Title: OTS mini 20 compatibility w/ two rock 2x12 cab
Post by: hoihose on October 06, 2014, 02:17:40 AM
Hi.

I'm quite new here and this is my first post and I reaally some helpful tips and opinions.

I would like to seek some advice regarding Amp wattage and Cab speaker wattage compatibility for my planned set up.

For whatsoever reason I finally was able to get a 2x12 two-rock Cab loaded w/ 1 celestion G1265 & 1 two-rock emminence (g1265 copy).
Both 8 ohms speakers and wired in series thus 16 ohm speaker cab load.

I plan to acquire an OTS mini 20 real real soon.
My question is that........
Would my current Cab/Speaker setup be compatible w/ the OTS mini 20?
I mean is it the ideal set up for my setup to be able to maximize it's full potential tone wise & reliability wise?

Or do I need to get 2 lower wattage speakers? Like 2 x 20 watt speakers / 2 x 30 watt speakers?

Sadly due to costs and practical reasons getting a 50 watt HRM/OTS instead is out of the question.

Hope to hear from you guys soon on what i should and can do.

Thank You in advance!!! ;D

That combination of speakers will be fine with a 20w Output section. You don't have to worry about over compensating with speakers with a low powered amp. You would however have an issue if it were a high powered amp 100w or more. You'll get more clean headroom with that speaker configuration. I also highly suggest re-wiring the cab in Parallel (assuming both speakers are 8ohm's) and using it as a 4ohm cab instead. The 4ohm Output Impedance tap will have a tinge more high frequency content because of it's relationship with the global negative feedback in the presence circuit. That in combination with flipping the phase on the speaker cable are some easy DIY mods that will only help with great articulating in individual notes, feedback, as well as sustain.

That's an awful lot of speaker for a 20 watt amp.  One of those speakers is still kind of a lot for that amp.  They'll work.  They're just big.

thanks for the feedback.

don't I need to switch into lower wattage speakers?

I use an OTS Mini 20 and I use for some gigs 2 single 12" speaker cabs, each loaded with a Scumback M75, LHDC, 8 Ohm, 100 Watt Speaker.

The OTS drives one of them great, but with two of them I get a better low end throw and sustain. My bandmates say I should use 2 12" on every gig.

With 2 speakers, I can rip your head off with this "little" 20 watt amp. It's pretty impressive.

Just my opinion.
