Title: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: DrJim on February 17, 2013, 08:28:04 PM So I started populating my chassis today while the wife and kid were napping. :)
I am extremely excited to begin this build! Will post pics as the build progresses. Thoughts about heater wires flat on back on chassis versus raised braid above the tubes? ??? Seen both on this forum, one better than other? I believe HAD always braided above tube sockets. Thanks for all the great info on the forum.. I have and will continue to learn from everyone! James PS.. As posting this my wife yells the washer was on fire! Really check out the pic! :o Done with the amp for the day and off to buy a new washer... Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: sduck on February 18, 2013, 04:11:50 AM Very nice! Good call on getting the bottom hardware in before adding the side stuff - I ended up having to take a bunch of the side stuff out to get the bottom stuff in.
I had a thread with a pictorial history of my 50w BM build here some 2 years ago, but the pictures are gone currently - I could put hem back if you're interested. Heater wires - They can work either way. I did mine down low against the chassis, with a bunch of silicone glue holding them in place, but if I had to do it again I'd float them in the middle. The important thing is to keep all signal carrying wires as far as possible from them. In other words, if you put the heater wires low, you're going to have to float the signal wires up in the air. While this is fine, and sounds great and works well, it doesn't work for everybody. Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: hywelg on February 18, 2013, 12:06:32 PM Go with what HAD did. Especially the lead dress around v1 and v2, very important aparently.

J Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: DrJim on March 04, 2013, 04:36:10 AM Worked a little more this week. Heater wires done and sockets partially wired. I am gonna have to wait for a few days because I had a parts problem (Nik took care of it immediately!!).
Will continue the build once I get the stuff this week. Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: captainbackfire on March 05, 2013, 06:52:32 AM I wish i did my heaters above as high as yours . Mine is like hanging midway between the bottom and the cab ceiling but I realize yours would be farther from the signal leads which is goog I suppose.
V Nice work so far sir. I love build threads. Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: DrJim on March 06, 2013, 02:41:19 AM V,
We will find out when its done.. I just copied the HAD height as shown on many of the Dumbles. I went ahead and mounted the OT and Choke tonight. Parts shipped today hopefully here by the weekend. Thanks to everyone for the awesome info found in this forum.. J Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: DrJim on March 20, 2013, 04:02:04 AM More progress.. Wired all front/rear pots and switches...
Mounted OT and choke.. Hoping to mount PT and 2 boards this weekend or next!!! Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: DrJim on March 27, 2013, 02:13:44 AM Finished my build tonight!! :D
I need to figure which tubes I want to use? ??? I have some matched NOS Sylvania or some Tung Sol 6l6GCs.. My options for the 12ax7.. You name it, I probably have it.. Maybe I will just roll through them until I am happy with sound... Thanks to several members who build threads were extremely helpful: Sduck sonicmojo mcinku and Nik @ Ceriatone - Class Act... Best Customer Service!! ;) Will post pics soon... Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: DrJim on March 28, 2013, 03:36:53 AM Put in tubes tonight! NOS 12AX7 GE, RCA and a 12AX&LPS
My NOS 6L6GCs have a small glass shard in each tube? Broken base? I am sending them back to the seller for refund. Using Ruby 6L6GCs Biased at 35mA-38mA. It works!! No hum or noise at all!! :chairdance: How much difference will switching out 6L6s make? I need to do some tube rolling on the preamp and maybe adjust the trimpots a little more.. Pics coming!! Keep forgetting to take my phone to my shop upstairs.. Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: sduck on March 29, 2013, 10:12:22 PM Congratulations! Yes, pics, audio or video would be great, but just knowing it works can be enough!

I have not put the chassis in the Head Cabinet yet.. Probably should wait until I have all adjustments inside finished. Title: Re: OTS BM 50 Build Begins! Post by: captainbackfire on May 02, 2013, 11:44:46 AM Wow that looks really neat and almost like delicious to eat.
