Title: OTS passive effects loop with reverb pedal/Kleinulator
Post by: docmh on December 28, 2008, 09:33:59 AM
I want to use a Holy Grail reverb pedal with my OTS. Will it work in the passive effects loop or is it best to run it in front of the amp? Do you need a Kleinulator in all cases to run the effects loop? what does a pedal in the loop without  the K unit do to the amp or sound?
Thanks

It's a bit hit and miss with FX the loop. Have not used the specific unit but in general.
You could either over load the pedal or not get enough volume on the return eg. your master will not get louder after about 3-4.

Running into the front end you will get distorted reverb...not a good sound in general, if you use the OD section.

The Klein acts a a buffer so the amp and the FX see the correct gain and impedance.

If you have been running this way with out a buffer, it could be the cause of your low volume problem.

I have no experience with the Kleinulator, but I have been rocking my RedPlateAmps D'Lator for a bit.  I'd call Henry at RedPlateAmps and ask him about building you his dumblelator.  It is 12AX7 based and sounds great.  You can also swap tubes for more tonal choices.

I use a Holy Grail with the Klein unit in the loop.  The sound is hard to beat...well worth the additional investment.
