For those of you with an OTS head: What cabinet and speakers are you using and why?

Is this the cabinet you just happen to have or since you went out of your way to make/buy an OTS are you also seeking the best sounding cabinet/speakers too?

This is a long shot question - have any of you tried Port City amp cabinets?

Sorry if something on this line has been posted, I've searched some but I've not found anything.

I debated a 1x12" combo cab from Gabkits, but lucked into a Fuchs closed-back, ported 1x12", so I use that.  I did buy a Gabkits OTS head cab, though, great quality, & its a looker to boot!  I've used an EVM12L in there, but I just recently went back to using a Speaker Warehouse E65 (clone of Celestion G1265).  It sounds...chewy.

I am using mine with 3 differnet cabinets.  My primary recording cabinet is a late 60's Marshall 4x12 with original greenbacks.  I know most players don't like this cabinet with the Overtone, but I am getting a really good sound.  It's also a very convenient for me since I leave that cabinet mic'd up in my studio and just swap heads when I want a different sound.

I also use it with a Peavey 4x10 open back cabinet.  This may be my favorite sound for this amp but I haven't been able to capture the sound for recording yet. While this is a great sounding cabinet, it doesn't seem to record well...or maybe I just haven't found the right mic and placement combination yet.

My main stage cabinet is a Genz-Benz G-Flex 2x12.  I have retrofitted mine with  Celestion Vintage 30's.  The stock speakers for the Genz have a very harsh high and mid response.  Changing to the Vintage 30's drastically improved the sound of the cabinet.  Generally every amp that I have played through this cabinet sounds excellent, and this is certainly true for the Overtone Special.   For low end response and projection you can't beat this cabinet.

I think I am the only guy in the forum using the BIG 10s.  I posted my rig in the completed amp section and I use a Weber STV and a tone tubby alnico.  The punch is phenomenal.  I also have 1x12 celestion in a closed back cab but have not found much need to use it.   I like compactability for gigging and the combo is preferable to me.  Good luck

I have been intrigued by the port city cab for a while now. If you decide to spend the big bucks for this cab please let us know what you think.

I run my OTS though an Avatar 2 x12 cab with a Vintage 30 and G12H30. The G12H30 gives a fuller bottom end and smooths out the tone. The Vintage 30 gives the bite. This cab makes just about any amp sound good. I have also AB'd the OTS with the Avatar cab vs. 2 x12 G12-65. And the 65's sounded dead compared to the V30/G12H30 combination.

I recently payed a Speedster 25 Deluxe amp through just the G12H30 and it sounded glorious. I also played the speedster through a  1 x12 loaded with an Eminence Wizard and it sound like a bell ringing. And,  I have also played a  Carr Vincent (now Viceroy) with a Wizard in it and that amp sounded like a ringing bell. I just ordered an Avatar 1 x12 cab and an Eminence Wizard based on that experience. I am interested to see what the OTS does with that set up.

Thanks for the input. I guess I really need to look closer at the thread on finished amps.

Right now, I'm on a tone quest and my thinking (be it right or wrong) tells me that if I'm going to spend the money on an OTS then I don't need the cab & speakers to be the weak link in the chain.

I'll wait until I have the amp or build the amp before getting the cab unless I get a great deal. So it may still be a while. I'm in the investigating and learning stage right now prior to building my first amp which may be the OTS 5watter they are expecting to put out soon.

Thanks again.

I prefer my ported CCC cabs with built in microphones and new Jay Mitchell doughnut  beam blockers. Sounds absolutely fantastic in small clubs, on big stage or in the studio.
But they are more expensive then Port City, TDH or Buzz feiten cabs.

I agree 100%.  Cab and speakers will make or break you.

Pickmaster- intrigued as to where you obtained your beam blockers?  Just bought an Expression Trainwreck clone & whilst I really love it's touch & tone, it has a pretty fierce top end if your not careful...  of course I'm in total agreement with the CCC cabs- nothing beats them in my humble opinion- mine have Celestion Golds with the OTS & Vintage Neodymium's with the 'Wreck... although I may swap 'em out for some old G12-65's in an effort to tame the top end...

Hi Mitch,

I made them from 1,5 cm AUDIO foam which I’ve bought on Ebay.
Dimensions: 10’’ diameter with 2’’ round hall in the centre.
Glued on the grill cloth exactly in front of the speakers.
Because our cabs have space between baffle and grill you can hear unaffected sound from the cab near you, when listeners in front of the cab hear filtered, non irritant tone plus sound from the PA via built in mic.
Soon we will  incorporate this beam blockers in our cabs as option on demand.

I tried googling "CCC cabinets" with no luck.  What are CCC's? Is there a website?
