Post by: Steven_nl on May 30, 2008, 10:23:53 AM
Just took a look at Niks website. There's a new Overtone 100 now

Four 6L6's....looks tasty!!

Any idea how that will sound compared to the 50 - presumably the cleans will have more headroom.

I wonder if it's got the same mods done to it as the 50W model - at leas tthe ones that apply...

Decisions, decisions - it would mean another month of saving - but would it be worth it?

Yeah look tasty.

I'm waiting for my Overtone, should arrive in 1 or 2 weeks (maybe one weeks more as nik says (delayed :'()

I hope 50W will be enought for me (blues/rock/pop band with bass, drums, organ an a singer).

Don't think you'll have any problems there, they have plenty of headroom I reckon.

same crucial question for me. as am just about to order an Overtone.
50 or 100 watts ?
Maybe the best of both worlds, a 100 watts, with a half power switch ?
What you all think ??

Thanks

I'm wondering if the 50W version can be mod to the 100W version with few mods ? (hmm maybe the OT can't be used with 4 6L6).

Thats a good question. I just realized that he now makes a 100 version and I just received the shipping notice for a 50. What do you think the chances are that Nik would provide a BOM for parts needed to modify the 50 for 100?

In terms of 50 to 100w conversion, anything is possible, but it would likely involve a new output transformer and possibly a new power transformer, but the other changes would be small.

I play in a band with the same format. We rehearse in an insulated 24 x 36 metal building. I can't get the 50W OTS above 1.5  Volume and Master, with (Bright, Deep & Rock, Overdrive on, Pre-amp boost off) without blowing everybody out the door. At a fairly large club with a raised stage and about a 200 person capacity I was able to crank it up to 3 (after the place was full). I have taken to leaving all the switches off(Overdrive on), Cranking the Volume to 5 with the master at 2 (overdrive on), and use the pre-amp boost switch or Full Drive 2 as needed.

It is inconceivable to me as to why any one needs a 100W amp (except for their own enjoyment????). An 18W amp miked to the PA is good enough for just about anything.   I used to play a cranked Twin Reverb, now I can't figured out how that volume level was tolerated back then.

100W are here for clean head room, not to be crancked up !

100w  !!!  ???   What did you say????

50W is so loud, it would be OK for anything i think.  I think a 30W version would be nice .

100 watts is only about 3dB louder, and you could make a standard overtone 22 watts if you swap out the tubes for 6V6's you just need to change the impedance selector on the amp because theres an impedance mismatch.

Wouldn't you expect the tone of the OTS to change, if 6V6's were used? They change the tone of my THD Bivalve significantly.

I´m surprised you say that. I find my OTS less loud than my 18w (haven´t tried the OTS at full volume yet). Actually I´m playing it at 3 volume and 3 Master volume. And it´s still not that loud (playing at apartment volume). I´m beginning to think there´s something wrong with my amp...

I don't think mine is very loud either, especially with deep off and jazz, its positively quiet. Makes a change from all the Fender amps I've had hat were way too loud, especially my HotRod DL.
