*mbles seem to have EL34's installed, I put in a matched set of Groove Tubes E34LS which are a 6CA7 type- a more robust version of stock EL34's.

After careful biasing, assuming the OT has around 450v on the plates at around 36-8ma, I have to say I much prefer the tones I'm getting now- slightly more 'scooped' clean tones & a tad more 'crunchier' overdrive & lot's more harmonics in note decay.  I have to say I'm very much in the Marshall camp in my tone preferences, so this may have a lot to do with it & my English ears of course!  ;)  or did I just have a duff set of Tung Sols?

Anyone else try EL34's?

I fully intend to. I would say tho' that the blue light is common on Fenders when you've got them working hard first time it happened to me it frightened me a lot until my tech told me it was normal. You really only notice it when you can see in the back and the lighting is poor.

I've not got my 6L6 tone sorted yet, its not really 'chimey' so I intend getting that dialled first then I will be trying them. Might have to take it to a tech, most of the mods posted here assume a knowledge level way above mine.

I am using JJ EL34L's and like them, I am still working on dialing mine in but I prefer them. The tone I am working towards in my head on the OD side would be a bit nastier then RF tone and my lack of expertise in electronics's and my crummy guitar :(  ;D playing add a bit of time to the learning curve but I have always preferred the 34's.
I love this amp. 8)

Hywelg, I shouldn't admit this but I was all turned around by the OD, PAB switch as you were.. :-[
