Title: No mid control - Can someone check for me ?
Post by: JEDMON01 on April 06, 2009, 06:26:49 PM
I removed PAB, FET & Rock switch some months back as I have no use for them.
( installed a clean o/d in the amp in their place ).
My question is , whilst fiddling last night I noticed my mid control has no effect when the treble & bass are off !!!

Could someone do this simple test and report back.

Turn ALL EQ to zero ( and switches off ).
Turn treble 0 > 10    highs come tho'    YES  ;D
Return to 0,0,0

Turn Bass 0 > 10      bottom end comes thro'   YES  ;D
Return to 0,0,0

Turn Middle 0 > 10     No effect !!!!!        ???

I am sure this is OK as the controls interact enormously but it would be nice to know I have rebuild the EQ correctly after my canabalisation  ;D

Hi John, this might be of little or no use to you as I changed my mid cap a while back to try and scoop some mids out of the tone to make it more Fenderish, anyway doing your test I do get a little variation in the mids. You know how Matt showed us how he dialed in an amp by turning the knobs quickly over the full range? well doing that I can hear a small change in the mids, not much and the cusp seems to be at around 6 or 7.

Be interested to know what you've done to get a clean boost, is it the mod that Dr Ika posted, the one that gives a control over the PAB function?

Cheers

Hi Hywel,

Glad you replied.....

So when you had ALL controls off, and turned the middle control up, it did make an audible difference ?  My mid only works if the Bass is up.

I installed a Red Snapper on the FET board. Used the three switch holes for the controls , Vol, bite and Gain.  Installed push-pull treble & middle pots for "bright" & "deep", not that I use them.    Wired the snapper to the PAB relay so I can operate it from the footswitch.

I installed all of Dr Ika's mods but I have slowly gone back to stock as it was a bit too big & dark for me, great for the Dr. I do have 470pf scrubbers as per Two Rock Custom reverb. And a 0.01 in place of 0.005 at the exit of the o/d.  Also 100k instead of 180k feeding the o/d level. That's about it.

Love it.  Sold both my Two rocks.

Kind Regards
John

Yes it did, but I have to say, not much.

Wow that was very inspired!

Nice one!

Did you just rip a Red Snapper from its box or did you build it yourself from scratch ?

Hi,
I build one from scratch as they are very simple. There is a picture of the final amp on MySpace ....

I brought my OTS to a local (and very good) tech and he showed me on the scope that the MID only works if the bass (and treble?) are set in a certain  range. In some settings the mid had no effect at all. Had soemthing to do with the design.

Many thanks.  That's the news I wanted to hear.
